I live in southern BC and I have to say that it really isn't much colder here. Some people take the Canadian stereotypes too far. There's stories about people crossing the border from Washington into BC in the summer wearing winter jackets, as if they were expecting a wall of snow when you cross an imaginary line. In my (most definitely biased) opinion, it's the best place in the world to live.
Rather than authenticating 'good' users and 'bad' users with a review system like ebay, wouldn't it just make more sense to have a hash of each file shared, and then only download those files with a high number of users sharing it.
Then all the spam files would have 1 or 2 copies each and the real files would have like 50+ copies.
maybe when longhorn is released, microsoft will release a computer with astounding hardware and loads of DRM to run it
then everyone will need to buy it to use longhorn
mIRC did something similar in idea a few releases back
mIRC 6.11 was the first version to require a serial code to run after 30 days
not alot of people updated to it, then not long after the release an exploit was discovered
mIRC 6.12 was released to fix the hole in all versions prior to it, and people were forced to upgrade to be secure
I bought a Ti-89, thinking it was the holy grail of calculators, and now there are some lower level exams that do not allow it because it can solve algebraic equations. It sure plays nibbles well though.
I use DCC to send files to users who are too inept to set up their firewall because in a DCC transfer, the reciever makes a connection to the sender. I wonder if this practice will be continued in DCC2?
This robot will bring you beer
the one from a few weeks ago will drive you home when you are drunk
all we need now is a robot that will let you pee into it all night and clean up after you and your friends the next morning
They seem to have taken more than a cue. They've basically taken google's site and changed the banner. The only difference I can see is the MP3 tab, which google lacks.
The UK doesn't allow headbutts. Everyone is different, and if this happened everyone would be forced to accept USA standards. Also what if your site has some content on it somewhere, does the entire site have to be flagged 'bad' and potentially blocked from all schools, librarys, etc
I've often wished for the days of dialup
internet was a nicer place
but as technology makes faster connections possible, people make faster connections necessary by thinking "everyone has dsl, its no problem to download a 500mb file"
also I bet the infection rate of worms would drop drastically if everyone wasn't 'Always-On,' connected 24/7
It's a well meaning idea, but it would cause more problems than it would solve. It would just encourage sloppy code; people would rationalize "I don't need to fix errors because it doesn't matter", which is a very bad habit to get into when programming, ignoring errors, or even warnings
I hardly think email is the next 'killer app.' I get about 100 spams a day, and about 1 legitimate message every few weeks. Nowadays, virtually all of my communication is done over IM.

god damnit why dont the mods check the timestamps on posts before modding mine redundant
I like how this was posted in the apple section. The editors must be so busy they don't even have time to read more than the title.
Not after version 6.11. That is the whole point. Now you are forced to enter a serial number.
The average home user could still be using Windows 95 with the computer they bought 5 years ago. Average home user != Current cutting edge

I agree, slashdot would be a so much worse without the Anonymous Coward first post sex story trolls :P

Seriously, should this article be modded Troll, Flamebait or Funny?
what a great idea
so long tourism - err - terrorism
Operating system is not software.
They see Windows XP, Linux, and then 10 racks of windows software
I think I see the problem
are canadian visitors included in this law? or are canadian tourists governed by a completely different set of rules?

Options are generally only included in polls you insensitive clod
It's not an invasion of privacy because you willingly install it. I would've thought that was obvious.

Because he's dead.
Just install a linux distro and no XFree, because everyone knows the best newbie interface is a CLI
