Microsoft is not a juggernaut that rolls over everything that it touches. They have failed *many* times in becoming even a viable competitor in certain marketplaces, let alone a dominant force that squashes everyone. Examples of where they have not wiped out an established competitor include home finances software (vs Quicken), PDA platforms (vs Palm), game consoles (vs Sony), search engines (vs Google), web portals (vs Yahoo), DRM'ed music files (vs Apple), etc, etc, etc.
To pick a nit, Palm once had the PDA market all to itself. Palm-based PDAs' market share now trails MS-based PDAs by a wide margin.
Are you saying MS is not a viable competitor in game consoles, search engines & web portals? I'll give you Quicken, but MS has been very non-commital to MS Money since the blocked Intuit acquisition.
MS does not have a comparable business to Apple in the DRM space as they do not mfg their own player.
Everybody fears MS to some degree or another. They are a formidable competitor in any space they enter. WIll they win? As you say above, maybe not, but they sure as heck will be disruptive.
is self-discipline. You can buy all the organizers, PDAs and other assorted tools, but unless you make a commitment to learning how tomanage your time and then actually doing it, you will fail.
The commitment required is not insubstantial. You will have to overcome years of bad habits.
It's not insurmountable, but don't think that by reading this (or any of the other books... I prefer 7 Habits myself) that you have learned time management. Reading the book is only the first step in a long journey.
It is worth it though. And I recommend it to anybody, especially to people who think their lives are so interrupt-driven that they couldn't possibly benefit from time menagement. Guess what? You're the folks who will benefit the most.
They backed the wrong horse (Itanium) and don't appear to have a Plan B. We have some nice parting gifts and the home version of The Silicon Valley Company Game.
SGI's heyday was when most people thought of them as The Purple Computer Company; the Jurassic Park Era. And yes, their lack of a brand identity and strategy was part of their undoing.

It might be "up to the developers" to make a GPL3 operating system that is forked from the current Linux kernel, but it won't be called Linux as Linus owns that trademark and Linus says no to GPL3. Perhaps this is what Stallman is ultimately after. He can finally have a GNU operating system without hyphens or slashes.
Let me understand this, when it's a good idea or a great idea, it should be patentable, but then it's a fan-fucking-tastic idea, it shouldn't? If this is the real deal, how much money will be spent to bring it from test tube results through human trials & regulatory approvals? Are the people doing this just supposed to do it for the "greater good"? Last I looked you can't buy food or pay a mortgage that way.
If you solve a really big problem, you should be entitled to a really big reward.
Although so far limited to early test tube studies, CSA-54, one of a family of compounds called Ceragenins (or CSAs), mimics the disease-fighting characteristics of anti-microbial and anti-viral agents produced naturally by a healthy human immune system.
While the tests are repeatable, there's a long distance between the test tube and human trials.
It's not like Google, Yahoo, et al are sending this data unsolicited. The are replying to requests made by paying customers of Verizon. And they're saying they need this to complete their FTTH buildout in a profitable way?
Hey Verizon! Didn't you do an analysis to see if FTTH would be profitable before you began such an ambitious program? If you can't do it profitably, then don't do it. Don't be disingenuous by saying that now you need Internet Portals to pony up for some share of the buildout.
And hey, Vince Cerf! You of all people shouldn't be doing the "imminent death of the Net predicted (film at 11)" bit. If Verizon or others start providing "tiered access" to the Internet Portals, paying customers will complain. Let market forces decide the outcome.
If I write something, I get to pick the license. If Stallman doesn't like it, I'll sleep just fine at night and will have no problems looking at myself in the mirror.
The nasties really happen below 3mm (anaeorobic bacteria). Even your denatal hygenist can't do much below 3mm (though you can have your gums reduced). How does the gel get down there if your dentist can't?

I'm the son of a blue-collar worker and a stay-at-home mom (who raised 4 more kids along side me). About 25% of the families in the neighborhood of my youth were on welfare.
I've caught a few breaks along the way, but I am where I am today as the result of perserverance and hard work. So don't give me this shit about privelege and comfort or paying not paying my fair share of taxes.
I've probably heard every excuse there is to not vote. They all boil down to either apathy or laziness.
How bad do you want that job? Willing to subsist on rice & beans and skip beer for a few days to make up for the non-paid time off for your job search? If not, maybe the status quo doesn't suck so bad after all.
Apple hasn't so much created a technology as they have a lifestyle that specifically includes iTunes and an iPod, not any old mp3 player and download service. No competitor has come close. Google will be no different in that regard. Apple comes with a cachet that Google annot approach when it comes to "coolness" with Joe Sixpack.

Same deal. Self-discipline. You'll either change or be a slacker for life. Up to you.
Tom addresses this issue in the very first chapter.

Stallman: a shrill voice in the wilderness.
I, for one, cannot remember who developed the smallpox vaccine.

then why not implment it and end the whole mess?

Froogle for music?
Meaning lots of shifty fly-by-night suppliers offering to sell me songs on the cheap and then never delivering?
