Yes, I understand that. All I'm saying is that it looks many of the prices were set assuming parity between the Euro and USD though, which was true for a while.

Don't forget to factor in VAT. It's included in virtually all European prices whereas local US sales taxes are not. Assuming 17% VAT (not too far off from most European countries) 60/1.17 is about 50 and 70/1.17 is about 60.

I can't remember where I read it, but I did read something not too long ago about how being HIV+ affects severity of malaria and how malaria affects contraction of HIV+ and progression to AIDS. Basically, once you get one, it becomes much more likely that you'll get and have more medical problems faster with the other one.

  5. Re:Don't Forget The Easy Way! on Compound From Olive-Pomace Oil Inhibits HIV Spread · · Score: 1

If you look across the entire world, you'll find that the overwhelming majority of people who are HIV+ (and especially those dying of AIDS) caught the disease through heterosexual sex. Europe and North America are exceptions to the rest of the world, although even in those places the share of infections from heterosexual sex (particularly among non-drug using black and hispanic populations) continues to climb.

  6. Re:a rather evil suggestion on Compound From Olive-Pomace Oil Inhibits HIV Spread · · Score: 2, Informative

Of course you're assuming that if the condom fails, you will get definitely HIV, which is a faulty assumption.

You really need to multiply that 1% (the chance of failure) by the chance that you'll become infected from a known positive partner (depends on the act but even receptive anal sex is about 1 in 50 or 2%) by the chance that your partner is HIV+ in the first place (varies greatly by population but even among gay men in big cities it's about 10%). So instead of 1%, you're looking more at something like 0.01 * 0.02 * 0.1 = 0.002% or about 500 times less risky than the figure you claim. And that's for a high risk population engaging in a lot of sex with different partners.

Definitely true. Flu season happens in the winter in places like Europe, the US and Canada not strictly because it's cold at that time. People are not generally more susceptible to the flu in cold conditions. The main reason is that because of the cold weather, we all tend to spend more time inside enclosed buildings in the winter where it's easier for the flu to spread. In tropical climates which don't ever get cold, flu season tends to be during the wet season.

I'm a Microsoftie with one of these cards too. I filled out the application for it at Linux World back in 1999 when I was in college, many years before I came to work at Microsoft. Even though I rarely use the card for anything, it's my oldest credit card and it's usually best for your credit to just keep accounts open. MBNA and now BofA have just made me not want to use the card. The interest rate and fees are high. They charge an additional 3% on all foreign transactions (on top of the 1% Mastercard is already taking in the exchange rate). When they send a paper statement (which I only get if there's a balance on the card for that month), the envelope is full of all sorts of other advertisements. When BofA bought MBNA, they forced all the customers into BofA's online banking system. First, it required a bunch of extra bullshit to login (site key non-sense) which just pissed me off. Second, the site is more of a pain to navigate since it's more oriented towards BofA banking customers.

The whole thing is just a mess and I find myself using other cards with better features, better fees and a better online user experience.

The only amusement I ever got from using the card was from waiters or cashiers who were enamored by "the cute penguin". (:

Grant money is the life blood of scientific research at major universities (at least in the US). The money for equipment, graduate student stipends/tuition, supporting research and facilites staff simply has to come from somewhere else since endowments and state funding (in the case of public universities) are not enough on their own. It's not uncommon today for less than a third of the total budget of a public university to come from state or local government sources. Any academic department that wants to be successful at research needs to get those grants so that they can compete for the graduate students who do the real work down in the trenches of that business.
