here's the thing. i almost never make voice calls from my phone. i would have left a headset plugged in 24 7 if it did work.

i could take the device apart and remove the speaker.

but it comes down to time wasted.

when i had a 3650 i just turned it off.
when i had n70 i just switched the profile to silent
when i had a e61i i set warning tones to off - 10 minutes finding this option.
when i got the e71 i also set warning tones off.

i shouldn't have to waste time finding the new way to turn off an unwanted feature!
i shouldn't have to worry every time i update firmware that they are going to remove a feature that i want! the firmware notice made no comment that they were turning on this noise for any reason.

my iphone can be made silent. it's an inferior phone/os compared to the nokia in almost every way. yet now it is my primary phone. of course with the google voice app debacle (i don't make voice calls remember but its the principal) i won't be buying the next version. so its off to android for me. suspect the camera there will be noisy... sigh!

Sleeping in Labuan Bajo, however, is something of an endurance test.
Being woken at dawn by the cockerels is not in itself a problem. The problem arises when the cockerels get confused as to when dawn actually is. They suddenly explode into life squawking and screaming at about one o'clock in the morning. At about one-thirty they eventually realise their mistake and shut up, just as the major dog-fights of the evening are getting under way. These usually start with a few minor bouts between the more enthusiastic youngsters, and then the full chorus of heavyweights weighs in with a fine impression of what it might be like to fall into the pit of hell with the London Symphony Orchestra.
It is then quite an education to learn that two cats fighting can make easily as much noise as forty dogs. It is a pity to have to learn this at two-fifteen in the morning, but then the cats have a lot to complain about in Labuan Bajo. They all have their tails docked at birth, which is supposed to bring good luck, though presumably not to the cats.
Once the cats have concluded their reflections on this, the cockerels suddenly get the idea that it's dawn again and let rip. It isn't, of course. Dawn is still two hours away, and you still have the delivery van horn-blowing competition to get through to the accompaniment of the major divorce proceedings that have suddenly erupted in the room next door.
At last things calm down and your eyelids begin to slide thankfully together in the blessed predawn hush, and then, about five minutes later, the cockerels finally get it right.

Second, he said it of Spanish officers, not the British Navy.

strange i'd always heard it used as a description of the irish soldiers under his command. i've seen it in print form as well as on the web.

For real Navy incompetence, you need to look no further than John Jervis, Lord St. Vincent. His idea of blockade was so close that its main danger was to his own ships, which were often wrecked close inshore. Appointed to shore command, he couldn't see the need for all those people working in shipyards. So he sacked 20% of them and cut the pay of the rest. Hence Nelson's depleted fleet at Trafalgar. Making stupid decisions to cut costs has a long history in the Navy, beginning with the aftermath of the Armada.

i currently have a nokia e71 and use the 3mp camera for this purpose. the e61i and n70 i had before that with a 2mp camera did this as well. the 1mp camera in the palm zire 72 also achieved this aim. it just took a bit more care with lower resolution devices.

as for taking pictures outside work the devices mentioned above do fine for my needs. hell the vga res palm pix i used on my palm iiix took some good pictures but that seemed to have a pretty good lens.

it is better to have a simple camera always to hand than drag along another device and charger in my book. the e71 lives in a holster on my belt and is always ready to go. having to fetch or unpack a camera from my bag would have lost me some great photos of stuff that was happening around me. ymmv.

as for cheap service i'm in europe and use a prepay system. i average 10 a month for my phone. sometimes less some times more. when in hospital recently i used the e71 for web (99c for 50mb a day on prepay was sufficient for my needs using rss and lo bandwidth sites, cheaper than the newspapers others on my ward were buying to stave off boredom), email and etext reader as well as fm radio. i used an ipod for music and movies as the 160gb gave me a huge library to keep me amused with while the e71 was limited to 8gb. wow to think that i now see 8gb as a limitation. :-)
