Konqueror is just an application. It is completely replacable with another application (or set of applications) like Krusader or XFE (both of which run on the libraries that are automatically loaded by KDE). KDE works just fine without konqueror installed.

Personally I agree with his tab thing.

Much much worse, however, is Firefox's stupid behaviour when it comes to tabs that time out or whatever. If I'm downloading something and middle click to open a few new tabs, every so often one of them might time out. If that happens then if I go to that tab there's no way of getting the page I was actually wanting. Reload is blacked out, there's nothing in the location bar and the tab's title says "Untitled".

I'd also rather having the HTML messages for "page not found" than the dialogue messages but the exact same thing happens - there's a "file not found" message but there's no way of clicking "back" to get to the page I was just at, or "reload" to try the page again! That's just UI stupidity.

Though this is off topic, whenever I look at a Google Maps map of the world I'm always reminded of how distorted 2D maps actually are. For example, Greenland is actually quite a bit smaller than Australia (in fact, less than a third of the size). The actual country sizes definitely puts things into a better perspective than the 2D google maps.

As for the gimp vs photoshop, I find photoshop horrific to use personally and I'd rather the gimp every time. I'm also aware because I've gotten my head out of the bucket that it's not because the gimp is a better program, it's because I'm used to the gimp and I know exactly how to use it whereas I don't know exactly how to use photoshop. I'm not talking about the document format this time but visual standards. Every single major Microsoft product seems to look different nowadays. Seems funny that they actually expect people to use the API et al when they don't use it themselves!

Personally I like having applications be consistant. Even Linux with GTK and QT differences are quite consistant. It seems for Microsoft autohiding the menu or turning it a bright shade of blue wasn't enough. Now Microsoft are throwing out the perfectly good menu system for something that takes literally and it seems constantly a fifth of the screen space. For someone who refuses to use any browser other than Firefox simply because with Firefox I can squish every single button and bar and menu onto one small line, that's deeply offensive for me.

Besides this you need to move the mouse from one end of the screen to the other on the larger dimension every single time in this stupid tabbed interface.

Ah well it's Microsoft, the company responsible for some of the worst interfeces known to man.

There are 7 programs that support OD in a stable release. OOo is not one of them.

And no it's not a witch hunt. The only reason why they are doing this is because if Microsoft doesn't release Office anymore, suddenly their files are pretty much useless without expensive reverse engineering. Microsoft can also charge them whatever they like because after all, if the government doesn't like it and the deal's off, they can't read any of their files. Not exactly a good situation.

Huh? There are 7 programs that have implemented OD support in a stable release. Open Office is not one of them. How is this an OOo format?

And no, Microsoft is *not* moving to an open format. It is not documented and other programs can't read it without reverse engineering. That's not very good for data security or stopping vendor lock-in.
