sorry, to clarify: a person who breaks copy protection is a cracker, but that's just a small subset of "cracker". Basically anyone who breaks a security system be it on a network or on a CD is a cracker.
no it's not. You should perhaps click on the link the grandparent gave you: "One who breaks security on a system. Coined ca. 1985 by hackers in defense against journalistic misuse of hacker."
PDF is mostly used by academics. Scientists use it almost exclusively. Normal people usually use.doc or something equally (note: my opinion as a linux user!) ridiculous.
Even bundling it with windows won't affect the academic community because
1) Academics want to share knowledge to absolutely everyone
and
2) All computers can read PDFs, but not all computers use Windows.
Given this, I think that this Metro won't make too much of a splash unless it has support for a very wide range of systems. This is assuming that there are two equally featureful formats, however that's false because of latex etc. exporting to pdf.
I have been in a train wreck where people were crushed and killed less than a metre in front of me (no more taking front carriage for me). Even in that light I find nothing wrong with someone using that expression.
Don't the RIAA have a virtual monopoly on music, and so can't they place restrictions at will?
I think that it's good that people are listening, but without competition, somewhere else to go to to get the music that you want, why would the music industry do anything?
I found it the opposite. I use ubuntu and all I needed to do is write apt-get install apache.
After doing this the web server was up and running and I didn't need to do anything other than apt-get the packages (such as php, it had a quite readable list just by searching for apache) that I wanted the server to run and it just worked ((tm), apparently). It told me it was set up in/var/www I think and I didn't have to modify any config files to configure it.
I was surprised how easy it was because I had tried not long before to run a web server on Windows XP Pro and it took me a very very long time to get it up and running, and even then didn't have things like a database (you need to pay for that).
Perhaps it's just been a long time since you've tried this. Linux has made huge leaps in just the past couple of years in usability, and should this trend continue it will most definitely eclipse Longhorn before its release.
I'm pretty sure it's not until the end of 2008 in Australia, though it may actually be the beginning.
However I don't think it will be a huge problem, because set top boxes aren't that expensive to make, and so they'll be pretty cheap by the time DTV comes in.
What they should do is legislate that every new TV sold must have digital capability. I think that may help things a bit.
add on LiveCDs to that list will you? Beowulf Clusters and superclustering is another one. I would make a joke about that, but hey Microsoft don't even have anything that could faesably be called equivalent.
What the hell do you mean spli[n]tering? All he wants to do is continue to release security patches and bug fixes to Gnome 2. Sort of like Microsoft releasing security patches or bug fixes for Windows 2000 (do they still do that?).
Same thing happens with the linux kernel. The theory is that the second latest major release gets extremely stable, which appeases the coorperations and administrators, and you're free to add new features to the new release, which appeases the desktop linux crowd.
If you're sick of recompiling the kernel then get Ubuntu or a desktop distribution where you don't have to recompile your kernel. Even with systems with strange configurations (like mine) your computer just works. Don't use debian if you're not a sysadmin, don't use Slackware or Gentoo if you're not an enthusiast (which you obviously aren't).
heh, your one was better, just saying thanks. I was prehaps just being a smart arse, since after all I just got my beaut uim system working and I wanted something to test it out on! But japanese characters don't work well with slashdot it seems. Of course I should have read your sig before I responded - you're a few steps above me.
Probably the best one would have been "xiexie", which my brother assures me means "thanks mate" in Mandorin. So that would make it "Xiexie; arigatoo gozaimasu; thanks a lot, mate!"
You know you don't actually have to make the exact same joke three times.

easy, just replace every new line with a space and keep the semicolons.
An instant one-line program.
I'm flattered.
as opposed to . . . you going down on the plane?
I have been in a train wreck where people were crushed and killed less than a metre in front of me (no more taking front carriage for me). Even in that light I find nothing wrong with someone using that expression.
it's still not nearly as easy to set up on WinXP as on Linux.

"You have three questions"
"Are you really the head of the Kwicky Mart?"
"Yes"
"really?"
"Yes"
" really ?!"
"Yes. Thank you, please come again."

because they (falsely) believe that releasing the source code for OS/2 will somehow destroy security.
If exploits were so easy to find through source the programmers would have fixed them already.
From the article: "Film studios have one month to unprotect DVDs"

oh no you aint seen nothing yet. That fucking piece of arse gave me pink z blocks as my first ten blocks.
It's made by the devil.
btw: apt-get install bastet

mmm. I remember them arguing for ages as to whether to put JRE 3 or 4 into Slackware and whether that'd violate the GPL.

ah but at least you know that he would be typing faster than everyone else because of his hyper-efficient keyboard...
skip[!sex(female nudity)]
Great idea, but I think I have a better name for the new combined country, perhaps something along the lines of "Australia".

no I typed arigatou gozaimasu in japanese, since I am an aspiring Japanese student :)
But yeah it means "thank you very much" quite formally actually.
No it'd be easy - just make the middle 70% red.
