"If people want to share your idea with others then you should be glad, you are appreciated."
and how about my landlord, you think he will be glad to have a creative guy as a tenant? Nah, in my experience, he still wants me to pay the rent. You think big computer games, software, movies are all made at the weekend by bored teenagers living in moms basement?
lucky you. Tough shit for the artists eh? I guess none of them have rent to pay right? And you only copy music from rich musicians, where you have checked their finances and ensured they can afford to be ripped off I'm sure.
indeed, and how about the little guy? Ok I make games and not music, but maybe they will allow that too? I don't suppose I'd be losing millions of dollars, but I doubt the French government will track me down and send me a EUR 20 now and then, as my share of the trading of my copyrighted work. The future for online games, music and movies is for people to pay for a hassle free downlaod, without silly restrictions, but without making illegal copying too easy. this French scheme is insane.
way to go anonymous coward, you clearly know fuck all about how the games industry works. and only the slashdot crowd will mod someone as a troll for daring to suggest that intellectual property be respcted. And the real funny thing is, some of you are probably programmers. I take it your products make money regardless of piracy right?
well said, these scumbags were pirating work that thousands of people had worked damned hard on. I dont care if the trendy slashdot crowd dont like the films they were trading, nobody forces them to watch them. If you worked for two years as a set builder on the aviator (for example) and are now out of work with no next movie lined up, you probably hope they throw away the key for these guys.
do you back the right of Iran to build nuclear power stations then? ditto north korea, Iraq and Syria? Nuclear has many problems. Wind Wave, Solar, tidal, and energy conservation have much less.
The people who own the product can set any price they want. I make videogames, and I set their price. you can moan about the price (and some people do), but the answer is "dont fcking buy it then". If you dont like the price of a product, tough shit, music aint clothing or shelter, you dont need it to live. If you feel so passionate about free music, nobody will stop you releasing music YOU created for free, its when you tell toher people who create products what price THEY should charge for them that they get upset, and who can blame them. How would you like it if I demanded that YOU work for free?
And maybe if game designers spent as much time designing innovative new genres and subjects rather than doing another "lets kill people motherfucker!" style games to get the tabloid press coverage, we would all be a lot happier. The real idiots in this story are the people who think this is a good idea for a game. Ultra violence is the last resort of the clueless designer.
maybe not in the 'safe' retail mainstream, but there are innovative games in the indie arena, such as Gish, ShortHike, Cute Knight, Pontifex, and dare I mention: www.democracygame.com Look beyon walmart and youll find some great innovative and cheap games you can buy online.
I dont know the opinions of most of the US, I do know that its the only major western nation that has serious doubts about the likliehood of both theories being true enough to teach in schools. Of course, both theories need to be challenged, but if 99% of scientists agree on A, its not sensible to give A and B equal weight in education. And obviously my post is a much needed rebuttal to the "america fuck yeah" parent:D
excellent post. Good luck against the arrogance of the slashdot pro-nuclear lobby though. If the romans had used nuclear power, we would STILL have their waste
Hel, I'd give my right arm for some mod points right now, so I could do the decent thing and bung an interesting on this. In the UK, I signed up to JUICE which is basically the same thing, but no price cap;(
Am I the only one who thinks wind farms are a thing of neauty. I know it would actually make me MORE likely to buy a property if I had sight of one.I've driven out of my way to get up close to things and take a look. I love the elegant simplicity of the things. drawing power from the very air you breathe. I'm not a rleigious man, but if I was, I'd equate it to taking energy directly from god. Energy is thrown at us all day all over the planet, and we ignroe it but dig up coal instead. That's madness. Seeing a wind farm or a solar farm gives me faith that mankind isn't as stupid as he sometimes seems.
your worried about terrorist attacks, and your solution is to build nuclear power stations? jesus. Are you going to paint bullseyes on the things? Sizewell B was inflitrated by protesters 3 times. They even wrote slogans on the reactor itself. You really prefer more nuclear waste-generating facilities as a protection against terrorism?
yawn. the way you are producing energy is affecting society. if that energy s produced with no impact on anyone else, then its 'free' in the true economic sense. As long as its production DOES affect me (by global warming, security risks or increased cost of waste disposal) then Ill have an opinion on how freely we rush to produce more of it. Way to go on showing how not to be arrogant though.
im all in favour of market economics. electricity should be charged for according to the costs of production. Currently thsi is NOT the case, because of the negative effects of carbon emmission in tis manufacture. Thats what economists call an externality. Thats why governments chip in to apply the externality to its cause, rather than letting polluting industries screw up everyone else, and grow rich without paying the real costs. There is nothing wrong with using a tax to apply an externality. Thats not inconsistent with a belief in markets, just a realisation that the market model fails when it comes to externalities.
energy efficiency. The amount of heat energy alone that we throw away is staggering. In winter time, most UK high street stores heat their shops and leave heir doors open 'invitingly' onto the street. Almost every business PC in the UK is left switched on overnight, over weekends, and even when the employee goes on holiday, ditto the monitors. Streetlights are dumb, and left on throughout the night even where nobody is to be seen for miles. Almost every consumer device you buy has a power-wasting standby mode, and wastes huge chunks of energy as heat and noise. Like it or not, we throw most of our energy away needlessly. People make no effort to save energy, and the energy consumption is rarely a factpr is purchase deicisons for consumer devices. This needs to change, and the best way to do this is to shift more of the tax burden onto energy by means of a carbon tax. Building nuclear power so we can keep on throwing energy away is madness. Lets do the sensible thing and clamp down more on our wastefull consumption of the stuff.
you forgot the security risk. you need armed guards at both the station and the waste disposal site. and the waste site needs to be guarded for generations. Thats damned expensive, and just 1 reason why the real cost of nuclear is way higher than solar, wind, tidal, goethermal, or good old energy conservation.
you are right, war does kill people it shouldnt. and the american government started this one. A recent report by a nobel prize winning economist puts the cost to the US at 2 trillion dollars. You getting your moneys worth?
Enemies may be in that building, but there may also be civilians, and probably civilians next door. Just because you know an insurgent is in the living room of #44 derkaderka st, doesnt mean you should level the whole street. Sure, you kill the bad guy, but you orphan most of the kids in his neigbourhood. How many of the orphans end up as suicide bombers?

like be in denial about evolution AND global warming? Yeah I would have thought that impossible in 2006 too.

listen to yourself... "no chance". you mean "less chance, as far as we can estimate". Go watch the film "titanic". she was "unsinkable".

I think the difference might be that this time, you started the war, and the 'enemy' are defending their own homes.

So? Your current president seems to think that stuff doesnt apply to him from what I've read.
