    Well, being that it will only go up 6.5 mm in my lifetime, and I live at an elevation of 692 feet (Minneapolis), I won't have beach-front property any time soon.

    My oldest computer is an XT box, but that doesn't work anymore.

    My oldest working computer is a 1995 Acer Acros P75 with 48 megs of ram and a 1.2 gigabyte hard drive.

    The oldest piece of hardware in my gaming machine (this one) is my Sound Blaster Live Platinum (1999), but that will be replaced shortly.

    Sorry. I didn't talk about myself. I was talking about mainstream consumers. I've been building my own computers for five years now. You don't get the nice package-warranty, but you get it all for half the price. I groan about the price of the operating system, since it ends up being 25-30% of the cost of my computer.

    Yeah. That's what I found. The other program I use is Macromedia Dreamweaver. I've heard that it's terrible to try to use that with Wine, unlike the games that are ported (that actually work under Linux).

    So, what do you still do on Windows?

    Now that I'm out of school, I just use MS to play Battlefield 1942 and other games. I can do everything else on Linux.

    Linus will get a cease and decist letter, and that will be the end of it. I'm aware of programs such as Wine, but they still have a long way to go. Writing it into the kernel would be pointless and clunky.

    Part of it is also that we all pay the MS tax when we buy a computer from Circuit City, Best Buy, Comp USA...etc. If users could get MS-free machines (subtract Windows XP from the price) at retail stores besides Walmart, I think people would go for em. I know I'd try to get customers to switch at my store.

    It's funny cause writing mail scripts is so easy with the PHP mail() function. Make sure that you hard-code the email address in the script (not as a hidden field), and you'll be set!

    They actually proved on a discovery channel special that the extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by a 10 degree (Celcius) increase in global temperatures that was initially caused by gasses being released from the bottom of the ocean floor. Sorry, I don't have a link. It was an excellent program though! :D

    You caught me. I'm actually from St. Paul, 200 miles from the border. My college girlfriend's parents just live on the border. I am kept warm by the emissions of the Twin Cities and its 3,000,000 inhabitants.
    I read once that you guys have nine cows for every person! That's a lot of beef! Did you have to sell off a lot of cows during the drought this year?

    Hey man, I hear ya! As long as Bush and his buddies don't get the money. I'd be all for spending it on higher education and better wages for teachers/professors. College is too expensive, and teachers don't make enough money.

    We have this between South Dakota and Minnesota: South Dakotans don't pay income taxes, but their sales taxes are high, so they come across the border and spend their money in Minnesota. I guess they're the ones getting the deal, but if you've seen South Dakota before, all they have to go home to is some cows and lots of empty land.

    I bet they could use some of that 87 billion dollars ($290/person in this country) to subsidize internet purchases for the tax values in consumers' states. Meaning, every time you buy something online from a different state, the feds pay for the sales tax on it (7.5% here in MN). It is just an idea. I'm not a big fan of blowing money on Iraq!

    I like the current system: you pay sales tax if you are located in the same state as the manufacturer. Living in Minnesota, a service state (Target, Best Buy...etc), it is nice to buy goods from California and other states without sales tax, which can be larger than the shipping costs for large goods.

    ...not to mention that by adding taxes to online goods, they will kill a market that has thrived because they have been an extra 6-9% cheaper than the retail price after taxes (depending on the state). Adding state taxes to the goods discourages the consumer from shopping online anymore, killing the online businesses.

    I second that motion. Javascript, like Java is good at dealing with string insertion/replacement. You don't even have to buy a book. Just search Google for guides and/or an example of text replacement.
    In fact, If you pay me, I'll even write it for you. Like other people in IT, I'd stand on my head for money at this point.

    I actually went to college next to the largest Somali community in the United States. I've also taught (volunteer work) 3rd-5th grade to students at a charter school in the basement of a government housing project. Oh yeah, and I spent a month or so in Cuba, studying music and interacting with the people of a country with a per-capita income of $2,300. Were you expecting the average slashdot joe?

    Do you understand what my post was saying? Here in MN, if you're paying 50% taxes, you're making $150,000 per year (and we have high income taxes). If you cannot pay for food/clothing off of $75,000 take-home, you really need to find a financial advisor.

    People move to cities to find jobs. That's why cities are so huge/dense in 3rd-world countries. There are even less jobs in rural areas than in cities.
    Taxes are a burdon for everyone. They are just more of a burdon for people who are better able to pay them (have a higher net income).

    P.S. Run your posts through Microsoft Word for spelling errors. Some words were hard to "translate"

    Yes. I do believe that it is fucked up that employers can discriminate based on income class. There are far worse discriminations involved in Human Resources that do not pertain to this thread that I will not mention.
    Your logic perplexes me. I doubt that everybody who is on welfare is a druggie. I have some friends who are the people you were talking about (drugs, booze, pot). They are worthless...yes, but the working poor are not worthless. They are just honest people who cannot afford the essentials.

    If you cannot afford food and clothing, you are not paying 50% taxes. If you're in that bracket and still cannot afford the essentials, you need to avoid the casino and the race track.
