Haha, that reminded me of something. When we got our first computer in 92(I was 12, I believe), my dad is a lefty, so we would move the mouse to the left side. We kept the normal button configuration until the left mouse button started going out, then we switched the right and left buttons.
The way it ended up, on any given day, the buttons could be switched, and the mouse could be on either side of the keyboard/desk. I just learned to go into windows(or civilization 1), click something and see what happened, and adjust the rest of my computing for the day.
I guess that helps me now, since I admin an office with all kinds of people who get confused easily, including some lefties, and I can ambidextrously use any pointing device conceived by a biped:)
Actually, only having one button would make helping people do stuff over the phone much easier. Telling someone to click the icon, then having them ask "which button" is a pain in the ass sometimes. God forbid you have someone right click and icon, then tell them to click on rename. They invariably will ask me "wait, right click on the icon then right click rename", or some other bastardization of what I said.

Think computer literate, non-geek user. My dad's pretty good with a computer, and when I first showed him Firefox(back when it was phoenix), he loved it, but he wouldn't know an extension unless I showed him one. A book with a big list of cool ones may have a thing or two that he'd like to use, but didn't even know existed.

DTD is where it's at, man. We have the president of Chile's and Will Ferrell.
No, it's pretty much just off-topic trolling on your part. I'm a fan of macs as well, but I don't walk into a PC discussion and start shit. Zealots are a very strong dissuader from getting people to try new things, be it Firefox, Thunderbird, Macs, or Linux.
I've been thinking about upgrading from my barton 2500 for a while, and if the Pentium M's come down, I'd be all over it, since I'm sure they'd come out with a shuttle-style mini-case for it, like what I have now.
Eh, I've got a math major girlfriend already, and hopefully I'll have a sixpack(non-beer) by spring break. I just like showing off tech stuff to random people, it's my inner geek.
Well, the vast majority of non-tech people at my school use kazaa, imesh, etc to grab music. Everything they get is in MP3 format, and I'm fairly certain they would panic if they saw and ogg and it didn't play correctly in winamp, especially if they are using an older version of it.
If it gets opened to the big guys, it's only a matter of time before the little guys(us) get a crack at it too.
If I could pop a few episodes of scrubs or iron chef america on it, then have something to do while waiting for my calc2 teacher to show up, I'd be more inclined to buy one. As of right now, my newest portable is an old-school gameboy, but I'm open to change.
You have to keep in mind that ogg and FLAC are basically never used in the general populace, as opposed to the mp3s that college kids(me) download off the internet.
Lemme give you an example. My dad is pretty good with computers. He's been using them for as long as I've been alive, he even does a bit of amateur/semi-pro recording using Protools. He plays music with his friends just about every sunday. If I asked him if he used ogg/flac, he would just look at me funny. That's what's keeping ogg and flac playback down, the lack of demand, not any sort of anti-geek no-lossless uberquality conspiracy.
I'm also fairly certain that ogg requires a bit more horsepower in the processor department than mp3 does, and that would raise costs a bit.
That's a damn sweet idea. Of course, there may be some "prior art", if you happen to remember the whistler keychains:) Those were a little attachment, that if you whistled, or perhaps clapped, it would make a beeping noise. My best friend's mom had one when we were little, since he would always hide her keys, but didn't think to remove the whistler thingy.
Sorry man, I always give my Canadian friends shit about their money being worthless, but you deserve hot hot mac love as well.
I guess I can empty my pockets of change and mail it to you, that should cover about half of it at the current rate, right?;)
Maybe they are using invite-only style sites, and want to brag? Hell, I'm all about increasing my e-penis, but not at the possible expense of losing a good resource.
Yeah, I'm thankful that in the past 4 years I've been successful at staying away from the cesspools and trying new stuff. Online communities, especially the forerunners in new filesharing ones, are a fun type of people to be with. When you start noticing a huge influx of users, without a huge input of new material, you know the warez kiddies/irc leechers/kazaa people have found out about your new haven, and it's time for somewhere else.
DC++ is still ok, as long as you can find a good passworded hub, and WASTE is insanely good until some jackass gets into your WASTE group, then meshes it with his existing group, adding a few hundred leechers to your few hundred contributers, ruining the whole thing.
I believe that this idea would consume more resources, as the clients having to report amount downloaded from each IP, instead of just a blanket total upload. If I'm connected to a torrent now, I just report X. If I'm on a torrent giving info in the way you suggested, I'd be reporting X Kb per second per peer, and if I'm grabbing stuff from 20 peers, that's significantly more traffic that I'd be sending out, hurting my ability to seed.
Them's fightin' words, boy. VI 4 lyfe, I'll shank you right here in front of your friends, pretty boy. Best step off!

Eh, I don't think it will be all that bad. With only 1 type of DRM out there, once someone cracks one, they'll have them all open.

I do have a pocketpc from work, but I'd prefer something that was less geek, and more chic. Besides, PDA's dont have any games that I wanna play.

That was a pretty shitty attempt at a first post, you gotta have lots of random replies typed up and ready to go in notepad or vi/emacs/whatever.
ps XP is pretty good stuff and not crazy like ME I mean man oh man.
Oh crap, GNU makes it 4! (and yes, I know the difference between GNU and linux and GNU/linux, all that jazz)
Ah yes, the xmas islands, the most infamous registrar ever. How I miss thee, original location.
Hey man, bash is linux, so I guess it's a three-way fight now :)

I know, I've been putting off buying a mac for quite some time, this makes it much harder to just say no.

Dammit, where's the helpful person with one of those mirrordot or nyud links when you really need one?
I'm thinking that your comment is a combo of both insightful and redundant :)
