resolved by simply taxing him the cost of healthcare
That is a good idea, although a selective tax like that will cause a protest because a lot of Americans want something for nothing.
Here in BC, you can't receive income assistance (a more flexible variant that also covers people who earn too little money to support themselves) unless you apply for a certain number of jobs each week (they even check with the businesses you applied at from time to time), complete employability courses, and demonstrate a reasonable level of effort at job hunting.
That's another good idea but I'm not sure if it really works in the US. During the summer of 1996, congress pass and President Clinton signed the "Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996." but as you can see, the problem remains.
That's setting aside the ridiculous fact that non-harmful drugs like pot are illegal of course.
I'm not opposed to legalizing pot in the US, one thing I noticed among many of my stoner friends is that pot seems to inhibit ambition. I believe that being poor and having no ambition will just keep you there. Besides, $5 won't even come close to supporting a pot habit for a week here in the US.
I'm not against helping people who are down because of events beyond their control (i.e. born disabled), but I to have problem with help out lazy leeches. There was a case in New York where former Mayer Giuliani wanted drug testing for welfare recipiants, which was struck down by the courts. Doesn't it make you sick that they can test you for drug useage when you apply for a job but not when you apply for welfare? How can you pour more money into welfare without making sure that the food stamps don't end up with drug dealers? If we can cut aid to the leeches, there will be more money for the truely needy.
Here are some of my real life examples:
I had a roommate that spend around $200 in video games per month (that doesn't even account for the costs of consoles or computers). He was young and healthy so I couldn've gotten basic health insurance for less than $100 a month but spent the money on games instead. Should the taxpayers pay for his healthcare because he'd rather spend his money on games?
So are you saying that the Americans eat poorly and exercise less because of high health care costs? Or are you impling that diet and exercise has no impact on health care costs?
To those regions, a conservative is what the US would call a liberal Democrat.
And since when did liberal Democrats wanted to reach out to Bush? Warming relationship with the US is one of their goals.
We spend more and get less. Nice.
My wife got an MRI in less than a week so that counts for something. If Canadian healthcare is so perfect, why are private clinics poping up?
From http://www.canadian-healthcare.org/page6.htmlThe advantage of private clinics is that they typically offer services with reduced wait times compared to the public health care system. For example, obtaining an MRI scan in a hospital could require a waiting period of months, whereas it could be obtained much faster in a private clinic.
Why did they pass a law to prevent private clinics? What are they afraid of?
Under federal law, private clinics are not legally allowed to provide services covered by the Canada Health Act. Regardless of this legal issue, many do offer such services.
But at the Canada Diagnostic Centre clinic in Halifax, Viscount said public demand for private clinics in Nova Scotia -- where waiting times are weeks rather than months at hospitals -- will remain.
In her case, the MRI scans of her brain could show telltale fissures and reveal multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable neurological condition that in extreme cases causes blindness and paralysis.
With early treatment, the disease is easier to combat. That's why patients eager to relieve anxiety will keep paying for private-clinic results, said Viscount.
"I think it's another option for the public," the woman, in her 20s, said before her test.
"You have a choice of where you want to eat, where you want to drink. This is the same.
But critics say the cost associated with such private clinics is out of reach for most families.
Sharon Sholzberg-Gray, president of the Ottawa-based Canadian Healthcare Association, says a family of four could face a $10,000 bill.
"There's a certain limited client base for that. That is not the way to run a health-care system and that is not going to solve access issues for most Canadians."
She says the opening of private clinics highlights the government's need to address a shortage of family physicians.
Combined with dwindling savings and rising healthcare costs, it looks like Canada's on track to becoming a 51st state of USA. No wonder why its citizens are fed up with their government. Do you still think that the grass looks greener on the other side? Oh and bare in mind that the above article was updated January 2006.
Even assuming their Democratic replacements aren't any better, losing a few seats will help limit the damage that Bush and the Republicans can do.
While I'm not fan of the current administration, I don't think that blindingly voting Democrats to spite Republicans. The problem is that there are too many people who expect the government to do everything for them. Take a look at Europe and Canada. People expected the liberals to fix everything for them and when that didn't happen, they started to elect more conservatives. If Democrats gain power in a couple of years, do you really think that the Americans will:
1. Spend less money on crap that they don't need. Even worse, putting it on a credit card? Current savings rate for the Americans is at -0.4% and it looks like Canadians are headed that way as well.
2. Eat better and exercise more? While people bitch about health care costs going up, they do nothing to curb it themselves because obesity rate is going up and I'm pretty sure that doesn't help with the medial costs.
3. Have higher turnout for the Election Day? Kerry was a favorite amongst the younger crowd but unfortunately for him, they proved again that they have the poorest turnout of all age groups. This shows that while the younger crowd bitches loud, they constantly fail to deliver.
Really, people are you are no better than the right-wingers that you supposedly oppose. Bush said "You are either with us or against us." When did I ever say I love to force my fellow citizens to help those doomed crusades? Or is that because you group anyone who opposes your self-righteous ideas are the "foes"?
I don't AC or Cable TV because I consider them as wants, not needs. The fact is that majority of people who live below so called "poverty line" do have them. So we should pump them up with more money because they mishandle money so well? The real problem is excessive consumberism and without taking care of that give the "poor" more money won't increase their wealth. They will just blow their money on unless crap and make those corporations even more rich.
Don't focus on the symptoms, cure the disease. Try checking books out like "The Millionaire Next Door". There are millionaires who made it without cheating just as there are poor who are poor through no fault of their own.
Since Dell will be responsible for providing tech support for the machines they sell (like OEM versions of Windows), maybe they can put together a free version of RedHat like CentOS did and ship them with their computers, or even strip out all the server related components for desktop only computers.
every single one of them has one or two industry specific applications that are just not available on Linux.
Some of my clients on my side business are dry cleaners that use such industry specific applications that run on Windows. The software vendors usually sell their software as a package (That is, with all the hardware, installed and ready to run. You don't even get an install CD). I'll bet that someone can write software like that to run on Linux and the clients won't even know the difference.
He created a situation that directly insinutated government shutdown, then tried to play the matter up as "irresponsible western journalism."
While I'm not advocating that he did, he does have a good point. The press is so bent up on being "The first one to break the story", their QA went down the toilet.
Then should't you think that your self-respect is more important than money those guys got from VCs? Not to mention that history shows that businesses with flash ideas but no real product usualy go bust like the dot bombs of late 90's.
The difference between someone who is successful and someone who isn't is execution. The world is full of people who dream big but don't get off their ass and do it.
That reminds me of my brother-in-law. He came up with a lot of good ideas but gets bored quickely and hop on to another get-rich-quick scheme. I guess that's why he'll never be in articles like this.
It looks like 30 year olds are still allowed so you still have a year to create something cool and build a business around it. I'm pretty sure cure for cancer or AIDS counts.
At least MS (Windows ) and Apple (OSX ) got it right.
I'm not sure if MS did get it right. At first, they used letters (NT) for business OS and years (95, 98) for home OS. Then it switched to year (2000) for business OS and letters (ME) for home OS. Then MS combined the business and home OSes into a single codebase (which I think was a good idea) and called it XP, but kept their server OSes in year naming format.
You are correct in your definitions. I was using the term to mean a left-winger in this context. It's like the word "football", which has a different meaning in the US vs. rest of the world.
but my gut feeling is that it is getting harder and harder for people to move on.
Some people view outsourcing of tech support to India hurts their chances of getting a job but I see it as an opportunity. I do PC repair/network setup on the side and most of the clients agree that Indian tech support sucks royally. You can take this opportunity to set up a business for yourself or sit back and let overpriced Geek Squad (Best Buy) provide services that people need.

I'd like a tiny fraction of that money handed to people who CAN'T earn money for themselves.
You are more than free to hand your own money to those people who CAN'T earn money for themselves.

or offering a choice of Windows and Linux (saving $10 a machine on those that choose Linux), and having to train a group of linux techs?
But then you are assuming that their techs in India actually knows Windows in the first place.

I'd be pissed, too, if I worked my ass off for four years and have nothing to show for.
I'd fire myself but I heard that firing yourself can make you go blind.
Maybe because it's given that older folks have more experience and (hopefully) wisdom and thus it's easier for the older folks to be successful.

If I were a "religious conservative", why would I want McCain over the other republicans...
Extreme liberals believe that they are the center of the world and consider anyone who disagrees with them to be neo-conservatives.

I disagree with that because hard core liberals are as bad as hard core coservatives because their motto is "Either my way or the highway".
