Wow. I haven't read slashdot for about 3 months now, because, well, mainly because I was sick of all the 13 year old trolls that pop up in every discussion..

But I thought tonight, I'ld have a look and see what had happened, and this is what I get... font is too small to read, and the dark green section headers are just horrible.. way too imposing on the otherwise drab gray and white. The first thing I thought was that oh wow.. slashdot has finally started using CSS which means I should be able to find a "change themes" link, but uh, no.. it doesn't look like they provide that option.

So I think I'll just leave for another several months, and see if things have improved when I next return.

heh.. I found learning Thai numbers was very useful. I found it very amusing to watch an old British woman asking in the queen's english "how ... much ..... is ..... this ?" and watching the look of "oh boy, I'm gonna make money on this one" come across the seller's face.

After she left, I walked over and asked (in Thai) for the price of the same thing and he started at half what she had paid after bargaining... I didn't buy it either.

Yep.. even in large shopping malls like MBK in Bangkok. Last time I was there, I saw multiple places selling nothing but pirated copies, and one shop selling what looked like legitimate boxed copies of software for much more (but they could have just been selling copies (in boxes) as well).

And if you paid $USD 5, you got ripped off.

And it's the same in China as well.

When the average person's wage is as low as it is there, the cost of legitmate software is so unrealistic that nobody will pay it. Microsoft tried to address that a few years ago by dropping the price on their software *significantly* (but still more than the cost of the pirated copy), but I don't think it worked.. it just stirred up a hornet's nest in other countries about how come people in Thailand could buy MS Office so much more cheaply than people in other counties etc etc...

I wish one of these years people would actually take timezones into account. I live in New Zealand, so it's well into the 2nd of April before I start seeing April Fools jokes appearing on slashdot, and because slashcode takes my timezone into account, the stories appear with April 2nd dates on them, making it even harder (okay, not this year cause they were all in pink) to work out which is which.

Trillian seems to do the same thing when I get an incoming message - it's like the driver truncates the start of the sample and then tries to play catchup and messes it all up.

I'm pretty sure it's not my ears, cause it was fine yesterday before I reinstalled.

Sure I had to Sudo apt-get this, and tar xvf that (still don't REALLY know what I'm doing when I use these options, but I'm sure there's a HOWTO when I get a moment)

x = extract (extract the files from the archive) v = verbose (show the filenames while doing so) f = filename (you specify the name of the tar file after the f)

so 'tar xvf filename.tar' eXtracts (Verbosely) from File filename.tar

you may also have used the z (use gzip compression) or j (use bzip2 compression )options - eg,

    tar zxvf filename.tar.gz

    tar zxvf filename.tgz

    tar jxvf filename.tar.bz2

I work in 3rd level IT support at a University.

We installed cabling and RJ45 sockets into all the desks in the library as part of its refit. 90% of those sockets have since had pens shoved in them in order to break the pins. Many of them are also full of chewing gum. It's going to cost us quite a bit of money to have them all replaced, and the problem will just keep happening

It's not that we expect that all students will attempt to mate their pens with our network sockets, but we do expect that a small number of students are hell bent on ruining it for everyone else, and we have to allow for that.

Rebates must be an American thing... In NZ, I've never heard of this sort of craziness. If the vendor is offering a discount on their product, they do it through the retailer, like you suggest. It seems that for some reason, Americans accept the idea that they should pay full price to a retailer, and then snail mail in a piece of paper to get a cheque back in the mail that they can then cash ? I can only imagine how much paperwork and paper handling has to occur to complete that process. I never use cheques in this country, and I don't know many people who do, because everyone here accepts eftpos or direct deposits into their bank account. I guess I'm just used to avoiding paperwork.

In a written statement, Mr Kerr stated that the MPAA recently became aware that people have been "overhearing" music intended for the licensee only, and that this clear abuse of the artist's rights had to be stopped and stopped now. "I want to see anybody who hears our product without having paid for a license put in jail. Its the only way we're going to stop those criminals!"
