I went to the school that has been at the top of the list for ~9 years now.

Everything was swept under the table. Not a single drinking or drug incident made it to the local news, magically.

There was a guy my freshmen class that got caught dealing. Not only did nothing happen to him, nothing ever made it to the papers. I don't even remember hearing of any on campus discipline. There were never any parties broken up by police, and the one or two that were, they also never made it to the paper.

When I transferred to a Big 10 school, that was in the same state (That's also >10x larger). There was none of that. Freshmen getting kicked out of school first week for possession. It was so integrated into the town so the town cops had their hand all the underage drinking and PIs. They all made it to the paper. They're consistently in the top 10, but not #1. (Of a different list).

*Funny thing that when I started to interview. I got asked if I went to a technical college for 2 years. Just because you're #1 in Engineers minds doesn't mean you're #1 in HR's. As soon as I dropped them from my Resume I actually started getting callbacks.

  5. Re:Stay With Me Here on What Do You Do With a Personal Domain? · · Score: 5, Interesting

Well this is what I do.

First off I have Dreamhost which allows unlimited domains, space & bandwidth. It's not 6-nines, but it works for me. Full SSH, SFTP, etc access.

    1) My 'domain' is blank. It points to nothing.

    2) Every picture I've ever taken is at pictures.X.org. Password Protected. If I want to show someone something I'll open a folder for them using htaccess. It's also my off-site backup for my pictures.

    2) SVN. Dreamhost lets you easily setup SVN. I honestly just discovered version control in the last month (More or less took the time to learn it) and absolutely love it. So all my pet projects have an svn.X.org page.

    3) Sub domains for where I post the most. Since I post quite a few photoshops/images to Fark. I have a fark.X.org that is nothing but pictures. I have a vw.X.org for posting pictures of my Dubs to VWVortex and TDICLub. I try not to move the directory around at all. I hate digging up a 6 month old "how to" and find all the images are broken.

    4) Unlimited e-mail. I have catch-all turned on. slashdot@X.org, fark@x.org, facebook@X.org, I know exactly when and where spam comes from. (Damn you USA Rugby*).

    5) Subdomains to my computers. Both my linux desktop and mac laptop have scripts to update mac/linux.X.org with the current IP.

    6) gallery.X.org for people in my family to upload stuff. (With Gallery2).

    7) A few friends have websites at name.X.org. I create a new FTP or SFTP user for them

    8) If you have SSH access, I route everything through at work. Dynamic proxy and I don't go through the work proxy servers.

Half of those blur the line between domain/host but you get the idea.

    * Why the hell are you giving out my e-mail address?
    [Sir, we're not]
Then why is it I'm getting spam at usarugby@X.org?
[Well you must have given that e-mail address out somewhere else]
No, why would I do that?
    [Um, it's not our fault]

Go to the store. Buy X as a gift for someone. Notice the line at the bottom that says "Tax".

Only time it's tax exempt is if you're going to resell it. I had friends who bought stuff at Sams Club to sell in their small gas station, they didn't pay taxes at Sams. Their customers paid tax at their place.

Everyone is guilty of neglecting SOMETHING. It's not just that it's human nature but the time you spend keeping your computer up to date your grandparents may have spent keeping their guns polished. My own anecdotes.

I do think that it's getting over diagnosed these days, but I was diagnosed with it "back in the day". I thank my parents when I can for not putting me on anything.

Even when I'm running the meetings I will find I will stare directly at the person talking and have no clue what they were talking about because in the last 30 seconds my mind has been on 50 different subjects, mostly about other work I'm doing.

ADHD is akin to having a little buzzer in your head that tells you you have to switch tasks or at least what you're thinking about. Some (good) days the timer is set to a nice 5 minutes. Meaning I can get in a solid 5 minutes of programming. Worst case days it's set at 30 seconds. Meaning every 30 seconds I have to switch what I'm either thinking about or doing. If I'm in the middle of a line of code. I have to check my e-mail. Go to the bathroom. Look around the room. Wonder why the light in that socket is out. Read the posters in my cube. Look at other peoples posters. EVERY 30 SECONDS. Having concurrent 'things' going helps. (Watching movies, etc) because I can listen to the movie and still keep working on what I'm working on.

I agree, it's hard for even 'normal' people to concentrate on boring stuff. The difference is that there are times that there are things I enjoy and should be concentrating on. Worst case scenario is sex. (And this should trigger some +5 Funny's at my expense) But there are some times where my mind is jumping to what is that noise downstairs, did I switch over the laundry, what am I having for dinner, etc. And trust me, it's not fun.

I'm looking at going back to grad school, and I honestly don't think I'd be able to do it. I'm going to talk to my primary care physician and see if I can test out some of the ADHD drugs. If they improve my concentration at work. I just don't want something that takes a while to 'build up'. I more or less want to be able to say "this is a concentration day" pop a pill in the morning and concentrate at work, and on the weekends be able to do my own thing.

(Since starting this post. I've responded to 2 business & 4 personal e-mails. Checked when the best time to plant garlic is (came up this weekend). Updated the mysql pages for a website I run. Opened 3 other php files. Opened the Facebook API page. And launched 2 instances of Matlab. I have 3 rows in my Windows task bar full.)
