good point. It should be added that this is also looking out for viruses/worms that could make their way to a running copy of Virtual PC, especially if it's running an older version of Windows. There have never been any issues of the sort with VPC, but now that MS is making it (previous versions were made by Connectix) I anticipate that holes will develop.

If you don't use Microsoft or Norton products, your Mac will run just fine. By now, any Mac power user has learned this from experience.
(Norton/SUM/SAM was/is essential in OS 9 and below, but makes such a mess of any drive with OS X installed on it that it becomes hell, literal Hell to troubleshoot and repair. Even the newest version doesn't seem to understand the concept of disk permissions. It's kind of lame; my customers suffer, and I have to battle with Norton if it is installed on a customer's machine.

...and I die a little more every day.

Not really, though. Panther comes out tomorrow. :D

If you must spout more FUD, please stay on Windows. iTunes is freeware, and it does its job simply and effectively, and not many pieces of Windows software can make that claim.

Apple doesn't need to "sway" people like you. You seem to have your mind made up already and only live to nitpick about things you don't understand.

here, try this: go to your iTunes prefs and choose the other option of how you want to use your iPod. (btw, why would you use anything else for ripping, unless you're ripping to WMA?) You can tell it to auto-sync with your library so that you don't need to re-specify your music folder.

If you really must use a different piece of software to rip the CD, just drag that album's folder into your iTunes library window or any playlist window. It will automatically be added, and sorted as necessary.

Please.. no more FUD from the MS camp.. please?

    The stuff?

According to this place, this is the patent relating to the ingredients:

Controversy, Controversy, Controversy - Like most things having to do with lava, the official United States patent is a thing of uncertainty. For many years, we've been told that the US Patent for lava lamps was patent #3,570,156 of March 16, 1971. But recently we've come across a very, very convincing document from 1July 11, 1968 showing US Patent #3,387,396. Read on!

    US Patent #3,570,156
Although this type of motion lamp was invented in 1963 by Edward Craven Walker, and patented in England by his company in 1964, this US Patent dates to March 16, 1971. (Can you believe 8 years passed before the lamp was patented in the States?)
Of course, the patent itself is vague concerning proportions of ingredients. The lava component is said to consist of "a solidified globule of mineral oil such as Ondina 17 (R.T.M.) with a light paraffin, carbon tetrachloride, a dye and paraffin wax."
The clear liquid is roughly 70/30% (by volume) water and a liquid which will raise the coefficient of cubic thermal expansion and encourage the movement. The patent recommends slip agents such as propylene glycol for this. However, glycerol, ethylene glycol, and polyethylene glycol (aka PEG) are also mentioned as being sufficient. May did some research of these chemicals and found that these aren't cheap. The best prices she found are at VWR Scientific Products where 500ML of propylene glycol is 10.75 plus shipping. We never tried this formula (it seemed over our heads).

    US Patent #3,387,396
Submitted by David George Smith of London on behalf of Craven Walker's Crestworh Company. The patent falls under Display Devices. The Abstract of the Disclosure reads, "A display device comprising a container having two substances therein, with one of the substances being of a heavier specific gravity and immiscible with the other substance, with the first substance being of such a nature that it is either substantially solid at room temperature or is so viscous at room temperature that neither will emulsify with the other liquid, and when heat is applied to the container, the first substance will become flowable and move about in the other substance.

...The liquid in which the globule is suspended is usually dyed water, but not necessarily so. The other liquid is chosen with very many considerations in mind, including the relative densities of the liquids at the desired operating temperature; the fact that the liquids must be immiscible; the fact that the surface tension must be such that the globule does not adhere to the walls of the container; the relative coefficients of thermal expansion of the liquids; and the shapes that are obtained during operation. A suitable liquid for the globule has been found to comprise mineral oil, paraffin, carbon tetrachloride and a dye or dyes. However, undue shaking or sharp impacts, especially during transport of the display device, can cause total or partial emulsification of the globule."

It's what I tell my Wintel-using friends to use instead of Internet Exploder. Every one of them has thanked me for the info and continues to use it as their browser of choice.

One of the many advantages to this choice would be a unified look of an app between platforms. (that is, if you intend that the family use Linux) The browser would look the same (unless someone decides to skin one of them without doing the other, a likely situation ;)

This is a heartfelt plea...I have dealt with it for over a decade. It never ends. How insecure is the rest of the computing population that they feel compelled to ridicule people who choose to use a Mac -- insulting them at every turn, and then accusing them of being elitist or some other B.S.

I use a Mac because I get my work done -- regardless of what it cost me...and that is my choice -- and a good one that has clothed, fed, and housed me for many years in the past, and (hopefully with a family) many years to come.

Yup, but you're free to put ANY multi-button mouse on there the instant you get it.

Maybe this isn't clear. ANY multi-button mouse, NO DRIVERS, NO CONFIGURATION. Right-click works as it should (control-click), and scroll wheel works by default as well. If you click a middle mouse button on a mac on a web link, it will open in a new tab.

Getting quite sick of explaining this, but evidently feeble-minded trolls like you don't grasp it: One button is better for beginner users, they get less confused, as EVERYTHING you need to access is available through the menu bar, which is CONSISTENTLY at the top of the screen, no matter what program you're in.

Those of us who choose to use the alternative, more "power user" methods of getting around, can. Plug in a multi-button mouse? Works out of the box, no drivers necessary. Apple is happy to provide keyboard shortcuts for the whole OS and let you modify them and make your own. Mouse gestures, voice activation, any number of ways to control the Mac straight out of the box.

BTW, when I said to hold down the mouse button, that wouldn't be confusing to any mac user, as either they have a one-button mouse, or will assume you're talking about the left-click. This is another thing that makes doing tech support for the Mac over the phone easier than for Windows. (cannot be disputed. I've done both Win and Mac help desk duties, and I almost lost it trying to troubleshoot friggin' Dell pieces of crap every day)

...and built-in support for multi-button mice is actually BETTER than for *nix or Windows. Windows only recognizes 2 buttons and the scroll if you're lucky without 3rd party utilities.

So sick of these idiots.. do your own research already.

First, the graphics aren't that great, but they are exactly what you require for visual feedback. Everything is where it (so it seems) should be for quick and easy access. The audio feedback on things like the trace tracker is a nice bonus as well.

Ambrosia Software's port to the Mac is very well done, although it would be nice (as I mentioned on the Ambrosia boards) to be able to switch the game to windowed mode for the ability to check what's going on with the rest of your system during the game.

The thing is, most of my regular (read: non-geek) friends wouldn't get much of a thrill out of it. The lack of eye-candy and blood/boobs/bombs would probably turn them off, regardless of the fact that the game is very exciting to me, very immersive, and a lot of fun. They just wouldn't be able to see the "fun" in learning more and better ways to hack and crack..

The point is that it doesn't have to appeal to the mass-market, the ones that love all the Clear Channel crap that's on the radio, buying Windows boxes because "they're cheap" and watching reality shows until their own perception of reality erodes completely.

It's made for you and I. The ones who find this (all this geek stuff) fun. I think games should be more tailor-made to fit a certain group.. even though I hate the idea of market groups and stereotypes. Please don't let the developers dumb down everything to appease the masses.

This game has me really hooked. It's all done in a very immersive style, and presents itself like no other game on the market. Two green thumbs up.
