  1. Was he hugging the stingray? on Steve Irwin Dead · · Score: 1

Was explaining to my 6-year old that the Crocodile Hunter had passed away, and during my son's normal questioning on how a stingray can kill a man, the natural question was asked - how did the animal sting his heart? Was Steve hugging the stingray or something? Might be one of those unanswered questions ... except maybe the cameras were probably rolling at the time of the accident ...

Lucent did OEM their electronics, but also had a microelectronics division that spun off into Agere (http://www.agere.com./ During the downfall over the past several years, the modem business was one of many that Lucent exited.

  3. Re:Job offer? on ESR Gets Job Offer From Microsoft · · Score: 1

My thoughts exactly ... I first read the /. headline "ESR Gets Job Offer From Microsoft" and was confused on how MSFT would give an offer without an interview! This might be nothing more than someone giving a pointer to the MSFT HR machine ... clearly not /. worthy news :(

  4. ... and the news is? on Water Flowed Recently on Mars · · Score: 1
In July, the Mars Explorer claims to have found water on Mars, i.e.

"Water ice in crater at Martian north pole" @

So, what's the "Stuff that matters" part of an article that says water flowed on the surface? Or, is the Mars Express photo being disputed and we're back to speculation?

And, no - I'm not bitter that all my slashdot submissions have been rejected ... well, maybe a little ...

  5. Re:Google keeps doing it. on New Google Homepage Features · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's amazing how short people's memories are ... just a couple years ago, everyone was saying Microsoft knew exactly what it is doing, and before that it was Yahoo knows exactly what it's doing. The question/challenge for Google is how it will react as a company when the stock price drops and there's no money to fun these free initiatives. It's hard to "do no evil" when you are trying to figure out how to lift employee morale, report profitability and retain competitive advantages.

  6. Re:Illustrates the problem perfectly on Reminding Customers Patented by Amazon · · Score: 1

Well, I guess you can argue that the additional fees each time you re-submit is the "fine". However, your point is well taken ... the only people that can do this dance with the USPO are large corporations like AMZN, IBM, MSFT, etc. One can make a real good arguement that the patent system is seriously hindering innovation and entrepreneurism, as the next Larry Page and Sergey Brin may find out a couple years down the road that they inadvertantly violated one of Bezo's patents

  7. You're right on 7-Year Old Prequel Fan On ANH · · Score: 1

7 years is way too old. My 5 year old loves the movies, although each time I see it again I cringe at the corny dialog and wonder how Lucas pulled it off.
