My question is does this work for everyone? For example if Joe sits down and has his pattern scanned for looking at a dog, and then I sit down and have my pattern scanned while looking at a dog, will they match up? Will the computer be able to tell that I am looking at a dog from Joe's scan without first scanning my own?
I'm guessing it doesn't*, so it would be pretty impressive (to me) if it could.
*based on my absolutely uneducated belief that a picture of a dog will activate neuron connections based on my experiences with dogs. If I was once bit by a big dog then my neuro-pattern would be different than Joe's who wasn't.
Anecdote : A friend of the family was having a garage sale, and stuff was selling okay. Mother-in-law (a garage sale pro) comes through and marks up stuff, $.50 becomes $5.00 etc. Stuff starts selling a lot faster. You charge more, it's "worth" more. If it's too cheap, people wonder what's wrong with it.
[quote]When I can go into any software vendor and find the latest-greatest-game in a linux box, that's when it will be "year of linux on the desktop"(tm) I guarantee it.[/quote]
Minor correction: I realize a few games have been released in a linux box, I was referring to most if not all of them being available as one.
Speaking from why I haven't switched... I guarantee if you could walk into a store and see two copies of a given piece of software one with a [linux] tag, and one with a [windows] tag, people would be a million times more willing to use linux.
When I can go into any software vendor and find the latest-greatest-game in a linux box, that's when it will be "year of linux on the desktop"(tm) I guarantee it.
A lot of you are talking about getting paid for your day jobs / average work for years after you finish.. like artists. The problem with your theory is it's not apples to oranges. The best example would be a movie. Suppose a movie costs $100 million to make. You would need to find a single buyer for $100 million to break even, or else be able to sell it to millions of people for much smaller chunks over periods of time. Now those of you who want to get paid over years for work you did would have to charge per use, and a fraction of the cost.. Let's say 1 penny per use. Not many of you would be happy with that scenario.
So why such angst for artists who can't charge what they need to in order to cover their cost to a single person, but instead choose to charge much much smaller amounts to a thousands of people over a period of years.
(I'm for copyright, but for a realistic length of time.)
The studio's aren't "right". They aren't doing this on moral ground. If they felt so strongly about copyright length they shouldn't make films on anything not in the public domain.
Your comment is good, but your subject, couldn't be more wrong (based on my slashdot degree alone).
I wouldn't be targeting airplanes after let's say September 12th 2001. The whole point was that someone found a weak spot and exploited it. One that has now been closed or at least monitored a lot more. I'm fairly sure their focus isn't on hijacking airplanes anymore, but looking for the next weak spot. If they aren't it makes me doubt their intelligence and ability to mastermind September 11th to begin with.
I'm not suggesting abandoning _all_ the new security. But the whole procedures on liquid explosives is pretty pointless, when airplanes are unlikely to be the next target anyway.
Everyone's ignoring the actual story, which was pretty sad. No commentary on "why" they were memorable, most of which weren't. I'd say most were mediocre at best. Seems like this "story" if you want to call it that was made just to drive traffic. Why was this front paged?
Prices are indeed on the rise. A few patches ago they introduced "daily quests" quests which are repeatable once per day. Most pay 10-20 gold per. Each character is allowed to complete 10 per day, meaning 1-200 gold per day per character. This is a huge increase of overall money added to the game, without a lot of money sinks added. The only big one being epic flying mount (5000g) but as a one time thing it doesn't amount to much. Add to it, the epic flying mount earns you even more money at a faster rate.
The only real place your money goes is to other players for items. Farmed / crafted / services. So actual players continue to get richer.
All this leads to the average price of an item for sale going up in price. On average prices for pre-expansion items have increased 50%. Post-expansion items 25-50% increase.
What possible prediction can anyone make from Creationism? While a species or "kind" will adapt for survival, it will only be able to reproduce within itself. - For example a cat and dog cannot breed to produce offspring. Some species which are close can produce offspring, but the offspring is essentially sterile. E.g. A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse; The mule, however, is sterile for all intents and purposes. "Since 1527 there have been more than 60 documented cases of [fertile] female mules around the world. It must be noted that there are no recorded cases of fertile mule stallions." - wikipedia
Genesis 1:11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. 24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
The fossil record will match the genesis order of creation. - For example there would be no record of land animals before birds or sea creatures.
Odd.. I always thought the bible taught the earth was round...
Isaiah 40:22 (KJV) It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.
Isaiah 40:22 (MSG) God sits high above the round ball of earth. The people look like mere ants. He stretches out the skies like a canvas- yes, like a tent canvas to live under.
Isaiah 40:22 (DRV) It is he that sitteth upon the globe of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as locusts: he that stretcheth out the heavens as nothing, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.
I'm not so sure it'd be good for gaming. Several years ago we had a lan party where someone had wall projector for a monitor. We all tried to play counter-strike and most of us were pretty horrible on it. We found it far easier to play on a normal monitor and let everyone else just watch for fun on the projector. The problem was there was too much screen to scan quickly with your eyes. We'd even miss enemies we'd normally see on the smaller screen.
If you had two of these with dual monitor support, could you have a full 180degree view?
I've read slashdot for a long time. And the one thing that irritates me the most is the hatred everyone has towards religion and god. Post after post moderated to +5 insightful for saying "it's stupid to believe in god". What happened to open-minded?
The bible actually agrees with science on a fair number of things. Here's a couple quick examples:
Big Bang - e=mc2 basically a lot of energy can create matter. God is stated repeatedly of having abundant power or energy. Now imagine the beginning of time, empty universe or what have you and God begins creation. He puts his finger to the empty 'canvas' and pours out his energy, and matter 'explodes' from his fingertips outward. (I'm not aware of) anything in the bible that contradicts this. But it would easily explain how science sees the big bang, and how God could've created it. There are also many verses talking about God 'spreading out the heavens', seems fitting for an expanding universe.
Dinosaurs - Everyone loves saying the bible is wrong on the creation account due to the lack of dinosaurs in the bible. All writers were inspired by Holy Spirit (according to the bible). Most people have had in their lives a moment where everything makes perfect sense. They can think about anything at all, and everything about it is absolutely crystal clear. You can think about war, the past, even sex. Whatever, doesn't matter, it just makes sense. I (personally) believe this is how holy spirit works. However, there is a limitation. If you don't think about it, it won't become clear. This means that Moses while writing about the history of creation, would only write down what species were known about during his life. He would not have known about dinosaurs to place them on the timeline in creation.
There's more but I can't think of them atm.. So I'll close with an anecdote:
A few years ago I was into drugs and alcohol, I became depressed and not happy with life. Since I grew up religious my solution was to pray about it, that very day I was watching people download some songs from my computer (napster days). I messaged one to tell the user I had a few more albums of the same band they might want. The way he spoke made me wonder where they were from. He said Germany. About this time the Iraq war protests were going on. So I asked what he thought about the war. His response was basically "I believe god will make things better soon." I recognized the answer growing up as a Jehovah's Witness myself. So I asked what religion he was.
He told me he was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. I told him how I was raised as one also, and we chatted for quite sometime. The significance was that if my parents were to ask me about faith, I would've thought nothing of it. But the chances of this person across the globe I've never met seemingly respond to my prayer made me take note. Soon after that time he told me he was going on vacation. During the three months that followed, I returned to my drugs and alcohol and soon became depressed again, never doing anything with religion. Once again I prayed. That very same day I received an email from this same person in Germany saying nothing more than "Well? How's your faith?"
Two prayers three months apart. Two answers on the same exact day of the prayers. It was a coincidence I couldn't ignore. This is the basis of my faith. Something I can't just dismiss because it's "stupid to believe in god" or "religion is to keep the masses under control". Stop assuming that people are religious because they are stupid, or gullible. Perhaps theirs more to their faith then you know about. I consider my logic to be one of my strongest characteristics. And based on the events in my life, belief in God is the only logical choice.
What's to stop the agent from rejecting all patents (troll and legit) for fear of a fine? Obviously it'd be better to reward agents with bonuses or something for keeping a high rate of quality.
You have a point, to a degree.
The Beatles were pop, same as Britney Spears is pop. Don't hate pop music just "because", there is quality in the genre.

Wouldn't people be safer in the first one, knowing they can't trust anyone than in the second with a false sense of security?
Knowing you can't trust people keeps you prepared. It's when you trust people on the net / websites that you risk losing what you give them.
I still want the USB version.. direct link to my brain.
Spot on.

It's only slow because it's hosted in Iran.
Exactly, for the moment the mistake costs them zero. Horrible headline.

This is to keep church members from seeing 56 inch nipples.
I was thinking of joining a fantasy stock exchange game, but this looks a lot more fun.
Sign me up!
True, and how many people on here still think Win2k is the superior OS?
No problem, just tell them you're dead. I'm sure you have hundreds if not thousands of death certificates at your disposal.
