I wouldn't be so quick to to make the blanket statement that parting out cars will always make more than recycling for the basic metals. I would say it has to do with endemic English ignorance in the (other country's) legal system. In the US and other primarily English speaking countries Windows is a generic term, but that is not the case in countries with different languages is it? Lindows won the case in the US.

I don't get cable any more, but half the fun is monitoring culture. There is some pretty crazy shit going on out there. Is getting a bunch of random channels for one price really such a bad thing? What happens if this is mandated but nobody buys it, are they allowed to drop it?

All the GPL says is that you must provide the source (when you use other peoples code), if that makes it impossible to make a profit you are just unimaginative. Redhat and IBM are not in it for the karma.
