Thank you. I can talk about the lack of a decent desktop environment in windows, or how linux provides me a choice of tools, among other things. But at the end of the day, the Corporate feel of windows and the apps that run on it, just suck the fun right out. Windows is boring, dull as dirt, and uninteresting. Doing work there never gets exciting, nothing new really happens. Thanks for mentioning it.
This is a good explanation, even though I did know what Diaspora was. I usually prefer the privacy angle, but your definition really applies to a broad number of potential users.
I forgot to mention something important. Probably what you are thinking of is the mass produced crap beers, mostly attributed to America. However, they aren't American. Coors is Canadian, Miller is UK, Bud is Belgian/Brazilian and so on.
True American beers are small operations, and they are the ones that count. Washington, Oregon, California, Colorado have the best beer in the world, bar none.
Sigh. So that brew pub down the street from me that makes beer with fresh organic ingredients, works with the local farmers during purchase only 60 miles away, and serves on tap at all the local pubs is lower then any where in the world? Not to mention the other 100 or so breweries doing the same thing within 60 miles of that one? Sorry pal, I been around the world, and this is the best beer you can get, particularly in terms of quality.
FALSE. I have been around the world. The US, particularly Portland, Washington, California, and Colorado, beat the rest of the world by miles for beer. You are simply wrong.
I recently played through Half Life 1. What fun! I introduced my son to it, he loved it too. Then he went to half life 2. He quit in about half an hour. We have talked about it, and while he is used to hi-res graphics and neat scenery, Half Life one, just the way it is, had atmosphere that just doesnt need an upgrade.
Sure I will play the mod, but I just dont think it will improve on Half Life one at all, in fact, I think it will detract from it.
Funny thiing is that I may spend most of my time in an application (or two or three) but when the OS is lacking a decent file manager, a decent clipboard, a robust yet simple recovery system, and nags me every day for updates that require reboot, I DO care about the OS. Productivity goes way down no matter how good the application is if the environment I am working in is poor.
20 behind? Windows 7 as a desktop is a complete farce once you are used to the deep integration of a Linux desktop, never mind the configurability. No Gnome, No Unity? So what? There are much better alternatives out there, and you can choose them if you wish.
I agree. I cant fathom how someone who reads slashdot couldnt follow those simple instructions. All our computers are linux and minecraft was super simple. My seven year old set it up himself.
The chances are about equal. Windows still doesnt understand my usb devices correctly, the video driver to install properly must be manual, the laptop I have does not have the ability to use the wireless card with WPA in windows (but does in linux), and I have some older devices that will not work in windows seven.
So as far as the experiences I have had, Linux wins hands down on being easier (nothing to do it just works) and supporting more hardware and devices. Oh and I dont have to sit and babysit windows for the 20 minutes while it updates.
Furthur, Linux desktop is miles ahead of windows in terms of functionality. Heres two examples: Windows doesnt have a decent clipboard, nor multiple or configurable workspaces. Thats just 2 out of a thousand things linux does better on the desktop.
Share your data with an accountant. If I have quick books, what heck does my accountant actually do then? Accountants are such a scam. As a small business owner who hates quickbooks, I found some one to do my accounting that did not require me to do any additional work, you know, like accounting.
They are not nice. Its better for thier image to vacciniate everyone. They dont want viruses running rampant.
Moreover, piracy is part of the Microsoft Strategy. From fortune magazine on MS software in China:
Gates argued that if they were going to pirate anybody's software he'd certainly prefer it be Microsoft's.
Today Gates openly concedes that tolerating piracy turned out to be Microsoft's best long-term strategy. That's why Windows is used on an estimated 90% of China's 120 million PCs.
Indeed, in China's back alleys, Linux often costs more than Windows because it requires more disks. And Microsoft's own prices have dropped so low it now sells a $3 package of Windows and Office to students.
There you go again. Complete bulshit. I dont know how many times I have had to rely on LibreOffice to deal with the shortcomings of Excel. YOUR workflow and YOUR work may not fit into Calc, but that doesnt mean someone elses doesnt. I think I could save a minute per hour by simply not using excel due to the bloat. For my workflow, excel does not integrate into word well enough. I also cant write (well technically I can, but I find it a pain) scripts that update the spreadsheets with out opening them. The column formatting is poor in excel, the worksheet management sucks. Calc hasintegration with external math tools like R and Numpy that just blow excel away. Excel and Word are cute tools that work for somne people, but I dont find them ready for real work.
To each their own, but dont make statements that are complete bullshit.
Bullshit. I made a living writing documents too, and Microsoft was not the one with good quality tools. Libre office was far better suited for large documents (3,000 or so pages), did better formatting, and had better integration with spreadsheets. YOU may want to spend money on MS Office, but that doesnt mean it is any more of a "quality" tool then the free options.
I think you saw some of the answers already in the posts above yours: A steam console in the works, independent of OS. A get in early on the inevitable uptake of linux in embedded devices and home desktops The humble bundles have indicated that Linux users want games, and are willing to pay for them on thier platform of choice. 75,000 (roughly) people bought the last Linux humble bundle, getting your platform which delivers ads daily, in front of those users too?
With the most popular game TF2, and it being free, I would think they would have wanted that one out the door first. Then DOTA2 as the next most popular. TF2 brings in the numbers, new people can get in at no cost. Left 4 dead is a bit Niche (and a bit has been at this point). Either way, get some more games involved and I will no longer need to boot into windows, and that makes me very very happy. I would rather dual boot Linux/LinuxGaming if I want to keep a pure open environment.
Interesting. Crowd vs Commercial mapping. The difference is the commercial vendor is trying to get multiple data inputs (LIDAR and 360) to quickly gather enough information that one process or person can make maps. With neighborhood mapping, you can get multiple inputs, from interested parties with a single map input, and over a longer time.
The difference is that these are games. Idle pass-times. Nothing important or personal.

And just to mention, I care for neither Windows or Mac.

Yes. Yes it is that easy.

Ah but continue the train of thought: The landlord would not come by ever again to do any upkeep, pay property taxes, or maintain the grounds.
Or QMMP is using linux. And you can skin it with WinAmp skins.

I remember during the early days of XP, Microsoft reps sending me to a site to get a patch to turn them into corporate install.s

Oh sure there is. I saw a QT mapping demo at Linuxfest and again at a GIS workshop. I believe I met someone who works here: http://spatialminds.com/.

Go ahead and go over to the valve linux blog and email them from there. They really seem interested in getting input.

The mail address is in the text and on the sidebar on the right.
