My PREVIOUS car got 35MPG on the highway and had plenty of power. They don't make cars like that anymore..

Congress, with all its lip-service about ending our dependence on foreign oil, THIS YEAR, voted DOWN a bill requiring car companies to adhere to higher mileage standards.

Bzzt. The "powers that be" will never let us have that. The "powers that be" want to make sure you're always dependent upon them to get around. They also want to make sure that you pay them for the privilege. Same goes for keeping warm in the winter.

I have just gotten back into bicycling with my new recumbent bike and find that if the current energy crunch (read as, "robber barons ripping everyone off because they can") gets too much worse I can always start riding a bike within town to actually get places (instead of just riding). It's liberating, actually.

  19. Where the money is... on Commercializing Open Source Software · · Score: 2, Interesting

The money is in integrating the things and making it work for people.

The other money is in CUSTOMIZING. People have a demand for stuff that works only for their situation, and demands an in-person presence that indians (in india, that is) cannot satisfy.

There's not a huge profit margin in selling commercial packages anyway, but about the same amount of time is spent making them work. SELL YOUR TIME!

(Don't buy the commercial vendors "TCO" arguments..)

Most of my clients are all too happy to get away from "license" payments. They want to spend money for actual value, and a "license" isn't an actual value, other than for the "privilege" of running a software package.
