It's this exact attitude by employers that caused me to start my own business. I have worked for people who had respect for me, and I've worked for people who are like this Anonymous Coward who posted this troll.
"Your value to the company must exceed your cumulative cost, and by a large factor. Otherwise you are expendable. Bitch, and that adds to the cumulative cost. Bitch some more and you are gone. No questions asked."
If you want slaves instead of employees, leave the country, now, please. We don't want you here.
The company I recently told to get bent used to respect their employees. They switched to an attitude like yours, and they've been losing clients ever since.
I've seen these letter before from clients. If they do not specifically charge you with piracy, stealing or whatever, throw it out and don't bother downloading their spyware.
You have the same rights you always had. They have to have probable cause to get a warrant, and they have to have a warrant before they can come into your office forcibly. A warrantless vampire cannot come in unless you invite them in.
IANAL, but I believe that as long as you have practiced due diligence and can show that you took reasonable steps to not break the law, then no judge with an actual brain would rule against you.
That being said, the BSA is looking for those who buy one copy and load it all across the office. I know of a company that did that, got ratted on by a disgruntled employee. Bottom line: they paid big. These are the fish they want to fry, and there are plenty of them out there.
Now, if you've been pirating software, and get a letter, and throw it out, and they still come after you, you won't get any sympathy from me!
Yeah, lots of people plain don't give a rat's butt about that PC with Palladium on it. However, of those of us that run other platforms, the vast majority do their homework first and don't buy those. Also, corporations usually go to their IT department for advice on what to buy, and those folks do their homework too. If they're an all Microsoft shop, who cares? If not, they'll do homework and NOT buy these fried chipsets. I hate to sound like a republican, but the market will likely drive this to make it not worth their effort.
Hey.. I like the AMD processors. They're cheap and fast. Why would I want to spend $100 more for an intel and $500 more for a Mac when Linux is going to either work around or ignore the palladium and drm? Do you think AMD and Intel are going to be stupid enough to put out processors that refuse to boot if windows is not the OS? There'll be a bigger backlash than the F00F or FDIV bugs.
If the industry made a system board that could boot nothing but windows or "trusted" boot sectors, the outrage would be very very loud. I don't think any system board manufacturer wants to take that risk, especially with lots of corporations now using Linux and BSD in the server room and on the desktop.
Before linux can EVER make it onto the desktop, somebody is going to have to come up with some type of scripting language besides C. I need the ability to interact with the inputs/outputs of the office productivity tools (delete, copy, etc) and linux just can't do that yet.
- C is not a "scripting" language. - Linux has many more scripting lanugages than Windows does. Perl, Python, Tcl/Tk (for a VB like interface check out vtcl), Bash, PHP (mostly for web but cmd line works too), and on and on. And all of it comes FREE on the distro! With Windows you gotta BUY something lame like VB. - OpenOffice.org is the up and coming thing. It rocks. It's on of the few things Sun did "right." IIRC they have a scripting language in it.
In your book, you talk about inaccuracies that were disseminated to the public, the courts, etc. about you. Specifically, what were they and what is your side of that story?
DON'T do this. Working for free worked for this guy, but it won't for the vast majority of people. Your best bet if you can't get a job is to do freelancing or start a company. It costs all of about 100 bucks with your secretary of state if you want to incorporate. You'll have to learn some tax laws, but big whoop. My corporation is 9 months old today and it's paying the bills. No headhunters have called me since 2001, and the job market here in Cincinnati is worse than that, it's dead, Jim, dead, Jim, dead, Jim. It's worse than that, it's dead, Jim, dead, Jim, dead!
depends.. is the GET http://www.example.com/3458976394534/admin.html encrypted when going over the wire? If not, then it's LESS secure than a password. Usually the password would be encrypted in some fashion. If not, then they're equal.
Absolutely right! The company I used to work for was very loyal to their employees until they got bought out. As soon as they got bought out, new "management" adopted a "cheap employees are best" attitude and now they're losing customers.
You know.. I got invited to four parties and decided to stay home. The WX is nasty and damn I just don't feel like mingling. Geeky? Yeah. Do I give a rat's? Naah.
Some people live in a town where only one choice is offered and cannot choose a responsible ISP or they must resort to something as horrible as dial-up. (i.e. a MONOPOLY)
I thought the FCC and the gummint didn't want all them monopolies! Oh wait.. the lobbyists all got what they paid for. Never mind.
Cliff Stool..er.. Stoll has a book out that's not that bad, called High Tech Heretic that I have checked out from my local free-beer-as-long-as-you-bring-it-back book repository. His book The Cuckoo's Egg was his best though, and I don't think he can top that one.
This article popped up and my first thought was, "Well DUH!"
Quit. Seriously. If they don't appreciate you, find someone who does. Life is way too bloody short to work for someone who does not appreciate you. Believe me, I've done it.
My very first boss appreciated me, only paid me $6.00 per hour, but thanked me every day. I appreciated working for him. I think of him as my teacher. He passed away after about two years.
My second boss and third boss did not appreciate me. My fourth "boss" (a medium-large corporation) appreciated me about as much as a corporation could, so they were ok, thinking back on it.
My fifth boss(es) appreciated me, but the company was bought out by people who did not appreciate me. I left there too.
Believe me, it's not worth working for those who don't appreciate you, period. So find someone who does and quit. People are a corporation's number one asset. A company that treats its people poorly is a company that is not making half the money it could. Happy workers attitudes flow through to the customer who are then happy to do business with the company.

On the contrary. Adult-to-adult human-only porn is the only porn that that can approach being benign, and that is only if all parties are actually willing.
When animals and children get involved, then it is no longer victimless.
I remember going into a popular electronics type store about eight or so years ago and marvelling at the Sony stuff (and other brands) and how they seemed to be whooping up on everyone else's butts on both the price and quality. Comparable stuff just seemed to cost way more.
I went to a Best Buy a couple of weeks ago, and checked out the stereos. ALL JUNK! EVERY LAST BIT OF IT!
As a result, I still have my old ZENITH MC6060 (circa late 70s) and although the cassette deck in it is fried, the amplifier still sound good enough for me!!
You know.. that's a real email address!!!

1: Go to the web site, and find what you want.
2: Call and order by phone. It's now not an online transaction.
(doesn't work for ebay, amazon, etc.. but works fine for parts distributors, system houses, etc.)

Bill Gates is an obnoxious uncompromising twit with a good idea.

I'll bite on this troll.
You don't sell software.. You sell the development services and write custom coding to fit a business.
Holy cow! Am I reading this right?

Someone mod geekee down.. Price fixing is illegal, period.
Yeah, let's screw people over. After all, it's business.
I'll go start me up an insurance company so I can rip off little old ladies and make them pay out the ass for their medicine.
Business is not a legitimate excuse for humans screwing each other over.

They want source, you want to protect it. This is a legal question, not a technical one.
Copyright it, file it at the Library of Congress, and get the client to sign a contract that says you own the code, and they license it.
If you GPL it, you can't switch to proprietary, but if you keep it proprietary for now, you can GPL it later.
