UPS/Fedex delivering to every single mailbox in the country for less than 50 cents? The MPAA will be delivering movies over the internet before that can happen!
labor arbitrage is not why they are doing it, you can be damn sure that's the primary reason they are doing it.
I am not sure many people realy believe the hype about a lack of availability of skilled labor in the US (and now maybe even Europe).
will always exploit the weakest link in the chain. MasterCard itself might have the best security but what about all the systems downstream? Wonder how many more of these transactions processors have been compromised and don't even know it yet.
why PC "penetration" is really low in India is because a majority of the population has to fight hard every day to *eat*.
The reality is quite different from that created due to the "outsourcing mecca" image. IT and related services employ only about 6 million Indians (out of a 1.1 billion total). IT related products/services are only about 1.5% of the Indian GDP.
It is going to be a long time for the PC to become a part of the average Indian's life.
Microsoft has multiple revenue streams. Google, at this point, has only one.I think MS is doing the right thing by trying to attack Google before they come close to any of their core product lines. While it may seem that Google is encroaching on MS territory, it is far from true.
I hope Google expands into areas that generate revenue while competing directly against MS - that will put pressure on MS and hopefully bring down cost and maybe even improve quality.
than privoxy chained with squid with prefetch?
Looks to me like there are a number of privacy issues with this. Not an even trade for the "boost". Google gains a lot more than you do.
While the product is innovative and interesting, the comparison (cost-wise) with other "portable" structures is not correct. This looks to be (from the article) a non-portable semi-permanent structure.
to create "free" BIOS help Intel? Would gain market share? Would it somehow end up with a new revenue stream that it cannot access with its current marketing and other strategies? What can it gain by winning over a bunch of geeks?
This is not flame bait. I am just trying to understand why corporations like Intel would cooperate.
someone comes up with a phony reader? No longer will people have to steal cards to make fraudulent charges! Just make you walk by a reader and voila! you have a $25 charge on your card.....
half. HP + Compaq = company that lost market share in nearly every segment they had a (combined) presence in!
Fiona was probably one of the (many) CEOs who have forgotten basic math. I blame not her , but the stupidity, gullibity and greed of the Board of Directors and the shareholders.
a good idea to include some info about who the heck this guy is? I had to do a search. May I suggest that the editors/posters re-read their submission instructions?
In related news, Wilbert Rideau has been released.
AOL is in a serious crunch - they were losing the low cost ($9.95 and below) dialup business (so they got into it - don't they own both Netscape and peoplepc?). Their ad revenue is falling so they get into the free email business - make sense (sorta).
Their foray into broadband failed. They are just grasping at straws at this point, I think.
how come there is never a list of the 10 worst cars? Never saw an article in Car and Driver saying don't buy this - it sucks. Cars are far more expensive and more dangerous! and they probably sell more cars than digital cameras or camcorders in this country anyway.
wherever you go - malls, stores, gas stations you are being continually monitored and recorded. you have no idea how long they keep your face on file.
what's all the cribbing about? get over it - the US is probably the only place wherever people talk the most about privacy and end up having the least!
5 years ago a PHB where I was working decided that we had to go object oriented and in all his wisdom decided that re-compiling the existing code with a c++ compiler would do the job.
possibly the worst 2 week assignement i ever got.
the manufacturers will keep adding features to keep increasing profits. the more confused the consumers are, the better they are off in terms of being able to decrease consumer surplus. willingness to pay on part of consumers is proportional to their understanding of the product and/or a reference price they can set in their heads.
consumers should demand simpler products... that's the only way products are going to get simpler and more reliable.

it is already on every PC out there.

All I can say is stop whining and move on.

maybe we should start looking for silicon based life forms (wasn't this mentioned in some Isaac Asimov story?).
right....we were winning till 9/11. we lost on that day and then we are winning again!
