I've never actually used Outlook because I never needed it before. I use Evolution now because I need a PIM. Can you tell me what is so inferior about Evolution compared to Outlook?
I find it odd that so many experienced Linux people find dual-booting on the same drive Linux to be "risky". With System Commander and its partition program, or even with Disk Druid during the FC3 install process, it is a snap to do it and I've never had an issue.
Very true. I've found the same is true of Suse. It practically invites you to dual boot. The only time I ever installed a dual boot system was with Suse and it installed fine and even made a grub menu option for me. All I had to do was install Windows on it's own partition and then install Suse. Funny thing was that Suse detected all my hardware without a hitch. XP needed SATA drivers off a floppy and wouldn't even load the install CD with the video card that I was using. I had to grab a spare and install it that way.
That depends on your point of view. Extremely rightwing nutcases like yourself would view Slashdot as extremely left but normal people would say Slashdot leans left. I'll tell you this much, If Slashdot is way way way left, then liberalism is in bad shape.
Microsoft would have to put A LOT of money behind AMD. Right now AMD definitely does not have the production capacity to be the sole provider for Microsoft. I'm not defending the idea that Intel and Apple will merge, because I don't think it will happen but if it did happen Intel could sell chips to Microsoft and still sell Apple software with their hardware. Maybe Microsoft will switch to PPC and start buying from IBM. That seems like the only other supplier that could produce enough chips to satisfy Microsoft's needs. Now that would be ironic.
Case in point,in this forum my right to free speech and redress of grievances has been stifled for political dissent.
This is Slashdot! Do you actually believe your "right too free speech and redress of grievances" have been stifled for "political dissent"? If Slashdot really affects your life that much then you need to get out more. Besides, Slashdot seems to lean left so what were you expecting? If most of us hung out at with freepers we would be tormented, and it would be expected.
Sometimes you have to sit back and realize this is a forum, not the government, not work, and not your next door neighbor. Get a grip.
Well there never was a version 2.50.1 but that's besides the point. There were some performance enhancing features put into kernels later than 2.5, like the ability to switch I/O schedulers. I'm not sure how much that would affect some of the benchmarks but that is just one example.
Right now? Do you mean the internet a dispersed segmented network with no central point of failure developed by DARPA? DARPA=Defense Advanced Research Project Agency sounds like a military technology but maybe I misunderstand the word Defense and the.mil extension is always a question if it really is Military;p
I'm not sure if this even made sense. If you are disputing the fact that the internet was a military project then you're wrong. If you're not then disregard this comment.
As far as the past three years you have got to be kidding. You may not agree with why we went in but if anything we are very far and supportive for religious and political differences. Hell you were allowed to post a comment like this I guess in China they would have taken you and locked you a way for a few years.
You must be living under a rock if you don't know that the US has been implementing and quitely supporinting torture. Do the countries Cuba, Iraq, and Syria ring a bell? Of course the US government didn't cut people's heads off on TV so that makes them immune to criticism in some people's eyes.
First of all it's sempron not semptron. Secondly how the hell do you think that a sempron is slow? Semprons are either AthlonXP chips with reduced cache or Athlon64 (socket 754) chips with reduced cache. Socket 754 Athlon64s are still fast as hell. The lack of dual-channel doesn't even make that much of a difference becuase of the HyperTransport. I gaurantee a Socket 754 Sempron would trounce a similar celeron. As far as 64-bit Semprons, I'm pretty sure they don't even exist.
You're comparing me to a creationist? I think you have it backwards. I wasn't willing to accept the draft as a possibility either until recently. You still haven't answered the questions I posed and that only leads me to believe my position is even more correct than before.
I repeat, where do you think all the troops that we need will come from? It's really simple mathematics when you look at it. Either we draft or we pull out unfinished. Those are the only two options at this point, unless we miraculously clean this mess up in under a year.
I suppose our institutionalized murder of innocent civilians in Iraq is morally superior to the decentralized murder of suicide bombers. Is that what you are getting at?
Everyone at the Pentagon has repeatedly said that they neither need nor want a draft.
Give me a break. We all know that you can't trust anything the government has to say about a draft. Besides, at this rate how do you suspect we will retain our troop levels with declines in recruiting and an already stretched thin military? We won't be out of there for at least another 5 years if we can last that long. For crying out loud soldiers have been suing the government for their stop-loss, backdoor draft bullshit.
We are not (yet) banning political parties or executing journalists
The Republican party did ban many Democrats from Bush's campaign speeches. There were also several questionable "friendly" fire incidents involving American troops in Iraq that killed innocent journalists.
Firefox tabs in particular are bad because you are locked the Z Order based on how you opened them and have no control over how or where they appear.
This is easily fixed with extensions. Try LastTab, MiniT, Single Window, and undoclosetab. Those extenstions give you a lot more control over your tabs in Firefox.
You took the quote out of context and then misused it. Corporate use of Linux on the desktop is only the beginning of Linux on the desktop in general. Corporate usage didn't really take hold until maybe 2 years ago tops, so I don't know who would have been saying that 7 years ago. No one that I know. Maybe in your rush to make that oft repeated remark you missed the fact that I never claimed Linux would take over the world or would wipe out Microsoft, only that corporate usage is only the beginning of desktop linux. things have progressed greatly since 1998 and i'm sure they will even doubly so in the next seven years. Maybe by then Microsoft's Longhorn will actually be released and ready to compete with Linux!;)
I'm also involved in a few OSS projects, and follow several others closely, not that that would make any difference in your eyes (since it would seem you've already passed judgement on me as a "Windows only, never used Linux or BSD apologist".
If that's true, more power to you, but it seems I see that exact comment repeated over and over again without any real reasons to back it up. It seems that Windows users tend to hate Linux but don't have a problem with BSD and I think it has more to do with competition than license since it seems most Windows users don't even understand the licences.
As far as not supporting 3rd party/proprietary drivers, this is one of the things that will always keep linux from reaching critical mass, in regards to desktop users.
That's an opinion, and an incorrect one in my opinion. The popularity and corporate backing of Linux will force a lot of hardware manufacturers to release their specs or release their code.
Yes, windows has its' flaws (mainly in the politics within Microsoft), but so does Linux.. the difference between you and I, is I can point out and accept them in either case.
How ever did you get that idea? Did you just make it up? I never said Linux was flawless. You have quite the imagination.
By default the OS will keep itself updated, checking for updates and installing them, or prompting you to install them.
Not only can this be done on Linux, it has been done.
To reinstall it's put the restore CD in the drive and boot. Normally that will load up the correct 3rd party drivers as the PC manufacturer has put those into the restore process.
That shouldn't be too hard for a PC manufacturer to do with a Linux distro.
I guess my point is that Windows is just as difficult as Linux for the computer illiterate and if Linux came preinstalled most people wouldn't be any worse off when trying to maintain their systems. The biggest issue for the computer illiterate would be trying to figure out how to get their $10 no-name webcam working only to find out it isn't supported, kinda like owning a mac I suppose, except they make their own rediculously priced peripherals.
Firefox is making minimal dents in IE and Linux has made no dent in Windows to speak up
Are you on crack? Firefox is continually gaining ground on IE and Linux has sure as hell made a dent in Windows. What OS do you think those webservers/fileservers/print servers would be using if they weren't using Linux? The desktop is a different story, but corporations have already taken notice of Linux on the desktop and they are being deployed around the world as we speak. Linux on the corporate desktop has been a relatively recent development and it will take time to incubate. This is only the begining of Linux of the desktop.
Take your pick:
Arrangements with schools to get kids hooked on M$ applications
I think Apple has that covered better than MS and it doesn't seem to help them any. Apple definitely competes better in the schools than they do elsewhere.
De-facto standard desktop OS
I'll give you that. Microsoft is famous for leveraging their monopoly on the desktop in other markets, hence all the lawsuits. I'm not so sure this is going to work as well now that the legal battles are intensifying.
Games, games, games
Do you mean the xbox or PC? The xbox has enough competitors to keep them from dominating the console arena. If you mean PC's well then I don't think you realize that 95% of the people who use Windows don't play games except for maybe solitaire and minesweeper of which there are many clones on other operating systems. PC games will have no affect on Microsoft's ability to maintain and/or grow their business.
Not that I wouldn't mind seeing something better come along, but right now, Microsoft works best for most people, and I don't see that changing particularly soon.
I wouldn't say Microsoft works best for most people. Most people have just never tried the alternatives.
I'd love to see Linux prosper as a desktop OS, but sadly developers are not getting adequate cooperation from hardware manufacturers.
I thought this was 2005 not 1995? Sure there are some hardware manufacturers that are not cooperating as the OSS community would like but their is more than enough support to drive OSS forward and that in turn will garner more cooperation from hardware manufacturers. This has been happening for years now. There are some notable exceptions but this will change.
With that said, this will not be an easy battle for Microsoft's competitors. They are not going to just sit still and watch their company go down. They'll fight in the market and they'll fight in the courtroom. The future is going to be just as tough for competitors.
I've never actually used Outlook because I never needed it before. I use Evolution now because I need a PIM. Can you tell me what is so inferior about Evolution compared to Outlook?
Have you tried evolution? It has email, calender, contacts, and a to-do list in one program. It's actually very nice. I use it everyday.
Very true. I've found the same is true of Suse. It practically invites you to dual boot. Another good one is Dogfish Head Ale. Try the 90 minute IPA. It's excellent and it's something like 8-9%.

Sam Adams is damn good beer.

Is that a joke? Adjectives don't have a past tense.
I'm not sure if this even made sense. If you are disputing the fact that the internet was a military project then you're wrong. If you're not then disregard this comment.

Did you forget that AMD still sells relatively inexpensive single-core chips?
