Basically you are advocating that we all sit up and shut up because we have nothing to fear if we have done nothing wrong. This kind of thinking has been proven dangerous time and time again (think nazi's and the stasi). The fact is that people should not be harassed and/or spied on because of something they may do. I can kill a person with a baseball bat but that doesn't it should be illegal to own one. The same thing goes for privacy. Even if I'm not breaking the law I don't want people watching me. No one does. The more control you take away from people and give to government, the harder it is to get any of it back. You just lose more until it's too late to even fight back. Even so, we cannot use our theories of science to prove or disprove this because our theories could very well be a part of a closed, and limited system.

Techinically this is philisophic skepticism. For every possible answer to the question, we can introduce doubt. There is no proof when you discuss things of this sort on this level. The argument is already over; there is no answer.

Actually you can update programs while you are using them with Gentoo so you wouldn't actually lose any of that time, except maybe to bring a service down then back up again. So it is indeed in Novell's business interest to ensure that:

    1) Linux is not encumbered with IP issues
    2) The reputation of Linux is not tarnished

Novell has a lot riding on this.

I don't think you understood his post. You are agreeing with him. He's saying that the propietary code that was "stolen" could be GPL'd because it would not hurt them to do it. If Novell is in fact moving to Linux then it would not hurt them to release the code under an open source license.

Mandrake + KDE = easier, prettier, and shinier than anything Microsoft could ever come up with. URPMI to get anything you need right off the net. It is simply not any easier than that. The sad fact is that just being different in itself is enough to scare most people but it's not because MS is any easier or better, just more familiar. It's time to stop propogating myths about the useability of Linux.

For example just the other day on slashdot someone complained that they don't want to teach their grandmother how to compile a kernel just so she could use email. I was simply amazed. I think if these people would just take a step back, actually try linux, and keep an open mind they might like it.

Clinton and Gore did all that they could to keep the party going till the election, knowing full well they were making the inevitable recovery a long, hard one.

I wish you would stick to the subject. I never said Gore would be better. Whatever I believe on that subject is irrelevant. My claim is that he is the worst president we have ever had. Now to qualify that I should say that he is the worst in my lifetime because I cannot fairly judge the others.

Taliban no longer in control in Afghanistan, with no Al-Queda training camps operating there. A bunch of dead or imprisoned terrorists. US troops moving out of Saudi (you know, the main thing that made Osama and other Saudis go bug-nutty?). And while it's unlikely that Iraq will turn into Shangri-La, it's pretty unlikely it'll become worse than it was.

I don't understand how anyone can view the war in Afganistan as a success. Yes we won the war and that's it. What is being done now? You don't hear about it because it's not good news. Afganistan is now once again the leading producer of heroin. Fights amongst different tribes are occurring more frequently by the day.

The only reason we are pulling out of Saudi Arabia is because we are installing three military bases in Iraq. We don't need bases in Saudia Arabia anymore. How does that help calm Bin Laden? We still have military presence in Islam and that is the issue.

A lot more Iraqis died from ten years of sanctions than from a month of war. Bush got permission to use force from Congress. When Clinton was lobbing cruise missiles at Afghanistan and Sudan, was that authorized by Congress?

It's easy to get congress' approval when it is held by Republicans. Clinton didn't have the luxury for most of his presidency to have his party in control of congress. I also have never stated my approval of sanctions so you have no point really.
