    I use IMAP over a PLINK (PuTTY) tunnel. Works great for me. I have my Thunderbird Icon linked to a batch file that fires the tunnel up, then launches Thunderbird. I login to "localhost" instead of my mail server, but all else (IMAP folders, filters, rules, drag-n-drop) works like a champ.

    My setup:
    • Win2k Sp4
    • Thunderbird 0.5 (upgrading shortly!)
    • PuTTY 0.54

    Using the Recovery console to disable a service simply sets the Registry 'Start' value of that service to 0x4, exactly the same as using the Services MMC snap-in. It is no more "magic" than using the GUI. The only advantage is that one can use the recovery console if something in Windoze is borked to the point of not booting properly.

    It is literally amazing to me the amount of blantant FUD being spread around here by so-called computer types.

    Catalysts work fine... if you like 4 or 5 reboots to update your video driver:

    1. Uninstall ATI Control Panel... Reboot.

    2. Uninstall ATI Driver... Reboot.

    3. (opt) Upgrade to DX9, because the new drivers don't run on DX8.1b... Reboot

    4. Install new ATI driver... Reboot.

    5. Install new ATI Control Panel... Reboot


    6. (opt) Find out that your favorite MMORPG doesn't work with Catalysts version 3.3+ . Enjoy 4 more reboots to take your computer back to a working state.

    7. (opt) Decide that your next video card will be better supported, and start cruising Pricewatch...


    Yup, that's wayyy better than NVidia's weenie one-reboot per driver scheme :)

    At my place of business, we use Network Associates for our virus scanner (warning: PDF!). It is available with an enterprise control panel that other sites in my org enjoy. (I prefer to script out most of the deployment functions for my site.)

    This, combined with good general IT practices, have kept us virus-free for quite some time. YMMV, of course :)

    They united in backrooms everywhere and formed Political Action Committees (PACs). They used television and newspaper to spin their story to the heartstrings of Joe and Jane Sixpack. They understood that their best tool was the ability to come off as harmless. "A pail full of kittens", to quote a certain movie.

    2) They are, often, better off financially.
    How many poor gay men/women do you know? (And "I'm gay by virtue of being in a State Prison" doesn't count.)

    Two Things:

    Yes, quite a few programs "require" admin access unnecssarily, especially certain games.

    It's a shame, but since most (home) users don't know the difference, they accept this, and run as a local admin.

    Yes, you *can* admin a win2k domain from the command line. Even if you don't write in perl or {insert scripting lang here}, you have the resource kit available to you for all sorts of remote admin tasks.
