Thats *all* consoles do. They generally don't have to worry about the un-game related processes that a PC does. I doubt, however, that a whole game will be loaded into RAM, that just doesn't sound feasable to me.
Perhaps if the author had worded it "up to $10.4 million" instead of "$2.4 mil (plus up to $800k a year for 10 years)", my thoughts on this subject would be a bit different. $10.4 mil is significantly larger than $2.4 mil. I stated in my post above that $2.4 mil might not be enough for this switch, but $10.4 mil? Perhaps.
If you want people to find scientific things interesting, they must have a higher level of education than they do now. I'm not saying people need to be smarter, but they need to understand what little value an "entertaining" but dumbed-down story about science has. Can you really expect a story about the space elevator to be more entertaining to people today than say, Crappy Karaoke Night (American Idol) or Who Wants to be a Slut? (Joe Millionaire and ilk)?
I think I remember from high school being told why missile defense systems did not exist. I believe an agreement was reached so that no country would develop such technology without giving it to all other countries or something like that.
One of the big reasons nukes were never fired during the Cold War was because if one side fired them, they could be sure to expect 10 times as many coming back at them. This was called Mutually Assured Destruction, or something equally positive. If somebody could defend themselves from nukes, they would be free to blow everybody else up with impunity.
I really try not to watch the news very much any more, but I think the agreement still stands to not build missile defences. Can anybody enlight me to how accurate I am on this?
I strongly agree with you here. What is needed is a more "casual" MMOG, where you don't need to stop eating to become successful in. There was something in the article about UO and EQ being developed for users to pay on an hourly basis, so perhaps long spawn times are a relic of that system.
If you make it too "casual" however, and people can pop in and out at will, you lose some of the point of the game, the community and the relationships needed to succeed. In a game like this, they only groups you'd see doing things would be people that know each other from RL, so whats even the point of playing? Hey that sounds like Diablo 2, huh?
I don't really think this guy is trying to prevent people from making MMOGs; I think he is trying to raise the standards for that genre of games. God knows we don't want to see any Deer Hunter: Online titles coming out, so give the guy some slack if he seems confrontational.
This, I think, falls under that rarely used "constructive" branch of criticism.
The angular velocity of the object equals the square root of Pi, times the gravity divided by the distance the pancake is from the elbow times four
hmm . . . I notice that this formula does not factor in mass of the pancake. this makes me wonder, being not-so-smart in physics, would this formula apply for any size pancake?? and how about objects other than pancakes? could I flip say, a thanksgiving turkey and still have it land perfectly in the pan, using this formula??
and why do Scots like cheese in their pancakes?? don't they know the proper way to do anything is the American way, i.e. sugar and syrup??
Ok first thing: are you pro-spam? Because if you are you would be the first one I have ever seen. And I would also have 1 billion emails to send your way.
Explain to me how this is a violation of the freedom of speach. What I see being possibly denied here is the freedom of listening. You can send all the emails you want promising a debt-free penis enlarger, AOL won't stop that. All they're doing is refusing to use their system to get your message through. I don't see anything wrong with that.
This isn't to say this is my opinion of the whole situation, but you gave one extreme, I've given the other, and somewhere between the truth probably lies.
Could you imagine what would happen if there were security issues with something like this? The implications would keep me out from under the remote-controlled knife. One could conceivably go in to get your tonsils removed, and some kid could take over the connection and carve their initials on your forehead or something. Albeit my understanding of network security is almost non-existent, but I think this is still something somebody should think about.
Obligitory bad joke: "So would all operations be done calling collect?"
You really ought to give Return to Castle Wolfenstein a spin. If Doom scared you, you then RtCW will having you turning the lights back up during the game.
Hmm forgot about that one, I would like to give that a spin. I'll probably wait until it hits bargain bin, like most games i play. Thanks for pointing that out though!
I completely agree that Doom is still one of the greatest games of all time, however, the why part is a bit different for me.
See, my strongest memory of playing Doom was constantly being scared. The atomosphere of the entire game was engineered to scare me, and it did a damn good job of it. Never before then and never since then has a game produced such a response in me, and I know I'm not the only one to feel this way.
Don't get me wrong, I love the huge list of WADs we can play, and when they first started appearing I thought it was one of the coolest things that a game could have done to it. But now, this experience is no long unique to Doom. I would argue that some of the best user-made modifications were for other games (Team Fortress, Rocket Arena, Counter-Strike, sorry for the MP bias). Doom had some of the first user-created content, and perhaps the most, but it is not defining of the Doom experience for me.
Now the question I want answered is will Doom 3 scare me again?

That leads to some interesting prospects for the future of the Army. "Geek First Class" might become a common rank.
Hmm.

No need! Bill Nye is still alive!

Is Congress actually stepping *out* of the stone age??
Oh wait, never mind. Maybe it is a good idea. :p

Bored and tired minds want to know!!

Why is "Transaction Processing Performance Council" abbreviated "TPC"?

I think this is already in production. To lazy for a google search but I'm pretty sure. What is the world coming to I swear.
