My wife has a prepaid through Platinumtel. We buy $100 chunks of credit which usually last around for 8 months or so. 5 cents a minute for calls, 2 cents for texts, and 10 cents a meg for data. The phone was an older Blackberry that cost $20. She doesn't care about apps, and actually uses it as a phone, not a computer, so that is why prepaid works for her.

Are you using a pre-paid phone? My wife probably spends no more than $10 a month for her calls. The phone cost $20, for a 5 year old blackberry, and 5 cents a minute for calls. She only uses it as a phone though.
I carry a work supplied blackberry, so I have no costs. If I did not have that, I imagine I would do like my wife and carry a cheap pre-paid phone. I see no need to carry around the internet, and would probably only do an hour or two of calls per month.

One small thing, I do $40 a week in gas, or $31,200 over 15 years.
I am assuming you are not going on any road trips that require you to use the petrol engine. Seriously though, what does your electricity cost?

I change oil about twice a year at $70 a change (7 quarts syn). Battery about once every 7 years at $150. I would guess you will need at least one set of batteries during that time at what, $15000?

I am not trying to smear the car, just bring up the point that the numbers don't work for everyone.

  6. Re:Sad on Chevy Volt Meets High Resistance, GM Suspends Sales · · Score: 1

What the problem is, is it's a $40,000 Chevy. A mid sized 4 door sedan from Chevy shouldn't cost $40,000. I can't see a situation where a car would be worth that kind money. For me, it makes more sense to buy a used car. I use about $40 a week, or $2000 a year for gas. Since my car cost me $5900, I would have to drive it for at least 15 years to get close to the cost of the Volt. The electricity isn't free, and the trips are not all short. In that same 15 years you may spend $5000 in energy vs my $30,000. I'd still be ahead money and comfort wise. BTW, my car was $56,000 new. I love buying used!

Agreed. I have been using media center for several years, and for most things, it's a great interface. I am not a big fan of how it handles music, but is great with video files, TV/DVR, and watching DVDs. Hulu has one of the worst 10 ft interfaces I have seen. Fonts are too small, it's difficult to navigate, and control meanings are not consistent.

The HTPC has a tuner card with rabbit ears, so I can DVR a few OTA shows, and the rest is all streaming and downloads. There is so much of that available, I don't really feel like I am missing anything.
