The key thing is that the middle class is going away. You are either rich or poor. No in between as the US manufacturing base has gone to the orient. Yeah, there are tons of jobs clerking in stores or flipping burgers. Those count towards the employment statistics. Real wages and buying power are dropping, and have been since 1979 according to the CS Monitor. http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/0211/p03s01-usec.htm l I used to work in telecom (MCI), now I work in the medical field and make less money. Not only that, all my recurring bills have gone up. I know I have way less disposable income than I had 8 years ago.
Damn, and out of mod points too.. You need to not post as Anonymous Coward. Not quite every Republican by the way, but well over half. And the "fair minded" Democrats will capitulate again.
Watch 2001 again. The effects still look great and it came out 9 years before StarWars. Don't get me wrong though, the opening scene with the star destroyer going past blew me away then.
"Google now has access to the cookies and subsequently browsing history of vast numbers of web users" no it doesn't, the cookies reside on MY computer, and I purge my cookies every time I close the browser.
I think the key phrase there is "history of vast numbers of web users". Most people just don't block anything. Nerds on Slashdot do. We are a statistical blip as far as they are concerned.
They practically beg for you not to use adblock or adblock plus. I say too freaking bad. If they really want to keep cheap bastards like me from using their site, they will have to do some artful coding to detect that I am not looking at their 3rd party ads.
Glad to see that they are finally trying to fix the partition manager. The only way I have been able to try out Ubuntu was on a machine that I didn't worry about blowing away the primary partition. I would have had to blow away my home partition on my windows/linux box with previous releases of Ubuntu. If you check out online forums, you would see that was a fairly common problem.
The Ramones only stations are going to take a bath under this. The all Yes station will get off light on comparison. pay royalties based on estimates of how many songs were played over a given period of time, or a 'tuning hour,' as opposed to counting every single song
"It sounds cliche, but there really are a lot of people who just want to use their computer to check email, surf the Internet and watch youtube videos."
Which is what my wife does with her machine. It started life as my 600mhz Compaq slot A Athlon. While I used it, it got a 850mhz processor, and a radeon 8500 added. After I built my "new" machine (XP1700, and now currently XP2400 homebrew), I put Mandrake linux on it. She is currently running Mandrake 10.1 and has no problem watching videos or doing any of the mundane internet related tasks. It even has enough horsepower to watch DIVXes and decode DVDs. It also never crashes.. great for me!
I guess what I am saying, is that it doesn't take a whole lot of computer to handle most people's needs.

After my first abortive attempt at CFLs, I bought some more last year when our local power company had a deal where you could get them for $1 a piece. Those seem to be lasting OK, though I bet I am not the only person who tried them a few years ago and gave up on them for a while due to crappy life.
Virtually every CFL I have had lasted less long than an incandesent. I major plus for this new technology would be a low wattage bright bulb that fits current fixtures. I have a lot of fixtures that cant use them, as well as outdoors or inside the oven.
At least in my case, I see no reason to change CPU as my xp2400 does well enough by me. I would need to replace my ram, mobo and CPU and possibly video card to move to a newer generation. That's at least $300 with even a cheap CPU and getting a mobo that supports AGP It also wouldn't cover replacing the 2.5gb of ram I currently run.
I'm sure most people don't need as much horsepower as they are pitching now.
Actually, it sounds somewhat similar to the Samsung camcorder I had that had a Sony CCD the went bad. Sony recalled thousands of cameras, movie and snapshot type, due to bad ccds.
To take care of folks like that, I change the icon associated with Firefox to the IE icon. That way they get Firefox in the way they are used to using the Intarweb.

Saracen pig! Spartan dog! Take this! And this! Roman cow! Russian snake! Spanish fly!
+1 for a What's up Tiger Lily reference!

Wave upon wave of demented avengers
March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream."

I remembered that from my youth and wanted one in the worst way. I think they were advertised either in Boys Life, or comic books.8 bowgosidehealth9.asp
BTW, this article from 2001 mentions the boots and the pogo stick.

I must have been reading Slashdot too long. My eyes scanned that as Master Control Penguin.

So easy, even a cave man could do it!
Is a 110 year old home old enough, and the fact that I am a tightwad and turn the lights off all the time? ;)

Why do so many people still use gmail? Isn't it a beta? I sure as hell wouldn't entrust anything important to beta anything!
""we live in a fiat economy"
Is the smallest unit of currency a Fiat Uno?"
Actually, half of an Uno is a Cinquecento.
Excuse my ignorance to all things Mac, but what is the difference between Boot Camp and GRUB/LILO? Can't GRUB/LILO boot a Mac OS?

The Iraq war has cost $355,000,000,000 so far. That's 3550 potential cancer cures at your example rate, in the span of 4 years.
