  1. Re:DOES IT TRIPLE BOOT? on Gamers Itching To Switch To Macs? · · Score: 1

I asked about this in my local Apple Store yesterday. According to the person on staff at the Genius Bar Apple hasn't done anything with the BIOS backward compatability they introduced in 10.4.6 to prevent the installation of any x86 operating system.

Seems like BSD and other versions of Windows may also be possible (though possibly extremely difficult to install)

An interesting aside, the Genius Bar employee was also a Linux user and had a 10 minute conversation with me about that

Didn't John Mayer get on stage at this years MacWorld with Steve Jobs to intro the new version of GarageBand and talk about how he has used it. And he ported it using a quite new PB, sounds like Trent is a Mac user.

Should have clicked past the warning. It loads successfully and you can play with it.

  4. Re:The ipod is always thought of as a music player on Was the Mac mini Intended to Have an iPod dock? · · Score: 1

This would be quite interesting at a place like Duke University that is giving all incoming freshman iPods. Labs of Mac Minis could work as lab workstations or drop in custom environments. With the iPod holding all of the data and remaining constant across machines the user experience in a lab would be increased dramatically.
I could see an optional $479 (I think this is Mac Mini Ed. Price) charge on your tuition to have a MacMini in your room that would allow you to dock your iPod and back up things onto your Mini's hard drive being useful as well.
A computing environment that follows you around campus, now there's a way to increase education sales.

And, no I'm not a student of or afiliated in any way with Duke or an Apple employee.

Since OS X is UNIX at it's core and IE 5.2 for Mac runs on it, this is technically wrong.

  7. Me Too, From Linux on Some iPod Fans Dump PCs For Macs · · Score: 1

I bought an iPod in late July, I've been surrounded by Macs @ work. So, when I bought my PowerBook in late October I'd say it's part the iPod and part the Mac exposure at work. Regardless, I'm happy I went with the Mac (I even stood in line for opening day at the local Apple store that weekend) and I do find myself using my Linux desktop far less. Who knows, maybe I'll use my desktop more often after the coolness of the new laptop wears off.

Super Mario Brothers is the only movie I've ever walked out of the theatre due to lack of quality. I was 12 at the time, I had a greater tolerance for a shitty plot.

  9. Re:The Difference on Linux vs. Windows: What's The Difference? · · Score: 2, Insightful

In fact, my workstation won't let me restart or shutdown without asking why I'm doing that. It gets annoying if I have to reboot for something, but it tells how little MS expects to have the OS go down.

This isn't because they don't expect it to go down. This is because it is designed to be a server operating system. Asking why you're shutting down or rebooting is a feature present to give system administrators a record of what is going on with the machine. It may or may not have anything to do with Microsoft not expecting the operating system to crash.

unless, of course, I put it there, but they call me enough already with stupid user questions... I ain't giving them a new piece of software.

I've pretty much had the opposite experience. I've put Firefox on quite a few of my friend's and family's machines and have received positive feedback. From the lack of popups (I set that part up) to the tabbed browsing they love it.

I am all for Mozilla/Firefox, but I just can't see it ever landing on my fathers Dell, or my aunt's HP.

This I have to agree with, I work at a university of reasonable size and have seen the results of processing the logs to give information about the browsers used. The top 3 spots are IE. With IE6 Leading by about 4x's over any other version. Users stick to what is there as long as they can use it, in the case of IE they have a lot of past experience.

  11. Storage on Solid-State Mini-ITX Linux Recording Studio HOWTO · · Score: 4, Insightful

Exactly how much recording will be possible. At any decent quality you're going to require a whole lot of flash storage. Seems like soundproofing the case might be cheaper.

  12. Less is more - to a typical end user on Firefox/Thunderbird Plugins: Is Less More? · · Score: 4, Insightful

From a usability standpoint less is definitely more when dealing with typical end users. Most of the people I have installed FireFox for on their Windows machines didn't care about anything but me setting it to block popups and that it automatically imported their IE bookmarks. Beyond that it just worked, they were happy.

When dealing with Slashdot style users plugins become huge, I like to customize my browser to fit my browsing style and want to see all the options, not what would be best for the typical end user.

  13. Re:Is this actually a good thing? on Newsflash: Gourmet Coffees Have Lots Of Caffeine · · Score: 1

I used to be addicted to caffeine pretty badly in high school and my first few years of college. I cut down a few times but I'd end up tired a lot or just go back to drinking coffee cuz it was tasty. (besides, calculus is more fun when your hands are shaking)
I eventually got sick of the headaches from not being "properly caffeinated" and my girlfriend was always mentioning I didn't drink enough water. Turns out I was dehydrated most of the time (she was right).
Now I drink about the same amount of caffeine and mix in non caffeinated beverages also and don't get the headaches.

I am in a similar position, without the job offers though. One of the more interesting bits of advice I've received is to not settle for a starting salary that is too low. Your initial starting salary is something you'll be asked about when applying for future positions. It make take a few extra years to catch up if you start too low. With that being said the national average for a programming position out of college is around $45,000.
