The day in question was one in which the student was required to show up to take the TAKS test, a state-wide standardized test that's required for graduation.
Bah, a week is nothing. I had no TV for almost 2 years, and I read a lot of books (like the entire Dune series, including prequels) - Now, I'm sucked back in watching reality TV... bah .
I got mine about a year ago - 1400x1050x32bit (SXGA+) resolution (although DVD playback only supports 24bit) - it's got a great pair of built-in speakers, 18 GB hard drive. It's a PIII 600 with 90 MBs of RAM with a dual-boot setup between Win98 and Mandrake 7. I only had to tweak a couple of files in order to get mandrake to install and use the full rez of the LCD screen. It's also got s-video out so with a pair of Monster (tm) cables I picked up for about $30, I can play DVDs on any TV, just about anywhere I go. The two deciding factors for me was the 1400x1050 resolution and Dell's premiere service and support. - I just wish I had waited a couple of months and gotten the UXGA+ when it came out.
Working in tech support for an ISP, we have escalation procedures defined for just about every fire/network/telecom outage. It's called a service level interruption procedure, or SLIP for short. We "practice" each and every day:)
It's odd to see an article of this type (supporting the non-sharing of information, even if it's something as basic as not sharing what language you're using) posted on Slashdot, one of the primary supports of open-source. Larry Wall, on the other hand, is in support of the sharing of information, when he talks about Hubris, the basic motivation that should drive programmers (and the designers of languages) to get other people to want to use the same code/languages that we use.
Here how you do it : "I'm sorry that you feel it's our fault for allowing your pilot to behave in a reckless, life endangering, and inane manner while he was accompanying our spy plane within international airspace and above international waters. In addition, we are also sorry that our pilot felt that it was necessary to land the badly damaged spy plane (you remember, the one your pilot collided with in mid-air?) on a island that housed one of your satellite-transmission interception facilities, without first requesting the appropriate clearances and visas for our equipment and personel.
Is Microsoft looking at implementing an OS based on BSD (because of it's license) - or looking to implement some of the features that unix/linux people like to use?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that punishment (holding someone accountable for their actions...) was a conservative/right-wing ideal, whereas implementing systems to work around the "badness" (ignoring it, giving people freedom from it) was a liberal/left-wing ideal. Anyone else?
1stup.com was the company that Altavista (and others like them) were co-branding the free-dialup ISP with. 1stup's parent company is selling 1stup, so Altavista (and these other companies) are left out in the cold. They had no choice.
Just for fun, I went and looked up their street address on Mapquest, and it shows their business location to be near to a golf course and right next to a park, in an area that appears to be all residential. Just my paranoia, but it would appear that either they're operating out of their apartment or their business location is very idyllic.
Here is the map
Why was Mr. Small-time farmer objecting to a McDonalds being built? Simply because it was a franchise of a multi-national corporation? What were the destroying? What were they harming? Is there any substance to this story other than flag-waving?

There's one way to cut spending in a church :
