Unfortunatly you've got a point, which is sad, we have all these technologies and a lot of the time they are used for advertising and spamming us with junk we don't want to see or detracts from the main content. I guess the solution that works quite well is the "Click to View" option, where all flash and other things are hidden behind a button until you click it. I think you can do this in Mozilla.

Well if people want to live back in 1995 with Mosaic be my guest, but we are trying to make progress here, and flash and javascript were meant to be enabling technologies, disabling because of a single exploit or "potential" future exploits is kinda just spoiling the web for yourself and honestly being over paranoid. Just disable Flash and/or anything else that is scary for sites that you don't trust. Do you really think that www.bbc.co.uk will have the latest IE exploit on the homepage? If you are browsing sites that are dodgy and you know exactly what I'm talking about, then you have a reason to disable this stuff. If all you do is surf a few regular sites for news and updates then you don't need to worry. Disabling everything just limits your enjoyment, you might as well switch to using Lynx and be done with it. After all, who wants a rich multimedia experience?

So much for fast turn around on bug fixes for linux suddenly Windows doesn't seem so slow, I'd consider this a serious bug, one that could lead to the loss of a lot of important data and should have been addressed by now. The fact that they don't know what causes it is just plain worrying. Although I have to admit you've gotta be pretty brave to install linux on the same disk as Windows, most distros make it all too easy to format the disk and re-create the partition tables.

Business may welcome the long gap to Longhorn, since it will allow them to stick with 2000/XP for longer and save them $$$. Unless linux offers something 2000/XP doesn't they won't want to upgrade, and honestly, all most companies need is Word & E-mail.

Admitedly, it may encourge new business to take up Linux as a first choice, but upgrading... not so sure.

OF course because its running a version of "Windows" its insecure!?!

Thats just not true, the Windows 2000/XP kernel is secure, just because other programs that run in kernel mode or have rights to the system aren't doesnt't mean that Windows is insecure as a cut down OS. How complicated can a cash dispensing program be?? You can bet your ass that they've tested this stuff to death. Its going to be secure, its not going to be running Outlook or other Windows hacking prone applications.

Please Please Please people don't just state that if something has M$ stamped on it that it'll be hacked or buffer overflowed to oblivion. Microsoft is a HUGE company with many resources, if they invested enough time and money into one program they would iron out all the issues. And since an ATM is so cut down it cannot possibly be that hard to secure it (come on admit it). As for additional stuff like checking lottery numbers etc, that sort of thing would run in a restricted user mode, therefore not allowing it access to the cash dispensing, most likely if they had any sense in a sand box like java or .net.

M$ is inherintley evil, but not as bad as you may think.
