while we thought that the IBM commercials were cool my non-geek friends just said "what the fuck was that?"
They aren't into 2001: and they certainly aren't into watching someone watch TV while a near braindead boxer says 5 words. Perhaps if they used Rupert or one of the whores from the Bachelorette to promote Linux they would have had their attention.

I don't want a dream job...
Dream jobs eliminate the one good thing about life. Vacation. Whether that be on the weekends, your random days off in the middle of the week, or the two weeks you spend lounging in Jamaica.
They don't call work "work" for nothing. If it was fun they would call it Vacation. Work gives me something to look forward to when I don't have to do it. It shouldn't be an escape from your family, it shouldn't be fun, and it certainly be something you overly enjoy...
My enjoyment everyday comes in the form of looking forward to the weekend when I spend my free time geocaching with my friends or myself. If I enjoyed work I would probably be sitting in my office working. What good does that do me?
We are a sad society when we put work in front of our "real lives".
Remember that before you go off in search of the job that you just can't wait to get to everyday. Family, fun, and vacation > work.
BTW - I don't mind my job in the least. I don't complain about it and I don't hate coming to work everyday. I just think it's better to enjoy yourself outside of your job.
As someone who considers themselves "careful" as can be when it comes to keeping their system clean (Ad-aware was my option before finding Spybot) I was absolutely *shocked* at the volume of "tracking" cookies that Spybot found.
I admittedly surf porn sites regularly. I found that Spybot never complains there. It mostly complains here on Slashdot (banner ads send Avenue A) and travel sites (some Travelocity cookie is blocked A LOT).
It scared me how much shit is out there and I am GLAD that someone has created this software that is easily updated, runs relatively quickly, quitely, and easily.
I worked for ATTBI before they were swallowed up by Comcast. I still have an ATTBI hostname...
When the first round of "cable modem uncapping" documents started floating around to the masses I found plenty of open tickets that had been forwarded to the "legal department" for possible action. Most people had uncapped their modems to 10mbit/10mbit.
Apparently they had a script that ran that checked for this as they had quite a few open tickets all over the place. I guess it was not hard to find.
They would disable your modem, forcing you to power-cycle it. Then your modem would download a new, correct, config file. If they found that you were AGAIN in violation you were terminated.
Some people did not lose their service but most did.
not necessarily, but they *could* be. Setting the bandwith there is easier than having to set --max_upload_rate X with btdownloadfcurses if I happen to be downloading any ISOs of Debian;)
This runs as a simple shell script on the "router". If you want less bandwith for those ports just change the UPLINK and rerun the shell script. Changes are reflected immediately.
Honestly, when the libatm wasn't working with Debian unstable, I looked at other options but wondershaper was still the fastest and easiest!
Sets those ports to only use up 200k of my 256k upstream leaving me the rest for SSH etc. I never have any problems w/my remote connection speeds this way. It's fantastic.
I have only had a single problem, recently, with Debian unstable... It removed my libatm for some reason. I reinstalled that and all was well.
Highly recommended for everyone, not just users of this "hackable" router.
What's the difference if they don't start charging your credit card? What's the difference if YOU don't care that they sell your eating preferences.
I CARE.
Perhaps you are one of those people that LIKES getting spam in their mailbox or junk mail from the USPS. Perhaps you even enjoy idle conversation with the telemarketers.
Remember, the DNC lists only work when you haven't had an active relationship with a company. If you let them have your phone number they and their parent companies and their child companies can then call you at their will.
With the way the conglomorates are forming do you really want to do that?
that's because people the USA do NOT care. It's sad actually.
People routinely fork over their SSNs, DOB, phone number (especially to pizza outlets, delivery places, etc. I go and pick up my food so that I don't have to have a "call back" number they can store).
How about Papa Johns storing MULTIPLE credit card numbers on file under your phone number? It makes it easy to get your pizza without doing any work but do you trust Papa Johns with that info?
In some apartments (in what I feel is a violation of FCC rules but what the FCC feels isn't) they require that you place large amounts of money down on a "deposit" just to put the dish on the porch (regardless of the fact that it might be free standing).
See here for a quick link I found. Note: (2) unreasonably increase the cost of installation, maintenance or use, or
Forcing me to pay $350 deposit (of which only $75 is refunded at the END of your renting) seems to push the FREE installation costs over "reasonable".
So, Comcast is prewired into the building and I have no choice but to use the good 'ol rabbit ears.
because Americans in general are dumb. They think that if we put pretty pictures on the screen it will be less confusing than pulling Lever A for Moron #1 and Lever B for Moron #2 (pulling any other levers just adds to the winner's total by default).
We also have a problem w/political ignorance and laziness. People would rather watch Reality TV and speculate on which dumbass the whore is going to kick off next week rather than who is going to run our country...
The laziness comes in that we have "no time" to go out and vote but we have plenty of time to sit around and watch Survivor, My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancee, and The Bachelorette.
We need to make it easy for these people to watch TV while voting for another idiot to run our country.
Hope that clears it up for you (BTW, I am only 75% joking).
I happen to remember at least 10-15 years ago when a furniture company in my area had gotten busted for constantly open and closing stores and offering "GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALES".
strangely enough I do want to rent DVDs just not from video stores with no competition...
When I first moved here the nearest Blockbuster was right down the street (less than 2 miles). DVDs were 3.99 to rent. Long lines on Friday/Saturdays (20 minute wait was my longest) and the prices were crazy. I didn't really have a choice as it seemed that everything in the immediate area was Blockbuster.
Along comes Hollywood Video. 2.99 rentals with $1.00 back if you return it by midnight the next night (being that it is right across from BB they also dropped to 2.99 but no cash back).
I have absolutely no need for long rental times so this $1.00 is a gift from god. Not all their movies are set up this way (obviously) but I have always found 1 or 2 that I wanted to watch from this group.
I do want to rent. I certainly don't need an extensive DVD movie collection that I have to store, sort, and maintain. Paying $1.99 is fine for me for most movies. I'll wait till they come out at Target for $10 if they are really worth purchasing.
well the problem is that the Patent Office saw that it was an issue only because of Microsoft's "long arm". They are going to quickly realize that they can approve this sort of non-sense and profit from it in the political system.
If you think that the Patent system will have drastic changes I think you've got another thing coming.
there was a search engine on an external site (can't think of it) that stored all +4 and +5 posts in a searchable index for the trolls to get modded up on.
No, they are MISLEADING people into thinking that it is BANDWITH and not 24/7 access. That's fraud.
"Let them believe what they want" is no excuse.
They know exactly what "Unlimited" means without any quantifier... If you say "Unlimited access times, available 24/7" that's one thing. Not telling the exactly what you mean is misleading and illegal.
Originally, many internet services operated on a business model of overselling their internet service. Frequently, your local cable company advertises 250kps bandwidth for each of its customers. But they never originally expected a large percentage (if anyone at all) to saturate their entire allocation 90% to 100% of the time, which is becoming a growing trend among service users.
Yup they sure did. You paid for it in the speed shown on your downloads... So why in the world would they up their download caps to DOUBLE what they had when they started enforcing the "local average limits"?
This is bullshit on Comcast's part, plain and simple. If they were having such a problem w/bandwith being a "hot commodity" they wouldn't have nearly doubled our speed caps from 1800/256 to 3000/256. I went from 220kB/s to 390kB/s.
they are based on a local average... So if you live in a college-kid infested town you are likely to be in an area w/a higher average. If you live in an area of middle-aged to older-aged individuals who use the service for fast checks to yahoo and comcast.net then the average will be much lower.
The fact that they can't a) tell you how much you have downloaded, b) refuse to tell you what their # is, and c) don't think that they need to tell you is what makes it unfair.
If you are going to shut people off you need to give them a tool that tracks it, allow them to call up and ask a CSR for the current bandwith usage, and also know what the cap is.
We have talked about this numerous times on Slashdot before (at least twice). I have posted that what really sucks about it is:
a) they took over from AT&T, raised prices, forced you to get CATV or pay even higher rates (42.95/45.95 with CATV or 60.95 or 63.95 without)
b) have little to no competition in the broadband market, especially at the speeds they offer (now 3mbs in most, if not all, areas)
c) now are able to control their userbase with "invisible" DOWNLOAD caps (not speed caps as some people are confused with) based on a "local average" whatever that is...
So, they get a bunch of customers becomming one of the largest ISPs and probably *the* largest broadband ISP. They don't like the fact that some users are actually USING their bandwith so they decide to make up near-random numbers so that they can cut you off when they want... I have GT3, including a USB steering wheel/pedals, for the PS2. The gameplay sucks compared to GT1.
You just met one. In fact, I play two games on my PS2.
Tiger Woods for PS2 and Gran Turismo 1 for PS1.
I would not have even bothered with a PS2 if it wasn't for backwards compatibility.
not necessarily, but they *could* be. Setting the bandwith there is easier than having to set --max_upload_rate X with btdownloadfcurses if I happen to be downloading any ISOs of Debian ;)

For those of you that don't know, and are interested, Wondershaper can be found HERE.
It is AMAZING.
Sample config:
DOWNLINK=6000
UPLINK=200
DEV=eth0
# low priority source ports
NOPRIOPORTSRC="6881 6882 6883 6884 6885 6886 6887 6888 6889 80"

I didn't think so.

Scary.
they want to find, track, and arrest people? And to think I thought it was 20 years later... Guess not.
I'm buying stock in Reynolds.

the only chinese porn I have ever seen is the two girls in a bathtub eating shit and making each other puke and then eating that.
;)
The Chinese NEEDED to block that shit. Their people are weird when it comes to porn

Looks like a good business descision to me.
