perhaps to give an in-depth look at what happened and to answer the questions that the public had about WHY it happened.
Rubbernecking is inevitable and pretty much unavoidable. Be thankful it wasn't as big of a train-wreck as they could have (and normally would have) written it up as.
One of the crew members came to rest beside a country road near Hemphill. The remains were found by a 59-year-old chemical engineer and Vietnam veteran named Roger Coday, who called the sheriff and then watched from the porch of his mobile home as a funeral director drove by to collect them.
IIRC (if I read correctly) they were about 19 miles up when the fuselage broke apart... So this astronaut had about that far to fall before coming to rest on the ground.
I saw it over and over again on TV and thought, well, at least it was instant and there's nothing left... I was wrong and I now have deep sorrow for these individuals.
Granted it's probably because the characters are actually co-dependant and everyone was fantastic but still...
I saw Lost in Translation at a pre-screening and while I thought it was "entertaining" I certainly don't believe Bill Murray was any better in that one than any other movie he has been in.
Depp's character was fantastic and he really led the movie and he probably deserves the award out of the list IMHO.
But why not at least NOMINATE an actor for best supporting from LOTR?
perhaps you are serious, which I seriously hope you aren't...
But, honestly, of course they are about profits, they operate in AMERICA, a capatalist economy. Hmm, you mean that they want to succeed and crush competition?
Imagine that.
Mod parent up as funny or down as troll, whatever you see fit.
This is what was actually sent to SCO and quite honestly I don't see anything wrong with it. The first clause is dismissive but the demands are reasonable. Unprofessional would have been something like "Blow me."
Saying "Blow me." would be not only infantile and not professional it would be completely inappropriate and pointless.
I don't personally care what the/. thinks is acceptable in regards to this matter... What he said is not professional and should have been either reworded or dropped all together. You don't sling mud back because Bob the Bully slung mud in your eye.
who said that you had to be as infantile as they were? "Kicking them in the nuts when they are down?" Oh give me a break.
Let's make ourselves look even better in the face of the law when it comes time for that. Sending back threatening letters doesn't make anyone any better than SCO.
The entire letter was "acceptable" until his closing paragraph where he told them to stop wasting his time and their time... If you want to sound professional you do not tell someone to stop wasting your time in a letter. Find another way to put it.
I personally feel that ignoring them is a far better approach... Let them waste their time and effort mailing these things out to get no response. It's more frustrating that way.
Interesting that you feel it is vaporware when I have been using it for well over a year and it has been around (in use) for quite a bit longer than that.
I guess there are multiple definitions of vaporware possible but, honestly, if a product is in use by more than a research team, I would consider it to be a current technology.
No, it's not even close to testing for drugs, being that this plagarism detector is at the collegiate level.
People aren't *always* tested for every event they compete in. They might have random tests by the NCAA or college and they might be tested by the college for suspicion but they aren't tested every single time at every single event.
The point in the article about it being laziness and budget issues by the college not wanting to hire enough staff is ridiculous though. Either a single professor grades the papers or a professor and a grad student do it. What are there supposed to be 2 or 3 professors grading papers for each class?
I don't agree with this particular method being chosen to police the papers... I think that professors should have to grade the papers (for spelling, grammar, and for content -- plagerized or not). If the student has shown issues in the past with this topic then perhaps it should be scrutinized more carefully (even by a commitee) but by a web-based program?
Let's get back to what's important in colleges... TEACHING and GRADING. Stop worrying so much about how much free time you have to work on your next book.
You know, for all the bad things that I hear about e-machines I can't find a single problem with the one I have been using since 11/2002. It has been up, without fail, running Linux since that day (only down for routine kernel upgrades).
Sure it was cheap, came with a bunch of crap I didn't really need, but it was a gift and it works fine.
The people who are going to be first in line to purchase a 64bit laptop are going to purchase an e-machine because that's who's offering it currently. I don't see Dell coming out saying they are, do you? In fact, I have better success with my e-machine than I did with my Dell laptop. After dealing with Dell for that particular machine I will *never* *ever* buy from them again.
I would go with the e-machine without a hesitation.
the reason that Greyhound is faster is because that some Amtrak connections ARE via busses.
While it may be more economical to pay for a one way ticket via Amtrak rather than an airline, the 22 hour trip and the possibiilty of having to take a bus is ridiculous...
I'd rather pay for a round trip and skip the second half of the trip (if I don't know a future date that I could use it) than take an Amtrak.
remember, paying cable is a small part of my yearly budget but I still don't see a need to waste $59.95 a month on it... Amazingly enough I have the self-control not to needlessly waste $60 a month and I get to spend it on other things!
Diverting funds from NASA to domestic programs will not change anything except to kneecap our development as a multi-planet species.
Yup, while what you say about it not solving the countries social issues is probably over half true, there is the simple fact that most of us in the country don't have any desire to become a multi-planet species...
I don't care if we find intelligent life anywhere, if we do, I certainly don't want to threaten our way of life by inviting them back to see what we have over here, and my biggest complaint is that I just don't give a fuck. If you are going to waste $820 million dollars why not build shit right here in our deserts on THIS country? Let's see if we can get life to survive in the harshest areas RIGHT the fuck here.
so? what does that matter? Most people running Win98 aren't going to upgrade any hardware and aren't going to need any new drivers for their hardware...
If you aren't going to upgrade to XP you should expect that you aren't going to have support for the latest hardware.
People just want something that works (there is no real need for "bigger, faster, better" anymore (for the layman who is running 98). They just want to make sure that there is some support out there if they need it.
Hell, the reason I still run Win98 is because my laptop cannot run any Windows version higher than that...
Like I said before... MS is probably banking on the idea that if these companies aren't forced into a company-wide OS upgrade they might be more willing to upgrade Office (according to the Slashbots, where the real money is made).
Customers are going to get their way whether MS likes it or not. They are no longer the only viable game in town. Free software has shown that it is slowly starting to be taking hold by some early adopters...
If I was MS I would fear that if I didn't listen to the users that I would be out of work soon.
Well I think MS realizes that if they start a push towards upgrades there is the possibility that the fees involved might push the coporates to free alternatives... Maybe by pushing for upgrades only with Office and backend items they can leave 98 on the desktops and save themselves from companies going with a mass conversion to Linux?
Wow. MS has really been listening to users recently... This particular move came even faster than the idea to include a more configurable firewall and popup blocking! I am actually quite impressed. Perhaps they are learning THIS from Linux? Listen to your users and make changes quickly to fit what they want and need?
At first you would think that they would want to "force" users to upgrade to XP/beyond but they realized that it probably will not happen for most users that are still running 98. If you can't beat them join them?
Being a recent re-convert from Linux back to Windows (still use Linux for a lot but Windows solely for "desktop stuff") I am glad to see that it was worth paying the "MS tax" on the new computers I recently purchased.

Now as far as them cavorting as a tactical unit... That's something else entirely.
For its part, the RIAA maintains that the up-close-and-personal techniques are nothing new. RIAA spokesman Jonathan Lamy says its investigators do not represent themselves as police, and that the incident reports vendors are asked to sign, in which they agree to hand over their discs, explicitly state that the forfeiture is voluntary. All right boys... Make sure the boots go up above the knees... We're heading into bullshit territory!
If the RIAA isn't trying to look like the police why do they bother hiring ex-police officers, wear clothing similar to raiding police units, and cavort about as some sort of tactical unit? It is obvious to me that they want the "villains" to think they are the cops (and those street vendors, at least for the time being, are going to believe that they are).
Pink slips that say they handed the stuff over voluntarily or not... They are acting as an official force on duty to confiscate material and they want to look as official as possible to have these individuals fork over the material quickly and without issue. If they are so concerned about their property being "stolen" and resold why don't they contact the real police and have them do it? Probably because the real police have better things to do than worry about what is being sold in Chinatown...
