well people are trying to do that (RH has public appeal) but others just don't care... They want their system one way.. Whatever, let them fiddle w/stuff. If you want a standard distrib put your faith behind one and try to get people to use it ;)

just because the device runs an open-sourced OS does NOT mean that it cannot be modified by a third party and not distributed. They can do whatever they like to the OS and keep it to themselves.

I would assume that the per-license fees are important here, god only knows how many devices they are going to build, but I wouldn't be able to say that that is the only reason.

I am very intrigued to see this happen, but not very surprised. Maybe the US is worried that Bill Gates is going to take over afterall ;-)

20 seconds vs 5 seconds. Honestly, I think that isn't a HUGE concern. Maybe if you are doing 150+mb of data (which some people w/larger handhelds are doing) but not for a Palm.

as far as using Ethernet *and* wireless, I wasn't talking about that. I want Ethernet so I can hook my handheld up to the network. I want Wireless internet so I can hook up to the network from outside my house.

  5. USB... on Palm Talks About New OS · · Score: 2

I really don't understand. I don't use USB that much (due to a Linux based computer) but I do own a USB camera (yes that is only supported by Windows at this time). When I ordered a handheld did I care if it had USB? No. I can plug in serial just as easily, and it is supported by all OS's.

Bluetooth -- do I really need wireless connectivity other than REAL, true, wireless Internet? No.

Color, yeah, that's a plus, but not a necessity.

Show me ethernet, fast wireless Internet (REAL Internet) and I will be impressed.
