I like that sort of data better than "which game runs faster, loko better". It actually showed solid proof that previously released hardware is just as good (if not better) than new stuff (DC vs PS2).
If this was a product released by any other company (say Sega), would it have had the appeal that it does? The dreamcast never seemed to get really big. I always stuck to PS1 games..
A superior machine w/less appeal b/c of a name.. just a thought (and no, PPC does not fit into this category:)
yeah, I know what the original question was. I was going against RH's assertion that MS was a competitor (whether or not it is a distribution is irrelevant).
MS is NOT a competitor to RH. Nor vise versa.
This is my opinion of course. If you don't like it, I don't care:)
I currently use WP8 as my WordProcessor of choice. I have never used (nor will I probably ever use) Framemaker. I didn't even know that Adobe had a WP.
I find it odd that they said that you will have to either use another version of FM to use your documents from the beta or convert them to text. I would think that a viable WP running on any non-Windows platform would have to be able to handle MS Word conversions in/out. WP8 doesn't handle this all that well but well enough that I can do what I need to w/it.
I couldn't say that MS is a competitor anyway... RH is tiny in comparisson to MS. Linux is gaining ground on Windows, but at least in the next several years will it even be close to being in competition w/MS.
sure! If @home even gave a shit about what their users do. I tried to report an @home user this summer for flooding my poor 56k connection and they ignored me. My ISP wouldn't give me a static IP to block it at the router, so I was basically screwed.
doing something like this really doesn't help anyone. The ISP's have to cooperate (on both ends) and they normally don't care to.
I wish that people would stop being gay and just use the net for what they should.
they not only don't have titles yet, they haven't chosen a definite video card and no definite CPU...
They have several "prototype models".. If they are going to be released in Spring 2001, they better get their asses in gear..
I may be wrong but it just seems to fishy to be real. They are either not going to make their deadline (which is almost a definite) or they aren't going to do it at all.
yeah, he gives the general disclaimer that he doesn't hate Windows as much as he used to, but points out that he only uses it for games now.. I am no Windows lover, but I definitly see it as more useful than just a game OS.
He also seemed very adament about Win4Lin. Why not just put the damn banner in the middle of every paragraph. I wonder if he was making some sort of ad revenue from that. He should be, he sure was plugging them enough.
I am sure that using Linux code in Windows would be a violation of the GPL. I highly doubt that MS is doing that though. Just what they would need. More bullshit for themselves to dig through. Bill Gates putting up w/that sort of strategy? I think not. He would be embarassed as all hell if anyone ever found out. Give the coders at MS credit. They are extremely bright individuals. I am sure they are working their slave asses off to make a better product. Do NOT jump to baseless conclusions like that.
like I said, it being free was a small portion of the deal... They wanted an open-sourced, free, small OS. It already has a lot of tools for porting applications, and many have been extremely successful at bringing over basic apps to the handheld market (ala Mutt, etc).
yeah it is under heavy development and costs a hefty price. I am not against pay/for software, but I am not about to pay for software that doesn't work right out of the box and is under development.
It seemes like an excellent program, it just isn't worth $ right now.
no, they are using Linux b/c it is useful for machines that are small (like this one). The fact that it is free is only a small portion of the reason.
It is a known fact that Linux can run in a small bit of space.. Why would they want to waste more memory than they have to (as the PocketPC's are using 16M of ROM to have WinCE+apps+crap). Linux is going to be in about 1 to 2M of ROM.
Linux may not be the OS choice for Desktops, but I really see it as an up-in-coming option on the handheld market. The apps at this point in time are scarce, but they shouldn't be hard to code (look at the availability of Palm apps).
Eventually Linux could be a major player in this market. I have faith in Linux on the Handheld. I do not have this faith w/the desktop market (http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=00/11/21/2044 234&cid=201)
funny thing is that the web now has interfaces for NNTP browsing that are in most cases more friendly than most USEnet programs (Deja News emails me my headliners from rec.music.gdead, I don't see 'tin' doing that).
I can search a MASSIVE amount of newsgroups fast w/Deja (and probably google).
Well, whatever, I am done posting my random none-sense;)
what also confuses me is why we would want to use that sort of function to transfer data (audio/visual). FTP was always there for that, there is some use of HTTP to send large binaries, but mostly it is still done via FTP. That is after all what it was intended for.
I say we stick to the way things are. I don't find the Internet to be as slow as he apparently believes it to be. Change is usually good, but only forward progress... No sense in reverting back to things that were left in the past (for good reason).
even though this guy has valid points (I am not so sure about a 10k% increase in speed) I don't particularly like the idea of a return to Gopher. We moved away from Gopher for a reason. It was UGLY, it was UGLY, and it was OLD and UGLY. Yes, the Internet was ugly then, but Gopher looks much better in past thought.
The Internet is in an evolutionary stage. We started out w/old stuff and moved to much prettier things. Yes, Gopher could do the same sort of things, but honestly why change what works (they never do).
Let's continue to shoot the Gopher rather than just flush it out w/water so it can come back;-)
I don't see any god damn rocket launchers or lightning guns.. Throwing a tree (as mentioned before) at a person to end the level just isn't as much fun as frying his brain w/the LG. I would rather not walk around either, being a half-grapple-monkey;-)
What I am confused about is the fact that just b/c some fool decides to write an article comparing the FEATURES of KDE/Gnome/Whistler's main parts you seem to feel that the majority of people think that Linux is now easy enough to use on the desktop?
Personally, I hate and despise Gnome and KDE. They bother me. They really really do. They are terribly dirty and cluttered looking. I never liked the fact that you could have icons on your desktop to start up programs (Windows). I always put the damn things in folders as it was (too much shit on the desktop is just making it harder to find). I personally use Enlightenment. I don't care what anyone says about it not being stable or whatever, it works just fine for me. (I am not an inexperienced user, I know how to get things installed.) I use it b/c I can put whatever I want into a quick mouse button menu and bam, I am set to run my apps. For stuff that I am too damn lazy to add to the menu, my Xterm is right there as the first selection. I have no problem in typing in the command line and &.
*Most* Linux users realize that Linux is not ready for the desktop. It wasn't originally intended to be. It is getting there, slowly but surely. Someday it will be somewhere close to what it needs to be now, but does anyone really care? Do most of us think that we will ever beat Windows (or whatever it is in the future) on the desktop? Probably not.
I love Linux to death, I use it for everything. I only just recently reinstalled Windows on this machine to use an Intel Create and Share USB camera to do vid conferencing w/my parents. I cerntainly don't believe that the average person is going to be able to use it easily w/o modification or problems.
My parents use it daily, some for things that they don't realize, and some for things that they do. They still use Windows for a good majority of things b/c Linux is lacking in a lot of areas.
You need to understand that not all of us believe what the minority do. We have great faith in our beloved OS, but we don't advocate it to everyone.
this kind of bullshit has been going on since the beginning of time. German/French relations have always been at ods and this is just the French getting back at it one more time. Get over it guys. WWI and WWII is long over. The problems of the past are done w/. Mend old ties! DO NOT take this crap out onto the Internet, it isn't worth it, really.
The Internet is a place of free-trade and free-expression of ideas, not a battle ground over land expansion 50 - 75 years ago...
I have not used Photoshop on a G4, but I have used it on PowerPC's and G3's. It is NOT faster than my k6-2 350 or my 500+ (OC'd to fit in the 133mhz bus). In fact, it crashes a lot and it is rather annoying.
bah, rapidprototyping on a software product that was NEVER originally intended for how it is being used today. Nor was Napster I know, but they are making money on it.
It is a known fact that taking a step back in the development process can take a HUGE hit on development time. Who the hell wants to do that w/a product that has no intent to be released as an important project in the first place?
yes, but it is a widely known fact that BASIC is a poor language to get someone started on. It teaches poor everything:)
I wondered for a while if anyone really cared about programming anymore.. Would kids really want to sit there and write their own games or is it going to be mostly dorks like us that are reliving our C64 days?
Let's hope it opens up a new world for many kids:) They will actually get something more out of their blackbox than a brain tumor from sitting in front of Coolboarders99 for 16 hours a day:)
a lot of discussion yesterday (about a somewhat related topic) on the clock speed being elevated to the actual performance and how users will probably just go after what "looks" faster...
just b/c AMD has a faster chip for right now does NOT mean that they are going to win out in desktop market share. Like everyone is saying a lot of the code isn't P4 optimized and it is showing...
I really think that people are going to stick to Intel for now. It may not be the P4 but it will still be Intel. The CeleronII's are fast enough for what most people need (and are in the correct price range).
I honestly believe that most people are going to buy whatever comes in their systems from "such and such a store". If Intel can market this damn chip correctly (and I am sure that they are looking to b/c of the major fact that marketing made the push for the higher clock speed in the first place) it is going to be the bigger winner like always.
no the Alpha is slower b/c it is from 1993 and the fact that it is a known fact that it has an inflated clock speed... I wasn't comparing the two systems I was just listing their keys/s. Plus I wasn't really serious about using it:)
this is a very valid point. I have a system that runs all the applications that I need more than adequately. Even though I am college student taking some CS classes, paper writing, etc. I spend the majority of my CPU cycles checking email, IRC, AIM, etc. If I didn't run distributed stuff would I ever use more than 2% of my CPU? Probably not.
Problem is this: the man who dies w/the most toys wins..
A lot of people have a lot of money and are willing to buy systems w/it. They do it to beat the Jones.
Like someone said before, this was a marketing descision (to run up the clock speed but not the perfomance). People are going to rush towards the GHz machines just b/c of that.
yes, you guessed it... 99% of all text == "99% this or that" :)
I like that sort of data better than "which game runs faster, loko better". It actually showed solid proof that previously released hardware is just as good (if not better) than new stuff (DC vs PS2).

you people need to get over your political correctness and understand that it has more uses than sexual orientation and happiness.
