I like that sort of data better than "which game runs faster, loko better". It actually showed solid proof that previously released hardware is just as good (if not better) than new stuff (DC vs PS2).
If this was a product released by any other company (say Sega), would it have had the appeal that it does? The dreamcast never seemed to get really big. I always stuck to PS1 games..

I currently use WP8 as my WordProcessor of choice. I have never used (nor will I probably ever use) Framemaker. I didn't even know that Adobe had a WP.
I find it odd that they said that you will have to either use another version of FM to use your documents from the beta or convert them to text. I would think that a viable WP running on any non-Windows platform would have to be able to handle MS Word conversions in/out. WP8 doesn't handle this all that well but well enough that I can do what I need to w/it.
I couldn't say that MS is a competitor anyway... RH is tiny in comparisson to MS. Linux is gaining ground on Windows, but at least in the next several years will it even be close to being in competition w/MS.
sure! If @home even gave a shit about what their users do. I tried to report an @home user this summer for flooding my poor 56k connection and they ignored me. My ISP wouldn't give me a static IP to block it at the router, so I was basically screwed.

Linux may not be the OS choice for Desktops, but I really see it as an up-in-coming option on the handheld market. The apps at this point in time are scarce, but they shouldn't be hard to code (look at the availability of Palm apps).

funny thing is that the web now has interfaces for NNTP browsing that are in most cases more friendly than most USEnet programs (Deja News emails me my headliners from rec.music.gdead, I don't see 'tin' doing that).

what also confuses me is why we would want to use that sort of function to transfer data (audio/visual). FTP was always there for that, there is some use of HTTP to send large binaries, but mostly it is still done via FTP. That is after all what it was intended for.
I say we stick to the way things are. I don't find the Internet to be as slow as he apparently believes it to be. Change is usually good, but only forward progress... No sense in reverting back to things that were left in the past (for good reason).
even though this guy has valid points (I am not so sure about a 10k% increase in speed) I don't particularly like the idea of a return to Gopher. We moved away from Gopher for a reason. It was UGLY, it was UGLY, and it was OLD and UGLY. Yes, the Internet was ugly then, but Gopher looks much better in past thought.
The Internet is in an evolutionary stage. We started out w/old stuff and moved to much prettier things. Yes, Gopher could do the same sort of things, but honestly why change what works (they never do).

Personally, I hate and despise Gnome and KDE. They bother me. They really really do. They are terribly dirty and cluttered looking. I never liked the fact that you could have icons on your desktop to start up programs (Windows). I always put the damn things in folders as it was (too much shit on the desktop is just making it harder to find). I personally use Enlightenment. I don't care what anyone says about it not being stable or whatever, it works just fine for me. (I am not an inexperienced user, I know how to get things installed.) I use it b/c I can put whatever I want into a quick mouse button menu and bam, I am set to run my apps. For stuff that I am too damn lazy to add to the menu, my Xterm is right there as the first selection. I have no problem in typing in the command line and &.

My parents use it daily, some for things that they don't realize, and some for things that they do. They still use Windows for a good majority of things b/c Linux is lacking in a lot of areas.
You need to understand that not all of us believe what the minority do. We have great faith in our beloved OS, but we don't advocate it to everyone.

I have not used Photoshop on a G4, but I have used it on PowerPC's and G3's. It is NOT faster than my k6-2 350 or my 500+ (OC'd to fit in the 133mhz bus). In fact, it crashes a lot and it is rather annoying.

I really think that people are going to stick to Intel for now. It may not be the P4 but it will still be Intel. The CeleronII's are fast enough for what most people need (and are in the correct price range).
I honestly believe that most people are going to buy whatever comes in their systems from "such and such a store". If Intel can market this damn chip correctly (and I am sure that they are looking to b/c of the major fact that marketing made the push for the higher clock speed in the first place) it is going to be the bigger winner like always.
no the Alpha is slower b/c it is from 1993 and the fact that it is a known fact that it has an inflated clock speed... I wasn't comparing the two systems I was just listing their keys/s. Plus I wasn't really serious about using it:)
this is a very valid point. I have a system that runs all the applications that I need more than adequately. Even though I am college student taking some CS classes, paper writing, etc. I spend the majority of my CPU cycles checking email, IRC, AIM, etc. If I didn't run distributed stuff would I ever use more than 2% of my CPU? Probably not.
Problem is this: the man who dies w/the most toys wins..
A lot of people have a lot of money and are willing to buy systems w/it. They do it to beat the Jones.
Like someone said before, this was a marketing descision (to run up the clock speed but not the perfomance). People are going to rush towards the GHz machines just b/c of that.
