Jon and his group MoRE (Masters of Reverse Engineering) managed to break the encryption scheme, apparently intercepting the data as it passed through a piece of hardware unencrypted(due partially to a design error on the part of the hardware manufacturer)
go after them, they are the ones that were originally trusted w/the information and screwed up.
they are just trying to make an example of him. get a life MPAA.
I really don't understand the gaming programmers reluctance to move to Linux. w/the popularity of the Quake series, etc, etc, don't they see the market expanding?
I say forget about Office and other MS products, we need more serious games to be ported. Do you really think that people bought the Commodore64 so that they could write papers w/the GEOS word processor?
We dropped Alpha well before the Intel investment because we didn't have the resources to support Alpha and Intel on Linux. However, we're always exploring all of our options.
do I really want to feel like a "grapple monkey" while playing CTF. I don't think I would particularly want to feel like I am flying through the air from my flinging grappling hook. Marijuana/Beer + inner ear distortion + quake may not work too well;-)
I just don't understand how since *WE* are paying for the service, you can just deny it... I could see if the RESNET was a free service offered to students (but like I said in an earlier post that is sorta hidden heeh) I wouldn't mind them doing what they want w/the network. *I* pay about $20.25/month for the service, I feel that the *users* should decide what happens w/the network. It is here for the students, and the students put the money into it. It isn't a free world I understand, but if my ISP was blocking say IRC because "it stole bandwith" I would think that they would just add more to accomodate their users, afterall it is a business. RESNET's are no different. They are a business. They get money from the students, and offer a service.
so its the free ride that I think the univ's are complaining about.
University LAN connections are NOT free here at BGSU (I don't know about other universities). I pay about $160/yr ($20.25/month) for my "technology fee" -- which is for dorm residents only and it is to pay for the LAN connection.
really doesn't make sense to me. I don't see how they can take something of yours and be under no obligation to give it back. Like they really need to sell this equipment off at auctions to make more money...
recently there have been many articles in our campus newspaper about the speed of the network being slowed by MP3 transfers (not really, but they have to make an excuse for the poor technology). They are apparently blocking all access to Napster servers (or ports I really don't know). I recieve a "no route to host" error when I try to connect now.
I really think that in order for Napster to live on they are going to have either allow for random ports or a lot of people are going to have to start setting up servers:)
are you not allowed to make copies of your own media for yourself? Isn't that part of the law? Like software, you are allowed to make a personal backup copy for yourself... Is this just a item by item law, or is it a general thing? Cause this seems to me to be breaking a long standing tradition of allowing people to make copies of what they want for their own use...
well, it is their fault really... I mean, they had to have known this was going to happen at one point or another. But for the length of time it took them to act on this shit, I really don't think they thought about this ahead of time. Bad move on their part.

umm, Microsoft ignored it, ridicules it, fights it (w/W2k I guess), I wonder if we will have a PenguinMicrosoft Baby-Bill... Hmm.
they're trying to stop reverse-engineering and black-box everything
of course they are... They don't like the fact that there are actually people out there working to do things their OWN way, and letting other people see this work.
it is really their fault though, they are the ones that made it extremely easy to crack. Hell, they should be going after Xing and busting them for not protecting the key.
what does prosecuting him do for these people? Do they really think that what he did is going to cause any serious problems? If anything, it allowed others to expand DVD into realms that would not have been possible otherwise (basically b/c of stupidity on the parts of companies not supporting Linux/BSD). I really am beginning to wonder about the future of the world if they are going to persecute people for doing really ingenious things.
I personally believe that they are more mad that he cracked it, and because of it being easy to crack the other keys they are embarassed;)
this bit about the banning use of the networks to educational use is obvious bullshit. you live in a dorm and you pay rent. here at BGSU, you have to pay for the Internet connection as well (about $20.25/month if you really figure it out) you are renting services (including this visitation shit). AFAIK since you are renting, you can't have a surprise inspection w/o a warrant, you can't have the RA's just walk in (unless the door is open), etc. They would have to change a lot of things to allow something like this to happen. The Internet connection would have to be a perk of going to school there (and paid for by the taxpayers) if they wanted to be able to control it. It won't happen.
they won't even let you take Everclear on board a plane for fear of explosion... Do I really want to be smoking in the airplane lav and have my laptop explode and force me to give up my ability to have kids? No thanks:) NiCAD's and LI's sound safest to me:)

my bad, the prior post about AMD didn't show up when I wrote this hehe.
We dropped Alpha well before the Intel investment because we didn't have the resources to support Alpha and Intel on Linux. However, we're always exploring all of our options.
;)
hmm, no response about AMD though. Hmmm
Students here pay about $12 a semester for a "technology fee"
$12 compared to $160 is not even close.
and a bottle of Jack D -- forgot that :( hehe
would a good practical joke to move from putting a banana in the tail pipe to putting a bottle of aspirin in the gas tank? hehe

I want to know why that was a flamebait as well. I really don't think it was deserving of that moderation...
;-)
:)
It was showing how we *need* this sort of thing to expand Napster and beat out the Universities
Probably a BGSU admin

it is more of a revolving door...
MSFT -> company that tries to steal domain -> MSFT -> bastards trying to persecute hackers for cracking stuff -> MSFT -> etc.
did he name his Pilot Rosy Palmer?
;-)

A mobile phone and two computers were also taken.
gotta love that mobile phone being able to crack DeCSS and allow those people to "copy" DVD's. Sometimes I wonder...
