yeah, but that is why we have Windows. I don't *personally* feel that Linux needs to merge into the "typical" household. Improve on Linux and make it easier to use, but it should still require some sort of basic understanding of the system to use or we will become limited in the same ways that Windows has become limited...
"I also notice the fact that we're starting to get distribution specific tools"
yeah, my biggest complaint about that sort of thing is the fact that they don't understand the concept of kernel config. They think that it is like Windows, and you have to upgrade like once a year ("where can I get the new version of Linux (RedHat)")
I started w/Slackware and a lot of text editing. Even though we do need the simple installs (I hated having to reinstall 7x my first try to get it the way I wanted (back then PCMCIA ethernet installs were not that easy) but I feel that it is still necessary to know some of the basics (most distributions don't come w/any security enabled) so that they can learn what the hell to do when their boxen break...
This scares me. I don't personally believe that Linux is an OS that should allow for absolutely no background knowledge of the OS. There are a lot of things that a user should know. Windows (9x+) scares me. I don't like the feeling that I am not in control (The GUI is taking more control than the prompt). I am afraid of that happening w/Linux.
I used to help newbies on IRC all the time. They don't understand the concept of "real work" to get things up and running. They think everything should be point and click, and it shouldn't be. I am old school perhaps, but you should at least have some sort of conceptual model of the system (and a command line interface helps build that model).
We need to have easy to use systems, but they don't need to be in the "For Dummies" category...
Mozilla's binaries are only downloaded and tested by geeks
I don't agree, there will be *someone* that will write an article (in mass computer media) that will talk about the beta version of the upincoming Netscape Navigator 6.0, and you know that it is going to get a shitty review (basically b/c it was an Open Source project and people have been known to be jackasses about it). They are looking for competition w/IE, and this current version gives no advantages over IE (as far as speed is concerned -- which IMHO is most important). Personally, I could give two flying shits about skins, or IM, etc. I want the pages to load (Java and normal) FAST. I bought a SMP machine so that things would be FAST, not slow like my i386 was...
personally I don't see any point to the Netscape 6.0 release... There is NO reason that they should be releasing a browser in that condition. It was slow (on a Dual 400mhz Celeron w/128mb of ram), it doesn't goto a "correct" fullscreen mode, etc.
I realize that this is a pre-release, but.. You must remember that there are people out there that are going to look at this and say, "blah blah IE is better, blah blah, Netscape sucks." and not care to even see the final version.
here at BGSU they deny all incoming connections to resnet boxen so any identd requests are denied and MANY IRC servers won't allow you to connect (and #linux on efnet won't let you join w/a ~username@)
yeah, there are ways around it, but I honestly don't believe that the benefits of blocking the connections (Napster) are more abundant than not doing so...
IRC is a part of the Internet. Block http and only allow your users to use your proprietary fucking browser and see how your userbase will dwindle... I don't understand ISP's sometimes.
not adding the grapple (into stock Q3CTF) has ruined the game for me and many others. I know of MANY people from the Q1CTF fame that refuse to play Q3 b/c of this. I don't think poorly of him, but what he did was severely hurt the Q3CTF community by a personal choice forced on 4 years of CTF.
... is why the fuck they are even doing this? It isn't for political reasons, it isn't for money, it isn't for fun. Packeting popular websites is worthless. I sometimes wonder why people do the things they do. Go out and get high or something, stop being a bunch of dumb fucks and do something productive. </rant>
my mother used to work for a salt company in PA. During the winter months it was sometimes too hard (or even against the law) to travel in the snow, so her company gave her a PC+modem to do her work from home...
it was in our house for probably about two years. during those two years I don't believe that they once checked what was on the machine, or if she used it for any personal use.
I think that most people are paranoid about that sort of thing, but to be honest, do you think that Ford really thinks that an employee is going to start an email about a "sickout" on a company computer? I would think that the safest method to plan one of those ordeals would be word-of-mouth...
Let's stop worrying about the fact that your company may be able to track your Internet usage, emails, etc, and look at the bright side... They will be opening up possibilities for families of young children that normally would not have had access to have access to the Internet...
My point was that the more intelligent folk tend to do psychedelics and mind-expanders, the less intelligent folk tend to do stimulants and downers, and everyone does weed. At least, that's been my experience.
it has been exactly my experience as well. I am not into hacking so much, but I do a lot of quaking, IRC, and general chat... I couldn't beleive the amount of people on IRC that smoke daily.. When they say that 8 million smoke pot on a daily basis, it just was mind boggling...
In high-school I would read threads about pot smoking in college and not believe that someone would smoke pot, roll, and do acid all in the same night... I come to college and start raving on E and pot all the time... I learned half the stuff I know about drugs from the Internet and BBS life... Amazing how it can effect your life.
Nobody wants to pay $5000 for a laptop, even if it has 32-day uptimes:)
I bought a Dell laptop in December of 1997 (a p133 Latitude). Had Linux running on it until the summer of 1999. I would have uptimes usually of 55 days or so (before I would have to shut it down and move it). So even when it wasn't fully supported it was still a good machine.
I know I would feel more confident in purchasing a laptop from a company like VA who has a vested interest in Open Source, and Linux inparticular, than I would buying from Dell.
as much as I like supporting Open Source, I like supporting "not" Open Sourcing my Wallet. If I am going to pay $500+ less for a machine from Dell (which is going to have the same shit as VA), then I am going to go w/the cheaper buy. In most cases, a computer is a computer no matter who is selling it. If LinuxCare certified it, I can trust them enough to say it is ok enough to use.
like everyone says, they will do anything that will force them into new markets... A version of the Windows Media Player for *nix (even Linux) won't hurt them any in the long run (like if they ported over Office2k). It is just going to allow people to see more of MS everywhere. Like a big advertisement everytime you play a.asf:)
unfortunatly not all of us use Windows, I don't even think of installing it. Also, I am talking about the fact that when I hit the button, it will turn off -- it is in fact a machine, and I am a human. I have control over what it does. If I want the fucking machine to turn off, it will. Frustrating that people have to force things to work against you...
I want to know why this was moderated down? It is a very good question... If it weren't for them, this whole thing would not have been possible. I want to know what he thinks about this.
Consumers are too stupid to understand all those options, you see, and they might mess things up, so the "unnecessary" options are all stripped out.
No, Bill Gates just makes everyone feel that the rest of the computer consumer world is stupid. He wants to make everything so "idiot-proof" that you can't do anything.
I really hate the fact that most PC's now won't turn off when you push the power button. When I want the god damn machine to turn off, I don't expect to have to pull the cord from the back. Obviously this was for the "idiots" who kept mistaking their power key for the Zip disk eject button.;-)
what do you think about Xing being the cause of all this, do you think that they should be prosecuted/fined b/c they were the original reason for your being able to find the solution to the puzzle?
hmm, I am a "fucking retard". You are the pansy that won't show his name b/c you not only have a computer screen between you and I, but also an anonymous post.
the commercial w/the monkey and the mentally challanged person was atrocious. I think that they should give 100x the amount they spent on that commercial to organizations that support the mentally retarded. That was an outrade. I am VERY disappointed.
there is no other method to install a MESA visual plugin other than RPM. The RPM is built against the XMMS 1.0.0 RPM (which wouldn't install due to another lib dependancy that I didn't feel like chasing down) so AFAIK if you didn't install the XMMS RPM you can't use the XMMS MESA plugin to do some cool fullscreen stuff:(

it is a great "My First Linux," so to speak.

any way to get around that $22/mo (like cancelling or something) and still get your DC? :)
that wasn't the point. Why even post shit like that?

remincescant of the furry dog that he converted his truck into. look what they traded that in for...
sorry, but my dual 400 is not going to get traded in for a C64 no matter how I love nostalgia
