I'm a definite geek but I don't understand why intelligent people are interested in crap cartoons intended for little kids.
Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend - ages 3 & up. (For those who haven't seen it, it has all the good ingredients for Anime: violence, demons and various acts of sexual assault and/or perversity.)
On the live action front, if you can catch The Weather Woman I highly recommend it. Kung-fu, panties, huge amounts of female masturbation, and an over the top supernatural combat climax.
Take a glance at medieval weaponry and you'll see that even weapons -- objects used essentially for their utility -- portray a tremendous sense of style on the part of their owners and craftsmen.
As with all things, when the base design cannot be improved the art of embelishment comes to the fore.
As for weapons, a highly decorated sword/gun/pointy stick was a status symbol. You don't seriously think that some disgusting peasant could afford those sorts of things?
A computer case is just a box. The basic functional shape/size of a computer has been static for quite some time. Guess what happens next?
He even asks if OSS supporters have "ever heard of capitalism?"
Those fucking open source commies! When will they learn freedom can't be shared, it has to be paid for by every man, woman and child. Preferably in US dollars, oil, or the blood of foreigners.
It's like sitting in the front row at the theatre, the screen is just way too big.
Filmed in glorious puke-o-vision. Seriously, sit in the very front row of any cinema when there is a high movement scene and you will know what I am talking about.
I agree wholeheartadly, but the points you're making here show a lack of understanding of the broader security picture.
My point is: Microsoft cannot completely dump the responsibility for it's software flaws at the feet of users.
Whilst user education is never unwelcome in my book, the fact of the matter is that it will be wasted on most users. SMEs frequently have no inhouse IT - they are focussed on business problems, not IT maintenance issues. And I don't think that there is much point bringing up end users (the ones that Compaq included the 'any key' FAQ entry for).
Poor coding by Microsoft is the root problem, but saying "the users need to be educated" and "quiet please, security professionals" is not my idea of a fix.
Microsoft costs us real money - in my organisation our B2B system accounts for 90-95% percent of our turnover. We have a firewall, antivirus software on everything, our systems are patched as soon as humanly possible, and we take great pains to ensure that the system is as secure as possible. But we still got hammered by all the worms and viruses - either externally via increased traffic or (on one occasion) inside the organisation. It is the underlying infrastructure that is at fault - the foundations are rotting.
We aren't uneducated, we're doing everything by the book - and still we're having problems. Don't tell me we should be doing more - Microsoft should be doing more. They have *multi-billion* dollar turnover, don't you think that some of that money could be devoted to QA on their own products?
... He recognizes
the fatal user flaw of not applying patches and introduced an educational
plan to help correct this. Also included in his statement was a response
about computer researchers who publish flaws in Microsoft products, 'I
wish those people just would be quiet.'
Who's Ballmer's public speaking coach? Hats off to them anyway, I don't think I've heard something that manages to be simultaneously so wrong and inflammatory at the same time.
The end of the article gives
unbiased coverage of some people's opinions about the latest
announcement.
Here's my biased opinion, based on the fact that I have wasted countless hours cleaning up after outlook viruses at work - Steve, it's time that your organisation started to take some responsibility for it's lousy product.
Is it ethical to systematically buy out or destroy their competition? To deliberately spoil users' experience for the sake of market share? To use their massive cash pile and their monopoly in one field to (try to) gain it in others?
At the risk of being attacked by patriots...
Perhaps I am taking this the wrong way, but I see Microsoft as an apex of American business evolution. They are only a product of the environment in which they operate.
All of the above complaints have everything to do with Microsoft's bottom line - they didn't get rich by being nice (or for that matter, smart), they got rich by exterminating any threats to their business by any means possible.
Everyone seems happy to complain how evil they are but no one wants to do anything about root cause of the problem. The system in which they operate is not built to reward ethical behaviour.
Cripes, look at who's in charge of America, is it any wonder that Microsoft operates unchecked. Ethics are not something that American government has a working concept of, why would Microsoft try to work in an ethical manner if the government doesn't even know what that is. The rot goes deep.
Microsoft is not a charity, why are people expecting them to act like one?
My old boss had a 'Shayne' file, which is the name of the MD.
The 'Shayne' file was actually 5 folders. When the MD made a request, it went in the first file. When the MD asked about how it was going, it got moved to next folder, and so on. When it hit the last folder, my boss would actually do something about it. It cut down on about 95% of his requests.
'Cause you know they're going to take a page from George Lucas and whore the titles like he did with Star Wars.
So what? At least it doesn't have any footage shot by Lucas since he started to smoke crack (or did you think that Jar Jar Binks was the result of a normal human mind?)
I'll personally be buying the Matrix complete whore bag edition.
What never ceases to amaze me is that creationists are repelled by evolution. What could be more proof of the existance of a god than a huge, complex, adaptive system incorporating all the different kinds of life?
Why aren't I switching to Linux? Perhaps because it's virtually unusable.
I am like many people, I don't want to have to learn (too) much to use my computer. I certainly don't want to have to fight with my computer.
Confusing interfaces, appalling (or nonexistant) help, lack of constistancy and lack of (real, not confusing) support are some of the reasons that I don't switch.
Linux is not about mainstream acceptance, it's about geek pride - which is why, in it's current form it will never go anywhere other than servers and geek machines.
If it doesn't run Doom, Quake, et al. then I really don't care.

I actually dry retched when I read this.
It's never too late to turn your life around.
The bible is propaganda - it only works if it is freely available.
Besides, the goal is to own your entire life. Spreading the poison just helps the cause.
Hmmm, yes. Where are they now?
Whinge as much as you like about x86. It's here and it works. End of story.

God bless America and all who sail in her.
Does a speak-n-spell count?

Really, because it looks like it's in SCO's policies and procedures manual.
Yeah, well how 'bout you find the degenerate scumbags who thought up sitefinder and kick 'em in the nuts. That ought to do it.

It's surprising that she can speak so clearly with her mouth full.
There are plenty of worse keywords. (use your imagination to fill in the blanks)

I pity people with so little vision.
This is what happenend in Australia with Optus cable - they introduced caps to deal with this.
Internet whores like myself had to turn to other providers when the caps came in.

Now that's just taking all the elegance away from the language. Shame on you.
You'd think the RIAA could at least spend the money on some decent brainwashing - it's not like the stuff doesn't exist.
That dirty terrorist! Isn't it enough that he's infected my computer with viruses - now he wants to give me malaria!
