  1. Try a cross-platform framework on Ask Slashdot: Swift Or Objective-C As New iOS Developer's 1st Language? · · Score: 1

I'm currently writing a project using Xamarin ( http://xamarin.com/ ). Did the Objective-C thing at a previous job for about 6 months. C# is way way better than Objective-C, and you get the added bonus of being able to reuse your business logic (and even some of your UI depending on how you write it) across platforms. There is some overhead in learning the apis through C# instead of Obj-C, but its more than made up for by a better language and cross-platform reuse of code. Not as many examples of how to use apis in C#, but, for the most part, its pretty trivial to translate things from Obj-C. The worst bit is that existing third-party libraries are substantially harder to use. You do have to pay for a license for apps over a certain size, but its only $25/mo for an indy developer.

  2. Samsung's objection is absurd on Judge Overrules Samsung Objection To Jury Instructional Video · · Score: -1

I know I'm going to look foolish for saying this, but I actually watched part of the video (enough to know how apple products are portrayed)! The apple product in the video is being used to file for a patent. There is _nothing_ in the video about patents owned by apple, or patents involving apple products. The suggestion by Samsung that the video biases jurors is absurd.

  3. Why post? on Online! The Book · · Score: -1, Offtopic

Was it really a good idea to give such a crummy book a whole post to itself? It seems to me that it would have been much more productive to just have a post about bad books or something more general.

  6. Usefulness on End of The Von Neumann Computing Age? · · Score: 1

I think a lot of you are correct. This computer certainly isn't very useful for a lot of things. One such thing is personal computing. I doubt these computers will be in homes anytime in the next fifty years. That does't prevent them from having a number of industrial uses. The examples in one of the articles talked about industrial use. I think this is where they would be most useful. Complexe computing is not exactly a "home computing" type thing.

  8. BANNED? on U.S. Forces In Iraq Ban GPS Phones · · Score: 5, Interesting

Why were these phones allowed in the first place? Wouldn't it have made more sense to simply give them a list of things they CAN take rather than giving them a list of things they can't take and possibly missing something?

  9. Re:Fluid motion on Robots! · · Score: 2, Interesting

That would be cool if it could have fluid motion and balancing. On the other hand, this is probably not really an option at the moment or even the near future. The market must be very small for so expensive an item (the article says it will cost as much as a luxury car), and if they added something like fluid motion etc. the robot would leave the price-range of a car and enter the price-range of something like a house or possibly even more. The idea is cool, but its not really a possibility for a long time.

  10. Re:Tetris? on Top Ten Dying Game Genres · · Score: 1

I agree. While at lot of hard-core gamers no longer play, a lot of others play it a lot. Tetris may not addict gamers, but it sure addicts other people. There are lots of non-gamers types on my floor who are addicted to tetris but never play anything else.
