  1. This is stupid... on Butterfly Unlocks Evolution Secret · · Score: 1

I can only imagine an old fart whom totally wasted his life coming up with theories that are worshipped by other farts and/or fart wannbes. "We can't really tell you shit about the human body or how it works, we have no idea how to cure diseases that have been around for a few thousand years, we have these little papers with little lines coming out from a machine that maps your DNA but we can't really tell you what it is that you are looking at. We have a few million people dying from AIDS and cancer every year but this is not something that we should really look into because we are very busy with this theory about everything. The theory is just genius shit, we figured out that we all come from aminoacids and chaos. We can't prove shit and when things don't match we make them up but the important thing is that we have this brilliant theory. We should give someone the Noble prise about this shit because it's just fantastic shit."

  2. Nokia 6100 on Minimalist Cell Phones? · · Score: 1

http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,,4377,00.html I own one for over a year and it's superb. The lightest, smallest phone built by Nokia in the last 3-4 years. It doesen't have a camera or a lot of memory. It has color screen but it's not very good and it has java, wap, advanced address book. Other things that it has is GPRS and IRDA. These last two are really handy sometimes, trust me. The battery is 3-5 days now and it was 5-7 days. I'm a minimalist fan but not a fanatic. 6100 is a perfect balance between what you can get for a very small size. I don't miss features such as camera, mp3 player, radio or a ton of memory. That's not to say that I wouldn't find them nice to be had, flash memory especially, but I choosed this phone because, for this size, I considered it to be packed with essential features.

Who knows, maybe we'll be the PSP someday and we'll be able to stick things in each others for something more then sex.

Intel is a very very oportunistic company where the sole driving force is to make as much profit as possible. This may not be a bad thing in theory but in practice it's ugly as shit to se this kind of monster, a souless zombie. Now, because they are in bed with Apple it means that Intel wants something. We have Steve on a big scene being a good father for all the Apple kids but it should be very clear that this thing is happening because Intel wants to. What does it want? More money. How? They need some soul and Apple has plenty. Intel hopes to push some blood in it's cheeks with Apple, especially now when it's image is very bad compared to AMD in the all-profitable high-end arena so they want to ensure the masses and the masses are marketing frags.
The sad thing here is the fact that the more Intel succedes with this move, the more we'll see Microsoft being pushed towards AMD and we all hate Microsoft and love AMD and we want it to remain like that. The good thing could be that if Intel makes 25% - 30% room in the desktop OS garden for a second choice from Apple this will mean that between Apple and Microsoft there will be an 20% gap, easy fillable by a third choice: Linux. This could be very very good, but I spy a big surprise from Microsoft with it's .NET Framework running on both Linux and Os X.
    The good times are coming.

  8. Better options on Logitech Cordless Desktop LX500 and LX700 Showdown · · Score: 1

There are better options, like the MX3100 Desktop. The only difference between MX3100 and LX700 is the mouse, a MX1000 laser mouse on the former. That is a big difference. I bought MX3100 about one mounth ago for home use and I am impressed by how unobtrusive it is. The overall feeling is very good despite some inconveniences.
I really like the absence of the red light on the mouse and the very fast response and accuracy. It is much better at accuracy and ergonomics then MX500. MX1000's buttons are better placed but the click wheel requires some getting used to for use as a middle button because now it also rocks from side to side for lateral scrolling. MX1000's base is wider then MX500's with better support for the thumb. Before buying it I heard that MX1000 is a heavy mouse because of the integrated lithium battery and I must say that this is bullshit. The mouse is smaller and lighter then MX500 whom I consider to be a tad too big for my hands and I don't have small hands, quite the opposite I would say. Other ass kickers are: the battery holding for 3 weeks, the green lights for the power meter and the rechargeability on the base station.
The keyboard is good with soft and distinct response on the keys, F# keys are very small and shitty but you get used to that and the only really bad thing is the new shape of the DEL, PGUP, PGDWN, etc. keys but it's not as bad as it is on those keyboards where these keys are right above the arrows keys and right below the power buttons (stupid morons). 2 AA batteries are supposed to last 4-6 mounths which is more then ok with me.
On my work PC I have a corded MX500 and a corded Desktop Navigator Special Edition since about 1 year and I'm very happy with them. Considering that I only use MX3100 at home for 2h/day in average I can't say that this would be a good choice for the PC at work but it sure is relaxing for home use and the best thing is that you don't have to give up frag accuracy to go wireless. Because I am also a cheap MF, I also like the fact that I only have to buy 2 AA batteries once every 4 mounths to power MX3100.

    Run Forest run.

  9. Re:And its no HUGE breakthrough on battery life. on Samsung Announces Flash-Based Disk Drive · · Score: 2, Interesting

The HDD eats, in average, 20% from a notbook's battery power. A (50% estimated / 70% claimed) more power efficient HDD, such as the flash based, eats only 10% / 6% battery power. This means that if your notebook currently runs for 3 hours it would run for 18 / 25 more minutes with a flash drive. It's not such a ball breaker especially if you consider the $/Mb. It would save more battery if it would generate less heat but flash chips tend to get quite hot so this product may be good only for niche markets for starters.

  10. Nothing beats paper on Seeking a Good eBook Reading Device? · · Score: 1

I've looked for the same device for two years now and my conclusion is that nothing beats a laser printer and a big pile of A4 sheets.

Laptop - A desktop replacement is out of question, a portable one (Centrino) is way too big and an ultraportable one is amazingly expensive and still too big. Plus, you can't use a notbook in places where you wan't to just chill and read something because you will look like a moron and you will be forced to stay in the classic desktop position.

Tablet PC - Nice ideea, nice design (Compaq), a bit bulky but otherwise a good device for reading. Much better then a notebook. Unfortunately in Romania this things are extremely expensive. They start at 1500 euro (2000$). I don't know how long the battery can hang on but otherwise this device seems to be the best choice.

PDA - Way too small, you can't make electronic notes on the document you read, very limited processing resources, stupid user interface, pretty expensive for what it offers in the reading area.

Laser printer, A4 paper sheets - It's a pretty inexpensive solution and there are only two things that you need in order for it to work. The first one is to have some kind of ideea on what you want to read. We're talking books here so if you want to just browse things out you can do that on your desktop's LCD. The second one is to keep your printed books ordered in cabinet files. You can print out just a few chapters from one or more books and read those. When you're done you move to the next chapter and you file the previous in cabinets. At the end of any book you'll have you're own copy with annotations, stains and shit. It shure helps my photografic memory.

If you really want to stay with an electronic device my guess is that a Tablet PC is as good as it gets but it's too expensive so that it justifies it's only purpose. However the best way to read books is printing them out even though it can be a challenge to format CHM files :). The only downside to this method is the fact that you must be a little organised because it is already more expensive to print your own book then it is to get a printed copy and the only justification for doing so is the fact that you will actually read it. This chapter by chapter printing techinque can also help keep you focused on what you're reading and even though at a page level the cost is higher than a tipographic printed copy, the fact that you pay only for what you read can be more cost efective on the long run.

the obsession with bit2bit copies is motivated by the same reason behind the obsession that your ver. 2.1 product is now obsolete and needs to be replaced with the ever more cool 2.1.2 product.

this new product is always "the ultimate" as in "we were so stupid until now but we really got it right this time. we don't know the concept of upgrade and if you bought our shit until know we sincerely trust you're stupid to do so from now on even though we all know that each new time you buy you only pay 10% for new things we added and 90% for shit you already had and hence payed for but hey we always hungry"

DRM is really a piece of shit. the reason it exists is the following:

    • piratable product's builders realized that their inability to control the price in whatever way they want is a fat killer. they need to aquire non-piratable status in order to be able to ask for a product much more then it's worth.
    • scince they clearly see that it is not posible through software only they're trying to create a new generation of hardware that will be able to constrain any software to their will. this is a very dangerous point in the evolution of hardware and I hope that buyers will give this new Sony, Creative etc. hardware the same fate that Intel's identification methode in the CPU recived.

imagine that a matter duplicator existed and that you would be able to duplicate hardware (this includes food and women too :)).i don't think that there is a greater nightmare for all the fat people. imagine how it would be to do not need them anymore and instead only need the smart people, the talented people.

i think it is worth fighting for fat's death through fighting against DRM so i'll give either a big NO or a big Fuck you (*) i know a way around (**)! to any DRM enabled product.

I guess there is no hope to see this baby fixed until a mjor new version emerges (2.0?).
