    Only problem is that diagnostic FEE they charge which is usually the bulk of the difference between the dealership and the little guy shop.

    There are other ways to get the same effect:

    - playing music while working
    - going for a brisk walk (not heavy sport, because that tires you out)
    - smoking a joint (depends on the person but for many people this does the trick)
    - playing a game (solitaire?)

    I used to work with a programmer who thought the same way. Do you have any idea of what a pain in the ass it is to fix bugs in code that is joint and or booze inspired? Easier to just take the spec and re-write it from scratch.

    Be honest now. Did they suspend you for "hacking" or did they smack you down for being rude and insolent to the teacher?

    There is a big differnce between what the kid in the article did and what you did.

    I don't know about you, but I am tired of being held hostage by the words "If it could save just one life, it would be worth it."

    I was watching a special on railroad crossings. A man was lobbying for all railroad crossings to be double gated to prevent people from dying while snaking through single gated crossings. His pitch was that the substantial cost was more than offset by the lives that would be saved.

    I'd rather not spend that tax money. I'm okay with those people dying.

    Maybe you should recheck the definition of evolution. Part of the problem is that you seem to believe that signal fidelity is the driving factor. If it were, then yes, downloadable formats are usually of a much lower quality than a compact disc. Following that back a step, a compact disc is still of a lower quality than high-end equipment and vinyl.

    But wait, maybe it is the wrong metric. If we look at distribution, a CD is smaller, less fragile, and less prone to vibration induced errors than an LP. MP3 players are smaller yet and even less prone to vibration induced errors. With fewer moving parts, I imagine they are less fragile as well.

    I'm not suggesting we should become a police state or anything, just that perhaps we need to take the world as it stands today and re-write parts of the constitution with this in mind.

    I can live with less "rights" provided I'm safe and secure.

    Linux is cute little Jerry. SCO is Tom, who has no chance of catching the nimble litte Jerry. In fact, Tom chases Jerry around a corner and almost runs smack into the big bull dog, IBM. The smart thing to have done, would be for Tom to back away quietly, BUT NO. Tom starts trying to whack Jerry with a two-by-four. Tom has already hit the bulldog a couple of times, sooner or later, it's going to get up and beat the crap out of that stupid cat.

    Almost but not quite. Produce two different resignation letters. One giving two weeks notice. The other terminating your employment immediately. Clean out all your personal crap before taking the letters to the right person, you may not get to come back for it later. In person, tell them you are leaving the company. You then negotiate the severance. Get what you want, you give them the one with the two weeks.

    The break up of the bell monopoly wasn't about increased customer service. Which is good, as service levels are an order of magnitude less. It is about price. Competition drives pricing down. It also increases innovation. If the old bell monopoly was still intact, we wouldn't have DSL service but ISDN might be rolling out sometime in the next two decades, and you would pay by the byte.

    Competition = customer service down + prices down + innovative service additions up.

    I hate to ask the blindingly obvious, but if you have a roll of this super sticky tape how do you un-roll it?

    How about the same way the gecko does? I remember reading in the article where they discovered how the whole gecko hair thing worked, that changing the angle of the hair released it's "stickyness".
