"Audio quality is as good as the mp3/whatever encoding he uses - as long as the processor can keep up, and yes, all the iPod processors keep up."
The encoding quality is not the end of the story. The resultant audio quality is ultimately limited by the DACs (Digital to Analog Converter) in the device.
This has always been a limiting factor of the iPod line. Competitive players such as Creative's Zen series sound noticeably better than any iPod I've heard because of better DACs. So for Mossberg to say that it, "sounded as good as any other iPod" is not a good thing in my opinion.
I've been following this new slowdown problem on my Half-Life 2 Stuttering Page. I am experiencing this issue as well and have received many reports of others with this problem.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 remedies this with a boot-time firewall profile that is enforced on startup. This profile blocks all network traffic other than critical services like DHCP until the normal firewall profile has loaded.
I've been running the same install of Windows XP on my home-built PC since XP originally went gold nearly 4 years ago.
It has been through three motherboard upgrades with three different chipsets (BX -> 850 -> 875P), the install drive has been imaged and upgraded multiple times and it has survived system file corruption due to bad RAM.
To this day the system is solid as a rock, and is used for everything from software development and gaming, to acting as my home music studio. It's unfortunate that the answer to so many people's computer problems is throw up their hands and say, "Welp, Windows sucks, I guess it's time to format again!". The NT kernel is very stable when given quality components and basic maintenance practices.

Or simply turn on the firewall that has been a part of Windows XP since it was released in 2001.
In Service Pack 2, Microsoft has enabled the firewall by default which is now included with every PC sold by major OEMs.

I have posted an analysis of this issue with some performance graphs illustrating the problem and have forwarded it all to Valve.
