try explaining to the PHB why it takes 5 days to install the operating system. if he's your average office type, he won't believe you. if he's a compiler engineer, he really won't believe you.
VMWare is an unbelievably outstanding product. a couple of the labs here on campus run it on top of RH7 for MS Access (cringe), while the machines continue running their Linux-based neural modeling software without interruption. my personal experience with it has been that it's a rock-solid, very efficient way to run multiple OS'es on a single hardware box.
deploy an installation image to multiple 'machines'... install from ISO images on HD... bridged, NAT'ed, even local-only networking... hell, it emulates sound hardware! I know a guy that even got a Longhorn beta running on VMWare;-)
...and while MS's VPC Server product isn't yet available, VMWare's GSX Server product is available right now. VMWare's stuff is *well* worth the price of entry.
No, VMWare runs Linux very well, but VMWare does not run on OSX, whereas VirtualPC will. there was a great deal of concern that VirtualPC would not be able to run Linux, thus the story.
personally, I find this announcement somewhat foreboding, as it hints that MS may threaten to displace VMWare as the machine virtualization software of choice -- if VMWare goes under... well, VirtualPC may be able to *run* Linux, but it will be a cold day in Redmond before VirtualPC runs *on* Linux.
FWIW, a 40-part melody is extremely rare even in complex orchestral music, and most polyphonic ('zat the word y'r looking for?) ringtones are doing no more than 8-part polyphony.
personally, I find all cell rings annoying, but the crappy lo-depth, lo-samplerate wavetable synths in the new flashy fones are far more annoying to me than the old single-line sawtooth licks we heard a couple of years ago.
there's something to be said for embedding a unique 'communication' in the musical signal of a cell phone ring - it's like a bell tower ring, not a goddamned car radio. blasting some fully-orchestrated rendition of 'sunday bloody sunday' whenever a call comes in is just plain tacky compared to a little 4-tone sine ditty.
Hop-on has secured multiple disposable-cell-phone patents from the STX patent collection. These patents have an effective filing date back to December 1995, which we believe predates all other patents directed to disposable cell phone technology. These patents include very broad claims directed to a method of operating a disposable cell phone with pre-programmed minutes. The patents further strengthen our competitive advantage, barring entry into the market by other companies."
Now I have iTunes (for Mac) and an iPod. I don't see why I would want anything else?
well, you may not have thought of it, but some of us would just like to be able to mount/dev/ipod/ipod and not deal with any eye-crushing clickety clack.
apple doesn't want me to be able to do that. oh well. their loss.
are there actually people who can write FASTER than they can type?
gimme a keyboard any day over some flashy handwriting crap. a tablet with no keyboard is nice in the showroom & a paperweight by the time it's hit the parking lot.
People who grew up on Macs aren't used to the "tree" concept of filesystem management. They don't expect various levels of the filesystem to display in different columns of the same window. More importantly, they don't expect to have to scroll sideways. That was never a part of the Mac navigation scheme until OSX, the Classic Finder was deep as opposed to lateral.directories.
alright. welcome to the world of the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard.
this is how we do it now. get used to it or go/home.
I'm sure Luskin's case is unjustified. this does not change the fact that it would please me immensely to see a blogger suffer the consequences of flooding the internet with drivel.
I hope this guy wins. It's high time bloggers learned that you can't just go posting whatever the hell you want all day long on the public internet with impunity.
If Microsoft decides to end the trial, you can access the restricted documents and e-mail for at least three months, as long your.NET Passport is active.
that's very true. but a kludge is better than nothing:-) I certainly dont look forward to using Windows device drivers, but hey... at least it's an option now.
I used Linuxant's HCF Modem drivers under Red Hat 8 for a long time -- when 9 shipped, there was a change in kernel threading vs. 2.4.18. it would have been nice to have even a hacked-up wrapper during the 2 weeks while the new modules were hammered out. wrappers like DriverLoader may yet give Linux the jump it needs on hardware support
kudos to Marc Boucher et al for another clever hack!

and sadly...

FYI fedora users:
export CC=gcc32
then run nvidia installerz
"X" is a traditional abbreviation for "cross" or "trans" for example "xref" or "xmit".

I wouldn't even replace my cassette tapes with AAC's.
really, I don't understand how anyone can listen to that codec.
could you post links for a counter-explanation for the NSA key story? I haven't heard it before.

for what it's worth, both redhat and mozilla.org ship mozilla RPM's that display nicely anti-aliased fonts using xft.
well, I am much happier with ardour+ladspa on debian than I was with protools on windows.
FWIW, the guy from comcast had me burn him a knoppix disc.

mod points at ready! go!

the government doesn't need to care about licensing costs. the government buys extra, and more extra.
it's also a false economy.

now go work on your spamsite!
well they should have POSTED about it! jeez!
I wanna be able to read it until the frigging harddrive burns out. not when some company tells me I can.
on the bright side, 3 mos. might give some folks a chance to reverse-engineer it.
oh, WELL! ... THAT's good news!
!!
NOT
