Hmm, maybe I got a little ahead of myself as you said coins & paper cash. It was this that I was reacting to and in my typede (like I stampede? I dunno), I forgot that I mostly used my CC for online stuff and online bills. It was my EC card (Direct debit) that I was using daily. Ooops. it's been a while and I have been using my CC over here exclusively to get the points. It has skewed my memory of how I used my CC over there.
My point was it is still primarily plastic, not coins & paper...
As for the CC thing. Yeah people do have them and do use them, just not as much as over here.
I'm sorry, I lived in Munich for 7 years since 2000, using my credit card and debit card in most shops without issue. The only place you don't use it *as much* is in the beer gardens & restaurants, though you can still use them just fine in most (it' just annoys them cos it's slower). Some places do not accept it, just like over here (Thanks, No Frills!).
Also, pretty much every German I knew there had a credit card. It's standard issue to offer you a credit card when you open a new bank account there. What is different is how they use it. They typically do not get into debt there. That CC's are used as a debt-inducing tool in most of the western world is not a fault of the Cc's. I have *never* carried a balance on any of my CCs.
Cheques, on the other hand, are useless there. They look at you, wondering what in the hell you are giving them (this is the bank tellers, I am talking about), then they go look for a special form and come back 5 mins later and accept your cheque. This is a good thing as it's an utterly dated payment method. It's retarded that it's still in use in modern countries.
If anything, Germany is AHEAD of the times in these regards, everything financial is super efficient and fast as it's all electronic (Except giving your Euros to the beer lady:) )
got a link to a youtube vid that does this? Maybe I have just been lucky in that the times I fullscreen a youtube vid, it's only available in one resolution...
If I let a youtube video buffer and then click fullscreen, it is still buffered. But if you change the resolution (i.e. going to the HD version of the vid rather than the standard), of course it will have to buffer it again - it's a different video!
This is the same for me on many browsers & platforms. What browser/platform/plugin are you using??
Hey, don't get me wrong. I'm all for repetitive jokes. With suitable timing, they can be a good 'badum tisch'. But much as I always found this one funny, I was always amused more by the impossibility of its very nature (Unless you are using a live see-as-they-type app like ICQ used to have, remember the first time you used that with someone you were flirting with online?). I just felt the urge to call on that impossibility today.
Of course the AC that replied to said calling seemed to be on the defense, obviously assuming I was attacking the OP. That just made the whole little debacle even funnier (in my little mixed up world, that is).
The stock photo in the article says "Where's the internet gone?" but it's just a picture of a couple of people using old computers.
I often see things like this where they feel they HAVE to put a photo in, a meaningful photo to help get the point across. To help get this point across they put in captions to make it clear, but half the time they put ZERO effort in to actually finding a suitable image. For this one, they could have at least found a picture with someone with their arms up in despair at the interwebs being down. But no, just people playing games or something on flickery old CRT monitors, or something.
You know what? This REALLY GRINDS MY GEARS. Back to you Tom.
Thats funny, In December I got my first smartphone, an HTC Desire. Since 2008, I have had a work Blackberry. I fucking hate typing on that thing. We just got new blackberries 2 weeks ago (The new bold I think, I don't care). It's even WORSE to type on. The keys no longer have gaps and have little raised bits. It is fricking horrible to type on.
I hate blackberries.I really, passionately hate that thing, with a passion. Hate it.
Typing is so much easier on my Android phone. The auto correction on typing errors is a million times better than on the BB. With such small keys, either tactile or touch, it's all about the autocorrect system in my mind and the Android one is streets ahead.
All just my opinion, but it goes to show that not ALL people who say "iPhone/Android/$touchscreen is better than BB/$tactile" are giving uninformed opinion.
How do I use netstat to check that I can connect from my local machine to a remote machine (I checked the man page and don't see an option for this, so i'm genuinely curious)? Running netstat on the remote machine to see if the port is listening does not cut it, there is more to it than just listening.
Also, and I know I did not mention this usage case, but I do it regularly and lots of others have mentioned it... How would netstat give me any indication that I am connecting to the service I am expecting(sometimes you know what greeting to see for certain services you ahve configured)? How can I interact with the service in a rudimentary manner(GET for http. HELO, for SMTP etc)?
Telnet client has great value. For what it does, I am aware of no other ubiquitous tool to use instead. I'm curious to find out if there is one. Surely it would just be Telnet with a different name:)
Oh go stick your head in a pig!
This post really made me laugh for some reason

Sorry I ranted there :)

Schroedingers Internet?
Smitty, are you one of the Imagination Movers?

Hahaha yes, quite :)
Like I it's not the millionth time i've heard the old "oh noes, the internet is de

Why did you click on submit before finishing your sentence?
eh? Eh? EH???
Yeah, thought so. The internets are still on.

I hope, when they start numbering them, that they don't assign the number 5 to one of them.
(Sorry, the stealth trailer at the bottom of the article just looked like a rip off to me)
That is just ludicrous!
I'm just wondering if he was trying to reproduce this humour.
Fuck the fucking fuckers.
Oh come on, that's just a load of dingo's kidneys.
DOH! Misread that. Not used netcat before. I think now that it's been mentioned to me before but I read it as netstat lol. oops.
But yeah, it's not ubiquitous... it's not on our Solaris or aix boxes. Telnet client still wins :)

I use telnet client daily for checking connectivity to a port on a server. It's also everywhere so I can always easily use it.
What do you suggest instead?
HAMMERTIME!
Now THAT was cool.
But how did you get down the stairs?
You made me choke on my tea and laugh uncontrollably at work!
:(
