i am actually not against smart meters as long as three things happen.
1) The monitoring stops at my house, they can monitor my usage, but they can't tell my equipment to turn off when they feel like it to help balance the power grid. 2) they don't interfere with the rest of the world. Fire depts, police, ambulance, all use a very large variety of spectrums, and shielding them all against the EMF generated by powerline broadband isn't going to be cheap. 3) they don't sell the end user the bandwidth, to keep the system secure.
The easiest and least expensive solution actually is to run a fiber line with the power lines. Hack resistant, fairly easy to deploy, non interfering, and lots of bandwidth so they can monitor both the meters and the transformers. The last measure is there because once you have physical access you can start hacking.
If you have to spend a couple of hours upgrading your interface before you can use your new toy then you should really think about finding a better toy.

No. The wireless part is tied into the ignition computer. Basically in order to turn it off you have to replace a SOC, with a version that works without it.
When the battery in mine died. I have a "valet" key that functions like a normal key however it can be driven without the fob present. Useful, but not without risks.
These FOB's need to be passive but still with random crypto. or at least make sure the transceiver part of the circuit is passive and only use the battery for the encryption system.

There really isn't a single decent place to track and download software for Macs. Version tracker wasn't bad but now it suck. Even on the Windows side all the big name software repositories have more ads than software for you to download.
Yea 10 years, and 3 versions ago Windows Ran on various platforms, but only occasionally and then it only ported certian things, MS Office has never been ported to Windows on PPC, only Mac OS on PPC. Heck MSFT in 8 years hasn't even made a pen tablet friendly version of MS Office.
That is why people are surprised. it is something MSFT hasn't done, and has made damn hard for anyone else to think about it.
Compared to Any linux app you want on any platform is achievable, if not already done. Or compare it to OS X, which not only ran on 4 different arch's at once, did so with fat binaries that the same download would work across all four. Compare the fact the Mac's have gone through not one but 5 or 6 complete processor arch difference's over the years with relatively smooth transitions, and backward compatibility. (it takes a bit of work but you can run OS 9 on an intel mac with 10.6 at decent speeds).

On my work computer adobe acrobat takes 10-25 seconds to load. yesterday i tried to print a single page from the middle of a PDF and it took a good 10 minutes to process it., but only 5 seconds to actually print it when windows finally had control of the file. The processor wasn't loaded it is just that adobe acrobat is a piece of shit software.
Hard drives are one of two bottlenecks in current computers the other is RAM. RAM tends to be several clock cycles behind the processor. This is why I have high hopes for memresistors, if you can move the HD into RAM you can have a massive speed increase. of course all software will have to be rewritten, but that is besides the point.

Second if all your passwords are one app click away from being accessed then you are using the wrong app, the majority of apps that need passwords store them encrypted. Things like mail, twits, fb, might all login automatically, but you still have to have the simple pin to get that far.
Last of all if your storing passwords for websites on your phone then your doing something wrong. Passwords that are hard to brute force but easily remembered arent that hard to come up with.
But that is almost exactly the same record as the Galaxy Tab. (The rate per month, not the total, obviously).

Remember no mentions soon to ship products at CES. Everything is 4-12 months away at a minimum.(if you want proof go look at last years CES and find out how many of those products actually shipped in 2010)

Why would you want a full blown linux install? non of the apps will be tailored for a touch screen interface.
