Why don't you actually go read about Inferno. Inferno uses a slightly modified Plan 9 Kernel written in C with a Inferno VM built into the kernel. Every on top of that is in VM, but the kernel itself is written in C.

Drivers, etc are written in inferno's VM I do believe so it is a hybrid but I could be wrong about that.

Speaking of Inferno I wish some one with some design abilities would do to Inferno what Apple did to BSD. Make it easy to use. I would jump at it.

In fact 99% of applications shouldn't need an installer for OS X. Just a drag to the /Applications folder. Installers are messy, if you need one your app is already designed wrong.

MSFT has turned a single user OS and tacked on multi user support, and then multi user security. OS X, and every *nix are Multi-user OS's. I not only have applications but also user specific applications stuff that only I can run, and stuff that only I can see.

You shouldn't have to be an admin to install a web browser, word processor , or spreadsheet. You should only be an admin if your installing it for everyone.

you really don't know the history of software do you?

Unix was originally distributed with source code. Drivers came with source code. Stallman got pissed off when his printer drivers wouldn't work right and the company tried to keep the driver's source code secret. So He started GNU. To recreate the open sharing of source code that the researchers had in the face of closed minded business people.

In the beginning you got a copy of software you got source code with it. Unix had huge sections of it's kernel printed in books so you could learn from it, and of it.

Let me ask you this. Your disconnected from the internet for 6 months but still have a computer. Windows breaks and requires a reinstall. You can't do it. Windows Activation occurs and you lose all your data, all your notes, everything. Even though you have a valid , bought and paid for copy, you can't use said software. Your screwed.

I use Mac's. I don't mind paying for closed software. As long as I can use it whenever I want, I have no problems.

Enjoy the fine print. MSFT owns souls because of it. MP3 decoders are the same way. MSFT isn't the only company to endorse a standard that can't be implemented by anyone because of patent licensing restrictions.

MSFT has done it before and continues to do so. MSFT can't change without a complete workplace management change. Basically firing every manager and executive. So until that happens, I will always be skeptical of MSFT's motives.
