    Well first start with the CPU the G4 can crunch about 150% more than a x86 (it varies)

    Price watch

    tower 2 ghz on board network and video and windows $250
    Video card (because a shared memory isn't equal to a nvidia$50
    Upgrade the memory to 512mb ~$50(depends on type)

    Total $350 Plus say an hour to assemble at $40/bucks an hour employee rate.

    $390 and you have a comparable performace. Of course your still using a butt ugly case that is noisey, takes up 10 time the physical space.

    Quality does matter, Apple isn't perfect, but I do prefer it over my dell everyday.

    $300 bucks? let me guess you used a case you already had, a hard drive you already had.

    The componets are similiar to new PC's.

    Your case is about 12 times the size of the mini. Heck even mini-itx systems end up being nearly twice the size.

    So you spent $300 for a motherboard and CPU, because you already had everything else, and you can 'build' a mini for cheaper?

    Yep you are officially not the target audeince.

    So your saying raw fish doesn't taste like fish? Does it taste like chicken? How about steak?

    No seriously even catfish doesn't taste 'fishy' other than texture when it's fresh. By fresh I mean Catch fish on shore line, gut, clean, prep, and cook over open fire within 5 minutes of catching.(cook longer than 5 minutes)

    Some of the best fish i have ever had, never made it to a fridge.

    The russian ship Barron(?) that was simlar to the shuttle didn't have the main engines that our shuttle does. As such it was a more stable glider becuase it wasn't as tail heavy.

    Use a shuttle design, just use external mounted primary thrusters that can be left behind. (aka Armageddon)The primary thrusters can be left in orbit and refueled. Save launch weight, make life easier on the moon.(more room, ability to carry larger objects) A series of primary rockets, left on the moon, and here in eath orbit, would make sure a way home is always had.

    Editing Video. oh the matrix interface. Now that's how you edit images, and video content. With standard keyboards for text.

    A much better way to edit images. Of course digital creation techinques, will have to be adjusted. New toys. yea baby.

    That is one reason why I bought a 12" Powerbook at the end of Novemember. Tiger is due out in April. If your looking to buy , hold off until then. If you buy close enough to the release date you do get a free upgrade.

    G5 powerbooks won't be out until at least June, if not even August. Though I must admitt I haven't had a speed problem on a 1.3ghz G4 yet. I run Fire, iTerm, Firefox, iTunes all at the same time. Add Photoshop, X-Chat Aqua, and force the Powerbook to run two displays(lcd, and 19" flat screen) and I can force the fans to turn on. Sluggish nope, it still responds quickly, unless I have photoshop doing a large image manipulation.

    What's better, it's small and light. Want to sit in front of the fire place? go for it, for light web surfig the fan won't come on, it stays that cool. My only wish is that Apple would build the Newton 2.

    Okay it's not quite, but it's not racist but based on space.

    Japan has a large population on a small land mass. the united states could double it's population, and the only thing that would be a pain is food, and personalities.

    My friends first house is 1700sq feet (158 m2) He paid $80,000 for it. Let's see how much it is in japan. www.japanhomesearch.com Let's see, it's tough to buy a house but let's go with rental, at price. We pay ~$700 a month. The search in both city and non city area shows prices between 250,000 yen - 800,000yen a month. Or roughly $2500 - $5000 a month in rent.

    Before you call someone a racist, check your facts. we pay $700 a month for 1700sq, a house We did pay pay $700 a month for a 1000,sq apartment, 1700 sq feet of apartment in japan is going to cost $2500-$3500 a month or 4-5 times the price in the US. Note prices vary by location, but it will still be relative.

    You right but for the wrong reasons. in Japan Housing is expensive. A $100,000 house in the US is worth several million in Japan. The majority of the people live in small apartments. In the US it's common to have parties in your own home. In Japan it's common to have parties in specific restraunts, because of space.

    You live at home because it's the only way to afford to live.

    Um if meory serves, kids started using mp3's around 1997 the first players appeared a few years later.

    The music came before the player.

    this time the player really came before the video. Though content is being distributed, bandwidth is a pain, quailty sucks, and storage requirments are high.

    Of course MP3's were killing dial-up. So the questions are what will happen first. 10-20Mbs internet access? or high quailty content? Will consumers switch to watching movies on small screens when the bulk of the population can't focus on such devices?

    I say this as I download a whole TV series episode by episode, because I am tired of missing it on TV. Then again, I use my powerbook to display the shows to my TV.

    Elgato currently has one for Macs.

    Of course the elgato does no local processing just sends raw data to/from the computer to which it is hooked up. So if you want to decode and play HDTV on a large screen, you need a Dual G5 more/or less dedcated to the task.

    If all you want to do is record, a G4 works well.

    Of course the difference must be spoken. roughly 99 average for Bush, and a 102 average for Kerry. Not that huge of a gap.

    One very simple question.

    How do you know these are anormal, and that it's increased? Only for the past few centuries have we been recording data. We really don't have a good picture of our world's history, and minor changes that take place.

    Yes earthquakes and volcano's are minor changes.

    This is a personal pet peeve in wall street. Stock holders should have an interest in a company. Not just the bottom line, but the people, and products.

    If you buy stock in a company you should also be responsible if that company did something wrong.

    Companies can all the rights of a person, yet none of the responsiblity to others.

    Just to point out the obvious.

    GnuStep is based off of Next Step which was bought by Apple and was used as a basis for OS X.

    next step was also founded by Steve Jobs. The similar idea of everything intergrated for the application staying around isn't surprising.

    You are correct but are talking about two different points that play off of each other.

    Every mac file has two points. one for data and a resource. if the pointer to the data doesn't match the pointer in the resource for the data location it gets automatically updated. So if you move a file an alias which uses the resource to find the file, starts looking for it.

    Now OS X doesn't use a lot of shared installed libraries from what I can tell, it appears most of them are installed to begin with. So installing KDE and Gnome would require the same approach still. Yet installing Firefox, or mozilla, would jjust use libraries already installed.

    Um that is why Microsoft.com is served by Linux.

    It's called caching. The could of setup a short term cache setup. It's tough to do with LIVE video, It's why apple.com went down from some domains and not others. It's who got to the cached files.

    Microsoft uses a caching service for their hardest hit sites. That service uses Linux , If you ever wonder why netcraft comes back with IIS(MSFT) on Linux that is the reason. It's business. It does make sense.

    The probelm that this is standard for mac world expo. High bandwidth high loads are the norm. Normally they stream that keynote live to thousands.

    This year they didn't want to due to bandwidth restrictions, and they still went down. What idiot put that system into place? Even without the OS debate. Somebody really screwed up.

    It is the one fsking feature I was hoping for in 'pages' Apple should of included Open office document support for both spotlight, and Pages. Even if you can't save them at least be able to import them.

    Open Office for OS X was waiting for a rewrite to 2.0 2.0 is about to be released, and Open Office for OS X is another year away.

    It is sad. That's why I have run linux, and am typing this from my powerbook.

    it's normal for my windows machines, I haven't owned the apple long enough yet, and well linux doesn't last cause I change distro's because i was bored.

    My windows don't last due to use, my linux os's don't last cause i keep changing them.

    What comes next?

    Which is why once a year or so I do a scheduled complete re install. everything gets backed up and then I boot from a floppy and type my all time favorite command for cleaning a windows computer.
