it's not like any of the alternatives to paper don't use a lot of processing chemicals though, and there's much cleaner ways of disposing of the waste and friendly alternatives to bleach these days.
personally i don't use it at all unless forced to because it's redundant. it is misleading people to make out that paper is some kind of baby seal killing product though...
look, the terms internet addiction and sex addiction, are a big load of wank. it's just rubbish, next you'll be telling me i'm addicted to breathing air.
the reason they can't stand people not abiding by rules other then their own, is it poses the question that maybe their own way of life is "wrong", which for people with the belief that their dogma is the only way into heaven, is an untenable situation.
can anyone shed any light on the state of copyright in brazil? if the hosting party takes all the heat internet users of brazil have a get out of jail free card.
I'd say the only thing that would bring them here would be, well, us. As you've already covered there's better sources of raw material then earth, if they can fly all this way then they aren't in any need of life support systems even if earth was compatible for them.
my guess is they would want to investigate us as intelligent life is probably the rarest thing in the universe.
i think you are on to something with the whole idea of seeing them coming means we might be ok, otherwise we are fucked.
another spin on it is they may deliberately let us see them coming so we get over the fright of it. if a species like ours see's a threat a long way off we are much more likely to prepare and feel less threatened by it.
i don't think on a technological level our weapons will be any defence, even our greatest weapon the nuke is propelled in a primitive manner that they could easily counter. any species with deep space travel is going to have us out gunned by a large margin. the advanced propolsion system needed would alone be something they could turn into a weapon greater then anything we have.
it's impossible to know the intentions of alien species, but fun to speculate on i guess. My personal feeling is they would be as curious about us as we are about them, since space is rather large and lonely they would be unlikely to want to wipe out another sentient species(atleast until they get to know how big of a bunch of douches we are). worst case we end up in an alien zoo, best case they take us under their wing and teach us stuff.
if you think the USA compares in anyway to the violence in africa, I question your life experience in a big way.
south africa has the 2nd highest rate of murder in the world, most of the other african countries would be right up there with it if they had accurate records. the USA is ranked 24th, and has 10x less murders then south africa. and remember south africa is probably the most developed country out of all of them.

because the problem is just so huge in some African countries, and the profit from operating there so small it's just not worth dealing with. the sad thing is Africans see these scammers as hero's, when it's really them holding everyone else back.
the problem is the aid doesn't come close to covering the fraud that would happen if you just opened the doors.
it's chicken and egg, we can't trust transactions from africa, but they can't rise above the need to steal to survive because we can't trust them. unfortunately for the people in africa it's not going to be the credit companies and merchants that give in first.
credit and merchant issues aren't their biggest problems though, it's the lack of stable government. some area's in africa are pure machette country, meaning you'll be hacked to death for a 350ml bottle of water. no business can safely operate there, so the people don't get to benefit from trade dooming them to at best a poor farming lifestyle.
I think it's a symptom of today's society, the blame culture.
people always have to find someone to blame, they can't just accept shit that's out of their control. another prime example is an earth quake in kalgoorlie australia. you'd think no one would be able to find a way to blame someone for an earth quake right? wrong, there's people trying to tell the world the super pit is why they had a magnitude 5 quake.
i've been in the super pit, yes it's a big hole in the ground, but an earth quake? seriously? compared to the forces at work that caused that quake it's like pimple on the ass of australia.
you don't need an expert, just someone with 1/2 a fucking brain.
ash turns into volcanic glass inside the engine, wearing it to failure. the ash can be so fine you can't see it, and you also can't detect it on normal radar. by the time you realise your in it might be too late.
considering the fact planes have gone down before because of this exact problem it makes it a high risk. If i was a government regulator, my response would be if sir branson was prepared to be charged with manslaughter if anyone died flying through this ash, go for it.
I agree with everything he's said, but my original point stands, that India has huge cultural issues to over come and that it's old system the OP was in awe of sucked for most of it's population.
I'm not saying India isn't trying or that it'll always be that way. but by your own admission the cast system still exists today, and it's a messed up part of Indian culture.
yes, a profound culture that still enforces a cast system, which says if you are born to a family that eats rats, that's all your ever allowed to be. one that uses child labour and has an active human slave trade.
lets not start gushing too much just because they appear to have made a law that's popular with/. think.
he certainly won't be laughing if you play that card but neglect to address support for the multitude of software packages various professionals use that don't run under linux. In my office i can think of 7 packages off the top of my head that are absolutely critical to our business, and won't run under linux.
you have to remember the business isn't there to facilitate your personal OSS crusade.
I say this as someone who ran a company on freebsd, which is more free then your precious linux.
a lot of the time people set their AC to 19c, when 23c is just as comfortable but will save shit loads of power if everyone does it. as long as you can just override this with your normal air con remote i don't see a problem
anyone who has spent 12 hours a day chained to a computer programming or problem solving, knows having your own office is by far the best.
you can shut out noise and distractions. if this round table idea is some management idea to stop goofing off, then forget it. something some managers just can't get, is that you CAN NOT stop people goofing off if they want to.
if own offices isn't possible go with cubicals, a round table in a meeting room, and buy them noise canceling headphones.
why the headphones you ask? firstly because it'll allow them to escape the guy beside them blowing his nose or whistling some annoying tune, but it'll also instill a sense in them that you actually care about their output, and when people feel that they'll work harder and not feel like your just milking them. for $500 it'd be a sound investment.
personally i don't use it at all unless forced to because it's redundant. it is misleading people to make out that paper is some kind of baby seal killing product though...
environmentalists are just messed up and confused, they've got so many cruisades on these days they are bound to conflict.
huh, capitalism has failed? i musted have missed that memo
last i checked paper was made from the waste from milling timber from sustainably managed forests as well as recycled sources.
look, the terms internet addiction and sex addiction, are a big load of wank. it's just rubbish, next you'll be telling me i'm addicted to breathing air.
there's lots of innovative stuff in bing that shits on google. the slashdot crowd are just ignorant of it, they prefer their blinders.

if the blather is so bad, why did you add to it with your own useless post?

i'm betting he wouldn't accept.
maybe it's illegal but that law sure isn't enforced. plenty of Indian immigrants here have told me about it.

sure thing, with the containment measures used today i wouldn't object if you paid me lots of cash.
