oh my, so you think vb6 using access as a datastore was uncommon? it wasn't configuration, i poured over the manual and forums, googled till my eyes bled and nothing we tried made a difference.
that vb jet was a piece of shit isn't in debate here, it's the fact samba wouldn't perform on the same level with beefier hardware. it's a little hard to sell samba over windows as a file sharing solution when it doesn't perform as well, and i was questioning if that's been resolved or not. if you choose to think it's a troll, it's not my problem.
can samba keep up speed wise these days? a few years back we tried to switch an old NT4 file sharing server over to linux/samba, it was for a simple vb6 application which using jet to connect to access db's. samba appeared to have some kind of bottle neck where once you had more than 50 open connections it slowed right down. we tried everything right up to tweaking kernel settings and it was still slower. it wasn't hardware either, the linux system was significantly better resourced than the old nt4 system.
and no, rewriting the application just to suit linux wasn't an option.
every seagate i've owned hasn't lasted more than 3 years, which i consider unacceptable. even when they were supposed to be the best i didn't like them, same with WD.
maxtor have always been reliable and well priced, hence why they are the market leader.
i'd say as a whole HD quatity has been on the way down for the last 8 years. i still have a 1.8gig that works but nothing past 100gig has lasted 3 years. i suspect it's as a result of moving 100% of production to china.
i don't think it makes it ok for them to download it because they wouldn't have bought it in the first place - that's a bit of a self for filling prophecy.
if i was the RIAA and MPAA i'd be going after aggregation sites like piratebay etc because they are making a living off it. really their stance that they don't host anything is pretty thin - they are still an intregal part of the pirating process AND they are making pretty big bucks out of it with porn ads and other dodgey crap.
the other reason i think these sites are bad is they are a huge vector of infection with trojans and viruses.
they can't be sure, i suspect they have arrived at his figure by checking for pirated content on torrent sites. so really they should be saying "95% of music on torrents is pirated". Which i would have no issue with - i think they would be right.
the problem is they then leap straight to this dream land where every download is a sale they missed out on. most of their shit isn't worth a download when it's free, let alone 15$.
no where did it say it was windows, in fact it says the mail servers were supplied by Fujitsu so it's most likely linux. so all you retards crowing about windows being insecure should eat your words.
I'm going to go ahead and call it now. anyone running odds on it? my call is that they will find microbial life in the next 10 years, buried in the topsoil/mud around some kind of geological source of heat.
actually it's illegal in most places to abuse police officers. the reason being they put up with more shit in a day than you do in a year, and they need some kind of recourse.
boot time as a whole is fuck all total delay in your time spent on a computer, so who fucking cares. lets work on larger cheaper solid state drives please.
missing the point. with the baby seals he is killing something and also harming the environment, which is the typical anti bush tactic. *sigh* it takes all the fun out when you have to explain these things...
really, so how many hours of/. time should the company dock you for? seriously as long as there is give and take flexible working hours are the way to go.
it's great as long as those days off ARE your days off and the company doesn't try to find some sneaky way to steal them. i currently work a 100 hour 8 day week, but then i get 6 days off. I find it's fantastic for productivity because longer days are better than lots of short days. it leaves more time to consult with peers and test things. lets face it, 9 - 5 days are a waste, those few extra hours aren't effective as lesure time. on my 6 days off i can really get out and enjoy myself.
jobs today have a higher technical requirement than back in the day, so while i don't agree that just turning up is enough to get the job, i certainly think HR departments are out of control. we recently went through rounds of cuts like most companys and the ONLY department not to lose staff was bloody HR! inspite of the fact we now have a lot less people and less positions which means less work for HR, they weasled out of having to cut anyone. and our HR isn't even as bad at the personality and drug test as many places.
it won't last though, this recession is good for cleaning out the cruft.

i'd say the bottle neck was in samba not in jet, since it worked fine it nt4?

this was samba 3.0

pay us money, and we MIGHT give you a cut of any profits we make. fuck that, sounds like a pyramid scheme to me.

ha, firefox's spell checker picked it as correct
my god the US patent office needs to start applying this thing called the obviousness test.

actually they haven't switched yet, so using your kind of reasoning this justifies their choice.
md5 has only been broken in labs, not in the wild, in the wild it's much much harder

it probably doesn't work on linux...
.. next we are going to have a post telling us steve's stool isn't a healthy colour. seriously people, post something news worthy for once.

care to explain why they hate having an extra day off???? i work a similar work week and i fucking love it.

No you fools, all his communications were in hand written letters inked with the blood of clubbed baby seals.
