"This requires a server somewhere, and software on the machine to do the bricking."

did you not read the whole paragraph where i talked about homebrewed bios software? the thief could wipe the HD and it'd make no difference.

"After all you can not "send a command" to Starbucks wireless router and expect it to magically find your laptop next to that shady character nervously gulping an americano. You need a server somewhere that either enables the machine or bricks it when it software running on the machine makes a connection (from INSIDE the wireless firewall/router)."

phone home software, that's what i was talking about all along. duh.

"That sounds like an interesting project but the liability insurance would kill you."

why the hell would i need that? this is for me and no one else. if i bricked my own laptop do you think i'm going to sue myself or something?

  2. bios hacks on What Are the Best Laptop Theft Recovery Measures? · · Score: 1

bios hacks have always interested me but the lack of open source bios firmware has prevented me getting into it. I reckon a bios hack that does a "check in" when connected to the internet could work wonders. once you mark the system as stolen you could send a command to brick the laptop, sound an alarm or maybe randomly goatse the new owner. you'd quickly be able to trace back where the sale came from... 90% of the time i'm betting on ebay.

this is one reason australia's taxation model of the goods and services tax is an improvement of the old sales tax model.

it's a 10% flat rate tax on all goods and services with a few exceptions like fresh fruit, veg, milk and bread (essentials) as well as preventative medical supplies like condoms. it's applied across all states the same and once every 3 months you fill out a single page form and bpay your payment. it used to take me about 1 hour including the time organizing the receipts.

i'm not familar with the USA's tax system but it sounds like it's different sales tax rates per state? so why isn't tax reform more of an election issue?

I've only ever run into the passive back stabbers, possibly because i'm well over 6 foot tall and built like an Abraham's tank, making direct confrontation hazardous to their health.

be warned though, the back stabbing ninjas are dangerous. one i had years ago was a manager who was completely clueless about IT, and would hold endless conference calls and make my brain bleed from his management speak. His classic assault to the senses was to try and use acronyms in an excessive manner, then when i failed to understand what the fuck he was on about, he would bitch about me to other pointing out how i didn't know what his made up acronyms meant.

water cooler snipers are another dangerous breed, these ones do no work yet somehow remain invaluable to the company in the eyes of management. they will crap on your performance to others around the water cooler, but won't hesitate to run to you for help with that project that's due next week. I had one of these parasites in my work place once, his MO was to replace exe's with "upgrades" on a friday afternoon, without testing them or warning me. he only ever did it on the weekends i was on call. when i arrived and everything was backed up in the queues, i'd have no idea what was wrong making me look totally incompetent. on the monday when the boss asked what the fuck happened, he'd make sure we both took the blame, but then at the water cooler he'd make it known it was really me that made the mistake, nothing to do with his untested changes.
