"The 1.2 GHz K8 is already substantially faster than the 1.6 GHz Atom. The 1.6 GHz K8 will widen the gap even more substantially."
First, we're talking about a specific processor, the AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 ( 1.6GHz ). K8 is the general name for all Athlon64. That's like saying Chevys are faster than Fords. Ok, but there's about a dozen different models, going to need to narrow that down a bit. (god i love car analogies, they muck up everything;)
Second, proof? Where's your reviews? Where's your benchmark? I posted mine already and they said "As unsatisfying a conclusion as this may be, there is no clear-cut winner in our match-up of Netbook CPUs... spending hands-time with systems using all three processors, we didn't find any large difference in our anecdotal usage experience..."
"If all he was providing was "vision" and bloviation and hype via his blog, with maybe a seriously minority share of the capital, then he should STFU."
As much as I hate Arrington and the "CrunchPad" because better $300 Tablet PCs already exist, I would have to disagree with you on this. Manufacturing a device and getting it to market is one thing, but advertising it is the other side of the coin. Hell look at the pet rock, anyone could literally make a "pet" rock at home for free, yet the idea made the creator a millionaire within 6 months, all through advertising and hype.
I think Arrington was doing his fair share just blogging and creating hype over the product, he even managed to get it on slashdot 5 times. Announcing that the product is vaporware likely killed his credibility with blogs and fans worldwide, he will never be trusted again when he announces a new product.
"And what ther lines of work are they going to find in Somalia? The pirates are mainly ex-fishermen, but the fishing grounds have been destroyed by overfishing by foreign factory ships and by foreign dumping of toxic waste."
Really? I didn't know the pirates were ex-fishermen that can't find jobs, well that changes my opinion entirely, let's allow them to take oil tankers hostage and kill crew members until they get their ransom.
"Water jet engines are not that expensive, and the pirates make a TON of money on ransom. "
if they're so wealthy why are they showing up on dinky boats in the first place? Think the guy in the ~$1,000 boat has a few million in the bank? I'm thinking they either do it once and retire, or they blow all the $$$$ and they're left broke again with the crappy boat.
"Why not just hire some skilled gunsmen on the boats that can pick off pirates at will as they come towards the ships on those little boats? Seems cheaper and much more effective."
skilled gunsmen cost $$$. They're trying to do this as cheaply as possible without making every oil vessel a floating fortress.
"The trouble with non-lethal means of stopping the pirates is, it means they will live another day to try again."
True, but when they epic fail enough they'll get frustrated and quit. Plus when they promise their pirate buddies a "big score" if they join them for the day and they fail their buddies aren't going to be too happy with them.
"For my new PC I went with a large (26") screen instead of 2x22" for the same price, and I regret my choice."
Glad I went the other way. I had the option of going big screen or adding a second LCD. Went with the second LCD and I love it, couldn't imagine life without it. Great having one page load while reading another, or a video running on one screen and searching with the other, and full screen games take up just one monitor while the other remains open. I'm actually considering going with a third LCD and a PCI-e x1 video card like a Radeon 4350 since my mb is equipped with only one x16 slot.
I think a dual screen laptop would be very useful, I'd rather have two screens that slide out like demonstrated then a huge 19"
"1- the Atom really is much, much MUCH less powerful than any other CPU currently on the market, bar VIA's."**

They still shoved a basic low-power processor in the laptop. Shame they didn't throw at least a core 2 duo in there and charge an even grand, at least with a c2d we wouldn't be making netbook references.

"What gives the police the right to compel a person to say or do anything?
The way I see it, the police know this exec is going to walk away with a clean record- after all, he's done nothing wrong."
The exec incited a riot, then refused to tell rioters to disband. How is that "nothing wrong"?
If you owned a mall and 3,000 screaming teenagers showed up for nothing you'd want them to leave too before they caused any damage. I'm sure the police wasn't staffed to handle 3,000 rioters that day (3,000 according to this article and see the video) and they were asking for assistance from the riot organizers, those that started the riot, to tell them to disband.
When he refused he was charged. Makes sense to me, even without a car analogy.
"You are in no situation to reverse a doctors' diagnosis based on some pictures you found on the internet."
Yep. Giant and easily winnable lawsuit in 3...2...1....
Hell if we judged everyone by Facebook:

--I drive a Viper and vacation in Italy
--My ex is a really nice girl

"MP3 players may be small and cheap, but you can't get much better than zero size (because it's built into your phone) and almost zero cost (because it uses the electronics that are already in your phone). As for the battery life, it's only a matter of time before this is improved, just as it is with camera quality."
maybe the mp3 player you put in your car or listen to during your subway commute, that mp3 player was replaced the day the iPhone came out, but the mp3 player you use at the gym and sweat all over will not be replaced, unless they figure out a way to put a 4"+ LCD on a iPod Nano.
Digital cameras are becoming slimmer and smaller, it's only a matter of time before the same camera you buy today will fit entirely into the cellphone you buy 5 years from now. Just look how far cellphones have come in just ten years, from being bulky with b&w screens and a 1 day battery life to giant 4" LCDs and far thinner than a deck of cards.
I do think they missed a few things in the article.
For one, mp3 players won't be replaced. The ability to carry a small, cheap mp3 player with a 20+ battery life around is like the argument of the wrist watch being replaced, it's nice to have a practically disposable music player with a long battery life.
Netbooks also aren't going anywhere. The ability to run the same software on your (almost) pocketable netbook as you do on your desktop is an infinitely useful ability. So far no smartphone as even come close, even the amazing iPhone doesn't have Firefox, IE, Chrome or Opera browsers. Only way the Netbook would vanish is if you could emulate Windows XP on your smartphone.
However I'm surprised they didn't mention video cameras. The new nano takes fantastic video and it's only a $150 device, I'm sure the new iPhone will follow suit. Can you imagine the video capabilities in phones 5-10 yrs from now? While I'm sure there will still be camcorders for sale I doubt many people will continue to spend hundreds on a separate camcorder when the cellphone does 99% of what's needed and the price is subsidized by the carriers. Of course there will always be professional videographers who will be needed for weddings, but the average family vacation will be filmed on your 2020 smartphone.
"Certainly nobody in my circles. I've asked - nobody I know uses Second Life. Are we missing the greatest thing since sliced bread? I'd wager a big no."
actually the people I know that play Second Life are teenage girls that like the virtual sex. Guess it makes sense, they don't feel comfortable doing it in real life (or labeled as a slut by peers) so they turn to Second Life.
And you might be thinking "sure but that's rare, the girls in SL are probably all guys in real life". Maybe, but as a straight guy would you want to watch your female avatar having sex with a guy?
He's not really that random, he's the "partner group manager with Microsoft", LinkedIn says he's the SMB & Distribution Director at Microsoft Ltd. So I don't think a 0-60 in 6.8 is completely out of the range of possibility, especially if the kid spent a few dollars in mods to make it a bit faster, and since we're talking about a car that his parents (or someone) spent $$$$ on a GPS tracker years ago it's clear the family has money to spend.

read reviews before commenting. Like I said, "it's barely more than a Acer Aspire One"
Specs are 1.6ghz AMD, 1gb ram, 160gb hd, ATI 3200, so it's barely more than a Acer Aspire One with a second 10" screen, so why the $700 price difference? I imagine we'll see these going for ~$300 to $400 by spring.
IMHO, i think all terriots should be given bloody lips, but that's just me.

Sure, today. You could have said the same of digital cameras 15 yrs ago, yet today kodak has discontinued production of their once popular kodachrome film "because of declining customer demand in an increasingly digital age."

Considering Q3 2008 AMD only had a profit of $80 million and AMD lost 3 billion last year, I'd say they've very happy getting 1.25 billion from Intel.
Also let's not forget 1.25 billion is 25% of Intel's 2008 profit so it's not exactly spare change.
I'd imagine AMD is throwing a big party right about now.
