The problem is that Moglen has a different ideology and free-rides on the free software movement and spreads his dangerous ideas.

I am an opponent of software patents but I believe that audiences will not realise that Moglen did *nothing* against US software patenting. So talking is nice. Action is better. The reason why there are still software patents in the US is that people like Moglen simulate action while there is no organised movement.

Probably even this is wrong as the US is out of reach for Iraq and we don't know whether it recognised the US as an enemy or planned attacks on the US.

Intrestingly this here is almost true:

"We know that the United States of America and the al Qaeda terrorist network share a common enemy -- Saddam Hussein. We know that the USA and al Qaeda have had high-level contacts that go back a decade. Some al Qaeda leaders went to the USA. These include one very senior al Qaeda leader, who has been associated with planning for chemical and biological attacks. Companies can justify to buy another company and lose a lot of money for the strategic advantage. They cannot justify to donate large portions of money, even when the effect would be the same.

The other issue is control. When Oracle buys Novell they can control corporate policy but they will have no say over Ubuntu. And I do not believe they will buy canonical.

WIPO has little institutional political interests.
    2. You probably refer to ab WIPO treaty.

    > If we do not put corporations under the law, soon, laws will be issued at an international level by the corporations and enforced on us.

At WIPO corporations are more or less weak as stakeholders. The main influential stakeholders at WIPO are the Us movie industry and Cptech. Strong stakeholders are also patent attorneys associations and national patent offices. Delegates to WIPO are representatives from member states. Any organisation can accredit to WIPO and sure they do.

    > The aim of WIPO is to enforce the harshest possible IP protection, so states are required to cross-apply judgements from other members of the treaty.

No, the aim of some members of WIPO is to enforce these harshest possible protection e.g. the US. WIPO is full of IP critics, esp. Brazil. The only problem of WIPO itself is that it takes part in propaganda activities.

Wipo is currently shaked. The solution is to apply for accreditation or support organisations which are represented there. I fear forum shifting is far more dangerous. TRIPs e.g. is no WIPO contract.

    > Duh. Ubuntu is a distro built around Gnome.

This is a problem. Gnome is ugly in our eyes. But despite that it is our second choice. KDE offers a real innovative community desktop and in fact Linux on the desktop means KDE. In nations where Gnome rules Linux made no inroads on the desktop.

Unfortunately RedHat made the decision in favour of Gnome which was a huge mistake. Then they gave up their Desktop strategy. SuSE was a succesful KDE distribution and strong on the desktop in Europe. Mandrake chose KDE. Now we see Ximian "Novell" guys perverting SuSe into a Gnome desktop while we as users never wanted anything but KDE.

    > Oh boo-fucking-hoo. Cry me a river. Maybe because Gnome *IS* the default standard for Ubuntu, and KDE is an offshoot?

KDE based environments get under pressure from Gnome embracement strategies which intend to move us away from KDE which is the desktop of our choice. I am in favour of letting the users decide.

I can accept Kubuntu but this is only an embracement strategy. I predict Gnome will be no success on the Desktop because I as a user do not want it. And I cannot stand the Gnome imperialism.

US citizens prefer to leave Us patent reform to Ms lobbyists and the pharmaceutical industry. And then we also see some usual suspects EFF action and numerous eloquent commentators -- not the right approach to get impact and solve the damn problems.

The funny part of it is that you will hardly get a company to donate 1 Million to these civil society organisations of software developers which enables them to solve the mess (sure they would be able to with less lobbying money). But they will pay 56 million$ for settlements with the EVIL GUY (tm) which funds the US patent enforcement industry. And they will pay millions to unsound clueless lobbyists for "more and better protection" of "intellectual property".
